Second serious attempt at carving

Recommended Posts

So I’m using a scalpel, but have just ordered a swivel knife, so hopefully things will improve a tad. I made this notebook, with a Valknut (Viking symbol) for a friend. Didn’t case the leather enough, but noticing that is the pay off I guess. Won’t do that again.

I would say you "done real good" with what you had to use.

Yes, the swivel knife will help you improve immensely.

Yup for what you have that's just fine. Very interesting project all round.

Serge volken preaches about a "non swivel knife" which is basically a swivel knife blade on a stick. But he says it works great and I'm inclined to believe him.

Just goes to show that you don't always need these fancy special tools to get a job done.

I think it looks pretty good!

Nothing wrong with that ,   looks aged , nice   :)

I have known people to modify an old screw driver,  sharpened  , to use  as swivel knife.  No different to modifying the ends of nails , bolts etc.  to use as stamps .

If it works and does the job.....?    Like stetson912 said, you don't  have to use all the fancy tools to do the job.

That looks real good!  Nice work :)

When you get your swivel knife, it will initially feel very weird so don't try to use it on something important, rather practice on scrap as practice makes perfect.

Looks real good to me. I like how the color turned out.

I did three coats of Fiebings saddle tan, and something went wrong on the last coat - there were patches of almost grey, when the light caught it. So I put a coat of mahogany on top to see what it would do. I lucked in, I guess!

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. Means a lot.

That looks very much very excellent.

It has a bit of a 'rustic' look to it.

Not a criticism by any means, I see some uneveness in the plain circular border; that shouts out to me - hand-made,  - not made by an impersonal machine somewhere
