JayEhl Report post Posted February 11, 2022 As @chuck123wapati mentioned, probably the easiest and quickest would be to check out the free tandy library. https://tandyleather.com/blogs/leathercraft-library In many of their (vintage) doodles, they have photos and drawings of what the outcome is and show the tool used and most have the Tandy part number used. It'll be a great starting point. Enjoy!

Sheilajeanne Report post Posted February 11, 2022 This is one of my main go-to references when carving: https://tandyleather.ca/collections/books-patterns/products/how-to-carve-leather-book It shows things step by step. It's the sort of book you want to be able to see close up, rather than looking at a PDF. And $20 is not going to break the bank. (That's Canadian dollars, too, so even cheaper in the U.S.!) JLSleather Report post Posted February 12, 2022 tech-tips is an EXCELLENT reference. the others are merely copying what is clearly shown there. like 60 years old, and yet to be improved on. Very good very clear explanation of the tools and the "where and why" of using them.

Klara Report post Posted February 12, 2022 NOT Leathercraft Tools It's excellent, I have it, but it's not primarily about carving. It's about all the tools you might need for leather work and how to sharpen them. So definitely a very useful book but not what you are asking for. Northmount Report post Posted February 12, 2022 An old book, General Leathercraft by Raymond Cherry. Copies available through https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&cm_sp=SearchF-_-home-_-Results&tn=General Leathercraft&an=raymond cherry I bought it when I started leather work in 1961. 4th printing, 1955. Very good general book. I see there are a couple 2010 or so versions that appear to be copies (scanned reprints) of the original. One of the things that wasn't covered well enough, or I didn't understand at the time, was proper casing of the leather before carving. I soaked it, it was mushy, and looked absolutely awful when finished.
