All About Leather
Latigo & Harness Leathers are treated with waxes and oils to resist water and limit stretching. Garment leather is not just from cows, it includes deerskin, pigskin, goatskin, sheepskin, suede/splits, and other lightweight leathers. Upholstery leather is heavier weight and may require a commercial machine. Rawhide is not tanned, and has excellent properties for forming. It is not the leather your shoelaces are made from. Vegetable tanned leather is the only type of leather that will absorb water enough to stamp or carve.

Made a leather money clip wallet (first time), although i have made other bifold wallets and my pockets are 1 mm to short as the cards are sitting just high. Any ideas how to extend the edges of the moneyclip just a little. (image is similar to what I made although the exterior pocket is facing the other direction.

I purchased a piece of black oil tanned leather online and ended up making a tote bag as a gift. once the item was finished, i conditioned it with Obenaufs. for some reason the black dye is rubbing off the bag. What can i do? Can i apply resolene on oil tanned leather and if so, can i still apply it even though i already applied obenaufs conditioner? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Its a beautiful bag but i dont want to gift it if the dye is going to come off on their personal items etc. items i have on hand are Neats foot oil, mink oil, sno seal, leather balm with atom wax and neutral resolene, Thanks!

I've come across a few bags from COACH that are marked as being "Glove tanned cowhide". The are very soft and flexible as well as having no gloss/sheen.. I'm also interested in sourcing some if anyone knows of a place that carries it.

Ran across madewithreishi.com tonight, just curious if anyone here has seen the stuff in person. I’m extremely skeptical that it’s actually as similar to leather as they claim but would love to get my hands on some to see what it’s like.

I'm a little red/green color blind, don't have a calibrated monitor, can't get to a B&M location to see for myself and don't want to make a mistake buying a side of Tandy "Amerind" saddle skirting. To me this stuff looks like it might be red, which I really don't want. Can somebody tell me what color it is? Thanks, Arturo

I know there is a lot of discussion around top grain vs full grain , etc. But I was curious about what you guys have encountered with suede leather and if there is any real way to judge it's quality besides feel and look. I imagine there is also bonded suede but I'm not sure how to identify it. Mainly I am researching leather jackets for myself but also have always been curious about suede and learning more about it.

I’d bought some angelus turquoise and was super excited to dye a purse. It went on super unevenly- It was either the sponge I was using or the hide because when I applied it to a different hide with a dauber it did fine.... but I spilled half the bottle so no longer had enough for the purse. So I put it on some panels I’d cut for a notebook for a friend- of course some of the dye got on that super unevenly because of the mess I’d apparently not completely cleaned up. It was a rough afternoon y’all. Anyhow. I shrugged said what the hell it’s ruined anyway let’s see what I can make happen. Tried to even it out with eco flow turquoise which is a surprisingly good match. Adde…

In anyone's experience have you eve found a green jell like substance usually between leather and conchas or if conchas screwed to the saddle in the hole or large clumps in the whole and under the leather conchas. I have encountered it on several saddles some worse tan others. I have tried cleaning with vinegar, anti mold solution, brass brushes. It seems to always come back. I'm restoring a saddle right now that has had it repeat 3 times in 5 years. This time was the worst.Any help or direction would be of great help Thanks Mike

Hey folks, relatively new to leather and looking for some advice before I invest in my next hide. I have so far been working with natural vegtan and dyeing it with acrylic dye, but I'm interested in purchasing a drum-dyed vegtan hide but am curious as to how the additional tallows and waxes from the dyeing process will affect the vegtan's properties. I'd like to experiment with using my airbrush to stencil designs onto black vegtan with acrylic dye. Will a black dyed vegtan absorb the dye the same way that natural vegtan would? Is there a specific variety of dyed vegtan that would suit me better than others (ex. harness vs bridle)? Thank you!

Not trying to call anyone or any company out, just looking for experienced opinions. Does this look right to those that have used it before? I have been working with leather on and off for a few decades. Mostly utilitarian pieces, harness and the like only recently trying to expand and taking up tooling and the like. I recently decided to try to do some bags including a good size piece for myself in Bison and purchased hide from a supplier I have never ordered leather from before, only hardware. The description does say distressed, "A distressed, bison leather in medium brown", but I think this is closer to half the hide can only be used for smaller pieces rathe…
