All About Leather
Latigo & Harness Leathers are treated with waxes and oils to resist water and limit stretching. Garment leather is not just from cows, it includes deerskin, pigskin, goatskin, sheepskin, suede/splits, and other lightweight leathers. Upholstery leather is heavier weight and may require a commercial machine. Rawhide is not tanned, and has excellent properties for forming. It is not the leather your shoelaces are made from. Vegetable tanned leather is the only type of leather that will absorb water enough to stamp or carve.

So I have recently began making wallets. My job provides loads of scrap leather in various grades , types and colors and so I figured I could begin using this scrap leather to make wallets as gifts. Most of the leather is chrome tanned or softer leather so I have no problems but recently I have come across a large amount of stiff veg tanned leather used for making belts that I would like to use for wallets but I notice that as soon as I bend the leather its leaving creases and wrinkles behind that I would love to avoid. Is there a method for softening veg tanned leather to prevent these wrinkles or is this grade of leather just inappropriate for anything that needs to be…

First time using this forum. I have some questions concerning the color variations of natural veg tan. Is there a gradient scale as to the quality of the leather with regards to it's color? Or a rule of thumb even, personal opinion...? For instance, I saw some pieces of veg tan yesterday most where's the average pinkish color and a few of them were very light like a matte eggshell. It didn't look very good but obviously I don't know good or bad. Any help is appreciated. Hope you all are having a good one.

Hey all, I'm trying to get some more information about latigo leather, such as use cases, history of the leather process (if anyone knows), and any general trivia that people might know. Thanks so much for your help!

I ordered this from Weaver this week. Just rolled it out to cut. This is their pre-dyed holster leather. Advertised to just tool, put together and oil, An interesting look . Not what I intended for $255 for the side. Is this normal? Will oil cover it up? Yes I am about to email Weaver and I can return it on my shipping dime. I just wondered if I am being overly concerned. Whatcha think?

I have been buying Tandy double shoulders when on sale, 9-10 oz for my amateurish holster attempts. I want to try somebody else’s product. Many other suppliers offer single shoulders or sides. I like bigger pieces for less waste of several small projects. What is the upside/ downside of shoulders vs. sides? Will thickness be consistent on sides? Thanks.

Someone gave me a present of a few dozen 1 1/2" latigo straps thinking that I could use them for making belts. They have these strange linear marks on them. They mostly run parallel but at different intervals, along the length of the strap. Here, at this end, they are tight but further left they get more sparse. Are they wrinkles?

Hello. Below is a photo of a back of leather that arrived at my lodgings yesterday. Is the photo of the neck? I'm trying to identify the neck as I want to start at that end of the roll saving the better leather for later work. Thanks. Scott
