New pistol, new holster
Thadrick replied to Thadrick's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Maybe thats what my eye is catching? Too big. Ill look at it more after I get off work. Might look better with a couple smaller conchos with the tassels. The tassels would get in the way of drawing the pistol though? Might just be stuck with rivets? Thanks for the fresh eye. -
For the New Owner of this marvelous collection... I have great interest in one particular machine that is numbered and illustrated in this thread. If you have interest in selling individual items, please send me a message and I will respond promptly. Happy to drive to collect! thanks, My Old Hyde....

Finally a good purchase...I think!

Forgot to mention...payed 800 € for the lot! -
Hey. @NancyLou, would you upload this to Youtube and give us a link? I'm at 60 megs and counting. Most won't DL it and I'd guess BossLady might not want to buy all that bandwidth if they did... @Johanna EDIT: I gave up at 200 megs. I'm inclined to remove it unless Johanna wants to leave it up. See Post 4 for Youtube version. Thanks NancyLou!

Hello all, I answered an add for a leather garment factory that was closing activity. They had leathers, threads and sewing machines for sale at close-out prices. I knew, from the photos on the ad, that the machines were PFAFF 145s, and I was hopping to find an H3 or H4 in serviceable condition, for not too much money, as all others that I found so far. I ended up buying more that I intended, but it seemed too good to let it slip away. Here's what I ended up with: 11 full hides (blacks and whites, one dark brown), plus 6 half hides (blacks and whites), plus 10 smaller full hides (lamb skins, maybe?) - all chrome tanned, for garment, mainly black jackets 3 large card board boxes full of thread spools (T20, T30 and T40 - most are T20, which is similar to 138, I think) 3 PFAFF 145s: 2 very early ones (5-spoked flywheel, old numbering style on the brass plate) and an H3 BLN, in full working order. One of the early ones is also fully working. The third 145 was VERY stiff (I thought it was jammed), but it released slightly after being warmed and profusely oiled. Still stiff, but rotated enough to show that everything was synced properly, and there were no particular stiff spots. I assumed it was just dirt, very old oil, and being stopped for a few years like that. All 3 machines are well used, but not badly worn, as far as I can tell. It seems they were subjected to 2 problems: 1 - Often oiled, but with bad oil - the kind that leaves a solid, wax-like residue when dried, and 2 - Use of lint-producing thread for a long time. There was lint everywhere! That, and pieces of thread stuck in various parts of the mechanism, combined with the dried up oil, were the reason for the stickiness. After several hours cleaning/removing dirt, lint and pieces of thread/oiling/dismantling and cleaning parts, it is *almost* normal now. Almost, because there is still an initial stiffness, after being stationary for a few minutes, that disappears after the first 2 rotations. After that, it is practically normal, and as loose as the other identical machine: a good hand pull on the flywheel will make it spin about a full turn or so after being released. My guess is that there is still a piece of thread stuck somewhere that I haven't found... All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase! I'll try to sell one of the 145s, but, even if I don't, I'm still happy. I got an H3, lots of leather, and more thread than I can use! I already used the H3 to do some small things, and it behaved beautifully. I'm toying with the idea of repainting it...we'll see. I think I did good. Let me know what you think. DF

What color do you heat them to before quenching?

Does anyone know of someone in North Florida who can repair a problem. The shaft is not hooked up to the lower clutch. See videos. Pieces are stuck on the pulley. Thank you for any help. IMG_9279.mov

New pistol, new holster
dikman replied to Thadrick's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Since you mention it () personally I think it would be better without them, maybe just a rivet instead, they look a bit big to me. -
Most saw blades can be heat-treated and re-hardened/tempered, the el-cheapo handsaws are usually just carbon steel. Nothing wrong with being creative with what's around, I do it all the time when making blades. A gas torch should be all you need to do that with thinner blades.

Hey Bob, putting tubes on the door won't work, they would have to be vertical and it would be a pain trying to fish out pieces that fall to the bottom. BUT it is wasted space so I'm contemplating how I could use it.

Help finding bobbin carriage for Necchi 840-100 (~Pfaff 335~)
solowiej replied to solowiej's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Just to leave this info here: I needed a bobbin case for my 840-100. Many claimed the same style and measurements, but the one that finally fit just right is called: Cutex Bobbin Case #173058 for Singer 206W, 306W, 319 Sewing Machines So #173058 is the winning number for smaller 335 machines (not the 335G with larger bobbin) It's also worth noting that the larger 335G bobbin hook set does install nicely to the 335 machines with no other parts changing. If you need to shop for the right bobbin case, it may make sense to replace the whole set and take the upgrade. There are plenty of inexpensive hook sets for both models. The higher end original Italian-made ones appear to be these: Large Bobbin for 335G model and clones: CERLIANI 130.00.335 Standard Bobbin for 335 model and clones: CERLIANI 130.03.017 -

I like how you used the stamps in an unconventional way. It really turned out quite nice.

Thanks Stetson912. I will heed your advice. Yes, the leather is a thin 6/7. The "blown out" holes were done with my old Tandy irons. The tines are not tapered, so it is not possible to make smaller holes. That's why I got new irons. Next purchase will be 7/8 or 8/9 leather. I think .8mm thread would be a good move as well.

I'm a firm believer of the saw blade option. If you're careful to not heat the cutting edge when you shape it, some saw blades have enough temper to hold a good edge without heat treating.

What is the correct bobbin size for Pfaff 335?

Necchi 840 - Custom Large pulley 3d printed
solowiej replied to marinicarlo's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
This pulley looks super nice! And I love the low-speed video. Did you model the pulley and print it yourself? Have a model you can share? I'd like to print one for mine. - Sean -
I've gotten orders online for knife sheaths and I don't have the knifes. There are a couple ways I go about it. One: I offer to make a general fit sheath. I'll get basic measurements of the knife then make a sheath that will fit the knife and there will probably be play in the sheath. You could use the sheath for different knives. Its like buying something off the rack in Large, Medium, or Small. Two: You can get the measurements from the knife manufacturer, it's usually right on their webpage. I print a copy of the picture of the knife in the measurements they provide, then I make a wooden knife like Dwight said. And the second way raises the price of the sheath.

New pistol, new holster
Thadrick replied to Thadrick's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks guys, I'm curious if ya'll think the conchos should have been tucked a little closer to the bullet loops? -
@Lena Carlton More information and a picture of the head Some dimensions of the base would be helpful.
