I am very new to leather working. I am starting off with making bronc halters, earrings, hat patches and similar western style accessories. I have goals to make western horse tack in the future when I have more experience. My question is what is the best sewing machine for these types of items that is simple enough for a newbie to use? I have tried reading through the forums but there’s so much information it’s overwhelming. Would it be better to hand sew them for now? I apologize if these questions have already been answered on here this is my first post and still learning how to use this site. Thanks in advance. Also I am located in the United States.

I've been doing some leather tack repairs and wanted some feedback on how others may go about certain repairs. I have a English girth that needs the elastic replaced. The leather pieces holding the buckles to the elastic are in decent condition. Do others replace the leather piece when replacing the elastic? or do you try to reuse the leather if in good condition with hand stitching? I can do hand stitching and I have a Techsew 4800 I can use also. And what about on the other end? hand sew in same holes with needles & awl? or machine sew. I am very wary of using a machine to sew on leather with previous holes.

Hey y’all!! I’m looking to start a horse tack painting business, and I can’t find much information on the painting part specifically for tack. I don’t want to make my own tack, I just want to buy it wholesale and paint it. I know I need leather paint, the tack needs to already be tooled and all that, but what else do I need to know? Somebody mentioned today at my work that I couldn’t paint already made tack because it was oiled? Is that true? If it is, is there something I can do about it or somewhere I can buy already tooled tack that hasn’t been oiled? All I can find is tack blanks that haven’t been tooled and haven’t been made into the whole piece yet.I painted a tooled belt using regular acrylic paint and have worn it almost daily for a couple months, it it still looks great other than where the buckle holes are. Any help I can get would be great! Thank y’all in advance!!

I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I haven't been on here in a blue moon or two. I'm looking for a pulling style breast collar pattern with a dee ring center. It'll be send to a friend who has no experience in horse tack, but is great with all things leather. If I had my own tools and leather with me, I'd make one myself, but the downstairs neighbors don't appreciate the noise generated. Thanks everyone!

Hey all, I own a Juki 1541s that I have used for years doing wallets and purses. I am wanting to branch out into horse tack - specifically breast collars and headstalls. The largest thread I've been able to use comfortably is #138 with a 23 needle. I am wondering if this is suitable for such things as breastcollars or do I need a more heavy duty machine? As long as my machine is well oiled I'm able to sew through 2 layers of saddle skirting but it is at the upper limits of it's ability it seems. Ideally I would like to continue with my Juki maybe make some modifications if possible but do not want to make tack that wont hold up! I have searched for an answer but haven't found a clear answer on this specific machine. Thanks for your input!

Hi everyone. ....I posted some of my rattle snake hides that I was tanning, and a few people wanted to see what I would make with them. I finally got a chance to work on a breastcollar demo and got it finished. I wanted to do something different than a normal "flat" colored stain. So I got creative with two different types of my stains, and came up with this. It's completely made by hand, and hand stitched also. I'll post the pictures of the headstall and wither strap when I get them made and finished.

I've got an up-and-coming business venture that I'm at the point where I am looking for a manufacturer/supplier. I am looking for someone who is looking to grow as my business does. I am starting on a small scale and ramping up as the brand grows. What I need is someone who has experience in making English bridles and is willing to work with me on what I want. I'd prefer someone in the US. Please inquire with me if you might be interested in learning more.

Taking a break and thought I'd post some of my new items I've made lately. Hope everyone is having a Great Mother's Day! I'm spending mine working as usual. Hahaha This is my newest idea...The belt is versatile, and all Hand Stitched I have my concealed weapons permit, and I like to have my gun with me at all times. But, I hate a bulky holster on my hip. I take mine to the barn, and especially out on trails in case of snakes or just for protection...But, putting it in my jeans gets it sweaty in Florida heat, and it could bounce out while I'm working a horse. If you aren't carrying your gun you can pop off the removable snap strap, and wear it like a regular belt for a night out on the town too! Dog Collar This is a close up of the Rattlesnake Hide Inlay....I even tanned him out myself. lol

Sent my 9 yr old little girl out to fill horse water troughs this afternoon. About 10 minutes later I heard two gun shots in my backyard this afternoon, and ran for the door...found my dad and little girl at the water spicket with a gun...She said she turned on the water, and seen a rattler within 3" of her foot! Snake was between her and getting back to the house so she took off to my dad's behind my house for help, and he shot it...Now it's gonna make a pretty knife sheath, or if I can get some bigger ones it will go into a headstall/breastcollar set to sell. It went from a 16" hide to a 21 1/2" hide when stretched and penned down.

Hi Everyone Been busy lately, and taking a break for a few minutes. Thought I'd drop by and show a few new items I've made recently. Everything is completely made by hand, and since I don't have a sewing machine, it is all hand stitched. My fashion model was being a Brat yesterday, but finally let me get a few new pictures. lol This is my little Rodeo mare, Jewel wearing her new Black Caiman Hide Set.... My father is a custom knife maker, and here's a few new sheaths I just finished for him. The inlays are Beaver Tails that I tanned myself. Here's some of my new Saddle Pad Corners....

I'm new and wanted to say Hello to everyone. I found this forum while I was google searching for supplies and few different times, and decided to become a member. Seems like a great place to read advice. I am a barrel racer, team roper, and trainer....I started my own custom leather business in November. My dad is a custom knife maker, and I started out making his knife sheaths for him in October of last year. Since then it's turned into a custom horse tack business. I would love any advice anyone would like to offer. I am completely self taught, and love to learn. I started out with about 4 different tools, and a razor knife. Now, I no longer have a dinning room. lol...I've turned my dinning room in my house into a leather shop. All of the sets I've made so far with inlays are all from real hides, and some of the hides I tan myself(deer, gator, beaver, etc.) Don't mean t make this too long, and bore anyone. Just wanted to say hello. Here's a few of the sets I am making and advertising so far. I hope this isn't breaking the rules...if it is I'll remove it. This is a dog collar I recently finished for my Cheeko...the little runt gets an attitude if I take it off him now. LOL

Hello! New here... I've only made a few horse "bronc halters" and I'm already addicted. I'm looking to try a full tack set, breast collar and bridle for my own horse. Someone had suggested using 5-6oz tooling leather for this? I'm planning on putting the blue acid wash from Springfield on it as well. Does anyone have any other recommendations for the kind of leather? As well as how many feet to purchase?

I finally finished the breast collar for my horse that matches the bridle I made for her last fall. A few glitches, but for the most part I am happy with it. It is lined in a soft red leather. Critiques are certainly welcome. I'm still learning and have a long way to go. Thanks
