Matt S Report post Posted June 17, 2017 How close to the edge of the arm is the needle on a large cylinder arm machine like the 441, 105, 205, or 45k? If a chap needed/wanted a machine for sewing heavy (v347/M8) threads as close as possible to a large protrusion on the underside of a piece, what other options are there out there? brmax Report post Posted June 17, 2017 On a factory Cobra with the standard needle plate. The needle foot out side to edge of standard plate is almost 5/16". The shuttle cover could push this needed distance farther depending what the project is. Also this if you can use the inside presser foot. Good luck Floyd
Wizcrafts Report post Posted June 17, 2017 I have holster and stirrup raised plates for my Cowboy CB4500. They let me get very close to the left edge, with the holster plate having the least amount of material on the left side of the slot (about 1/16"). There is still metal underneath the plates on the left, but most projects can be bent out of the way enough to sew them on top. Here is the holster plate for a 441 machine. Gregg From Keystone Sewing Report post Posted June 18, 2017 This is a very common question I get when talking about any cylinder bed machine. Most sales brochures offer the cylinder diameter in the specifications or somewhere else, but not usually the distance from the edge of the cylinder to the needle. I've seen some crazy mods to open up this space, to accommodate a particular good that needed to be sewn. Why hack away at working frame and components to do it. Makes sense if you need to do it. RockyAussie Report post Posted June 18, 2017 On 18/06/2017 at 6:59 AM, jimi said: Hi Matt, on a 45k21 about 3mm. Yey jimi I think with the dog foot being on the right you would have to allow that, that distance would need to be enough for the job to feed as well. My guess would be about 8mm minimum?I think the 441 will get you a lot closer to the edge than that. Even with the dog foot in and a bit shaved of the left of the standard plate I can see 5mm is possible. It would be closer still with the holster or stirrup set up as Wiz shows above. Willbury Report post Posted June 28, 2017 Here's a measurement for an Adler 205-370, just a hair over 1/4" with a slightly modified weaver harness throat plate.
