ChuckBurrows Report post Posted October 15, 2009 The first one is a bear jawbone knife with an 8 1/8" handforged blade. These were used by the various Bear Societies of several Northern Plains tribes. This one is patterned after those circa 1850's and has a Plains Cree/Red River Metis style sheath with all the bells (literally!) and whistles...... The second one is a late 1840's-early 1850's Southern Plains style skinner/scalper with a 6 1/2" hand forged blade. The sheath has a pound beaded brain tan cover over a rawhide liner with twisted fringe, tin cones, and buffalo hair with feather fluff dangles - it was inspired by three original sheaths and a couple of original SW trade skinner/scalpers. David Report post Posted October 15, 2009 Chuck, Wonderful work. Amazing as always. Have you ever considered doing a companion video to your holsters and sheaths on how to do beading? It is such great work, I have the books you suggest but I think they would be most helpful to someone who is already familiar with native american beading techniques. If you decide to make such a video, put me on your list as wanting one!! David Theobald a big fan!
Art Report post Posted October 15, 2009 Hi Chuck, As always, you work is outstanding, the beadwork is just remarkable. Also, your photography and the arrangement are also first class. Let us know here first if you do a video on beading, or hell, a video on anything, your vids are always top notch, they never disappoint. A video on traditional dyes and techniques would also be good. Art Chuck, Wonderful work. Amazing as always. Storm Report post Posted October 15, 2009 :wtf: I am speechless! Those are both museum quality pieces. Either would be a great companion to my .58 Cal Hawken. That subtle color change in the beads is sweet. That Bear Jaw takes the cake and all the frosting. Jeremiah Johnson would be proud!!!!!!

ChuckBurrows Report post Posted October 15, 2009 Thanks all - these types are my real passion so it's nice to share As for a video on beading - I've got one in the pipeline for these type sheaths and that will include some basic beadwork and quillwork. It will probably be a while though before we even get it in the can. In the meantime Crazy Crow carries some beading videos that may be of help....
