I've been spending quite a bit of time reading old, out of copyright, articles and books on leather and design. In one particular book, the author writes about design and proportion. Something caught my eye ... my right brained eye. I didn't equate the curves of Sheridan carving with this before until I saw the simplified drawings on page 48, figure 64. See the book here: http://books.google....der&pg=GBS.PA48 Mathematicians amongst us probably recognize the term "The Golden Ratio." Some of you may even recall the formulas and logarithms involved. I personally would rather forget those math classes. But they say that "education" is what remains after you f…

I'm making this for a good friend. He's got a tattoo on his leg, his only tat. It's kind of what they call bio-mech design but this was really before they named the design (or so i think). Anyway i've always liked it and thought it would look cool in leather. So i'm making a notebook for him. I have just a little more tooling to do. The design on the right side, which will be the cover is what's on his leg. The back piece is my design to match. I"m really just thinking of antiquing this but, his tat has a little color. If i color the background/inside the circle parts red and then antiq over it, will it still have some shade of red ?? Also without adding a hint of w…

Hello everyone, First let me start by buttering y'all up. I have browsed the forum looking for an answer to my question and found none - but I have seen some some nice work! So it was time well spent. Alright, my question; Does anyone know of vector cliparts of stamping tool impressions that can be used to make stamping designs on the computer? I am not a leather worker but I do make leather bags, that is to say that I design them and have them made. I work with four toolers who do really nice work but they are always asking me to come up with designs for the stamping patterns. I have taken a few impressions and made them into vector art and been able to come up w…

Hello all leatherworkers, I was recently asked by a fellow member id I had a pattern for a backpack I made. So after putting it together for him I thought I should also share with the community. It's not a full size pattern, it is drawn on 1/4 inch grid paper so it will have to scaled up. I also added my construction process/instructions with the pattern. I hope it makes since. Let me know what you think. Here is a picture of the backpack I made. Earlier this week I tried to do a quick carving project. I have never been very good at drawing patterns, so what I usually do it try and find parts of other patterns that fit in the space I need to fill. When I finished carving this, I was fairly happy with how it looked. But, the more I looked at it, the more it looks like I just tried to fill in space (which is what I did) So I am wondering if any of you out there that actually CAN draw patterns could give me some pointers. What I see here is 3 seperate elements and a set of intitials. I would like it to be one continous pattern without breaks in between. My first idea to try and fix this pattern was to try and join t…

Okay I am about to drive myself crazy not being able to cut a straight line and then match up two pieces of a notebook cover. Does anyone have any suggestions about making pieces of a pattern the same... I don't know if I am just letting the pattern slip or something to keep having this problem..
