I meant to say 'run all eight laces through it.'

Just end it with a 4 strand knot (often called a foundation knot) and run all four laces through it. You want to make it fancier, make a pineapple knot around it.

I've attached many round braided straps to totes using a what Grant calls a two-thong four-part applique braid (Plate 185). My straps are done with 8 thong (no core). Now realizing that you are using a different braid than I use ...I have some correcting and editing to do to my initial post. I referring to using the edge braid on Grant's page 299. I have braided around corners many times. What I do is mark the holes in a straight line to and from the corner, then I indent the corner hole a bit and braid around the corner like it isn't there. In regards to the ending of this braid ...if you are using a single lace in a forward three holes, back two ...with the tucks = when you come to the end you continue just by going forward two and back one using the same tucks.

When I do round edge braiding I do it like the top of grant's plate 120 ...and just continue like there is no corner. I don't think you can go through a hole twice with round rdge braiding ...like you can with the Spanish edge lacing. Sometimes I'll indent that corner hole to make it a bit rounded. ...Dave

Hi Heather... While I have done lots of braiding - I haven't used much rawhide at all - I also don't build tack. What I do know is that you can start braiding with an 8 strand flat braid and then continue it into two 4 strand round braids. That may be another way of doing it rather than flattening a round braid. ...Dave

I'd say it is the long way of making an eight strand braid. There are different ways to braid eight strands. Probably obviously, you should of used either a smaller core, wider strands, or eight strands for the braid. ...Dave

I call that handbag one of my 'double flap' bags. I've built them in several sizes and on different types of bags. This one has no gusset and is pleated on the bottom of it. I get near $200 for it. Yes, a person could use lighter weight lace to build bags with. There is another topic in this 'Braiding' section that I started that has more pictures of my work in it. Here's a new bag style I recently came up. This braided leather shoulder bag is 100% leather. It has no hardware, lining, zippers, etc. - not even any thread. And, of course, it's truely hand made - no electric was used to build it.

I've used one of these lace cutters quite extensively so I'm going to add a couple of tips that I've learned about them. I only use 1/4" laces for my work. Because of that I've filed the narrower slots larger - so I can use more of a single blade for 1/4" laces. Something else that I've done, to make those slots a bit smaller again, is wrap some thread around a slot. Most often I use a Jerry's Stripper to cut laces. After doing that, I take the outside two uneven laces and run them through this lace cutter. Sometimes I take a hammer and flatten the lace point out a bit to get it through this single lace cutter. Hi Patrice... My apologies for not responding to your post earlier. To build a knot large enough to cover a large object you increase the parts and/or bights (scallops) to the knot. The knot in the picture you referred to has 12 bights and 15 parts. If you're familiar with Bruce Grant's 'Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding' book he describes how to do this on pages 134-136, Plates 50-51.

They are faster, more secure, easier to work with, and last longer. I file them to a point of my chosing and subsequently have no need for a fid. ...Dave
