All About Leather
Latigo & Harness Leathers are treated with waxes and oils to resist water and limit stretching. Garment leather is not just from cows, it includes deerskin, pigskin, goatskin, sheepskin, suede/splits, and other lightweight leathers. Upholstery leather is heavier weight and may require a commercial machine. Rawhide is not tanned, and has excellent properties for forming. It is not the leather your shoelaces are made from. Vegetable tanned leather is the only type of leather that will absorb water enough to stamp or carve.

Hi everyone, Has anyone tried CerMark or TherMark on leather with laser engraving? How does it go? Or any similar masking that we can use with laser engraving? I am looking for similar masking but not sure if it will go well on leather. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I bought a deer hide. When I was at tannery I was impressed and I had few ideas what to do with that. Now, I'm struggling and I have no project in my mind. What do you from deer hide? I'm thinking about the bullet hole in the hide. It is creepy to use it as some detail in a project, isn't it?

Hello I am looking at a discounted (second) leather side. Because these are seconds, any weight is possible to buy for the same price. I am looking at a 2-5 oz to be used for wallet interiors and things. Since it carries from 2-5oz, my thought is to pay the 15.00 and have it all a uniform 2 oz. My question is: does this sound like a good idea and what could the left over split bottom side be used for? Another thought is I can get a thicker side possibly 6-7 oz and have the same 2 oz split to use for the interiors and will have a thicker bottom split. If I did this, what could use the thicker bottom split for? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am …

So I just moved and while setting up my new little work area I came across some patterns I bought YEARS ago still neatly folded up. So one of them was for "freetrapper mocs" and I thought ... cool .. when I get 5 minutes I am going to make myself a pair. So I am reading the material list and it says to use "paul Bunyon leather" and I am thing What? LOL So what is tandy referring to when it calls out paul bunyan leather.

Hey Guys! I've been messing with leather for more than 30 years now, but it's all been veg tanned saddle skirting. Now I have a former student who wants me to make her Mom a special bridle for her horse, and the idea I came up with requires some tooling. My question, to those of you who routinely use bridle leather is, can it be tooled or should I make it out of saddle strapping? Thanks for the input! Mike

Coming to the end of my daughters Motoko3 from Dieselpunk.Ro. I know pull up leather is supposed to mark easily but I keep wondering if I should try to protect it. I guess that would take away from what it's supposed to do. I guess I'll leave it and watch it wear. At least that way I'll know for next time. What have you guys done with pull up? It's antique pull up.

I bought some harness leather that was supposed to be Hermann oak, however it's not branded on the back like the tooling leather I've had in the past. Working with it, it seems to be very nice harness leather, but I'd like to know all the same. I've had issues like this with the seller in the past, mostly due to inadequate communication.

I have a small work shop and I am trying to find a way to store my leather sides and smaller pieces. The small ones, I think, will be in short PVC tubes under a 4'x4' table. I have a wall that I will have room to make a cabinet around 6' wide 12" deep. My question is, would it be ok to drape the larger wider hides on horizontal bars and hang down without damage? Will they stretch too much? Will that bar leave a permanent mark? I was thinking of using black iron threaded pipe or wooden dowels either swinging out like on a swing arm or just hangers and pull them down as needed. I like the swing arm idea to be able to get to the ones in the back easier. Any…

Hi, I have some boots that have this pattern to them, seems to be woven. Is there a general method to doing this and it's just time consuming or is it typically bought "pre-woven"? Here is an example with other shoes: I really like the pattern personally. Thanks

I was searching for snake skin on etsy and I found this, stated as laser cut cowhide. Seems pretty interesting, Anyone know how it's made? I am tempted to try it. Is this a common thing? I thought most were done as stamps
