Got a question about stamps

Recommended Posts

I took a break from leather work for several years and during that time I cut my thumb severing a nerve and as a result the thumb I use to grip my stamps is numb. That creates  something of a problem as they are small and the knurling is fairly slick after they are plated. I am having difficulty keeping the stamp from rotating slightly out of position without me being aware of it because of the lack of feeling.  I tried one of the foam pencil grips on one but they are to large to stay in place. Does anyone know if there a source for something that will fit? I haven't been able to run anything down on the internet.

A simple solution would be to cut and tape the grip so it fits. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Two things to try;

1. electric shrink wrap. a few layers of that

2. either on its own or over the shrink wrap; self-adhesive fabric band-aids/plasters

I use both on some of my tools, not just leather work ones

Hockey tape might be just what you are looking for . Just wrap until you like the size .

How about grinding the round handle into two flat parallel sides. You could feel the flat side with you finger opposite you numb thumb. -Joe

Two ideas, one similar to the hockey tape suggestion is road bike handle bar tape.

The other is to get some polymeric clay and make it custom to exactly how you will hold the tool. I don't have the numbness issue and have thought about making the clay handles myself. It is pretty easy to use and quite forgiving until you bake it to cure.

I have already tried the shrink wrap and it helps---a little. I would prefer something  little more tactile and durable than bandaids.

With the post about polymeric clay appearing while I was typing this post I will give it look-see. It is something I wasn't aware of.

Thanks for all the replies.

this; a lady in Scotland covers crochet needles with polymer clay and forms it into a generic hand-hold shape. She sells them to ladies of a certain age group, who really like them

"Plasti Dip" might work for you.  It's a rubberized product to coat tool handles. You could build a few layers and see what works.

1 in. wide Velcro works for me. Cut the length to fit. I use the loop side to wrap the the handle. It has adhesive backing.  Dispose of the hook side.

Sound like a good idea and I will try it. I believe my wife has some adhesive backed velcro in her sewing supplies. My supply of shrink wrap tubing ran out and I ordered  a variety of sizes to build up the diameter of a couple of stamps to where a foam lead pencil grip will fit and will try that also.
