  1. My sister in law asked me to make a leather cover for her compact “car console bible”. I usually dye stuff, then neatsfoot oil, then Mop and Glo. I worry that the oil will stain the Bible. Anybody tried the oil in a book cover, or just dye and seal?
  2. Chuck, I got that same old black knife. Had to find it in my knife box. Picked it up in the street when I was a teenager. Smelled like fish so I guess it fell out of somebody’s boat. The sheath was my first leather construction with a key ring strap for retention. The electrical tape was a later field patch. Carried it deer hunting for years. Not sure that sheath is worth patching, but it only lasted 45 years.
  3. Thanks. The M1 cheek piece is a neat item I have not seen.
  4. I have bought retirement gifts for people from them. Added initials, nice gift box, first class product and packaging. They have built the brand and niche and benefited from it. Kinda like John Deere and Kubota. Both great products, one a stronger brand presence. My brand plus $1.25 gets me coffee.
  5. Thanks for the ideas. Several people were concerned about the grommets scuffing the stock finish. Me too. However, the laces hold the grommets away from the wood. I used the elastic butt covers forever because I had no source for a lefty leather one. I am retired and this is a hobby, but it would be nice to al least get materials cost back. Mostly friends who I hate to charge but probably won’t pay me anyway. I get into this in shop work too. Can lose time, use up scrap on friends projects, but I really need to get my paid parts bill back.
  6. Used to be a boot place here that did some custom leather, but closed now. One saddle and boot guy in my neighborhood, at his farm. Not much places ever here, less left. I saw some Amish made phone cases this week, of all things.
  7. Yes, that is the Colonel. Most of his stuff is Buffalo now. I kinda like the look and needs less finish maybe. Their line is a lot less than 20 years ago. They used to sell knives, hats, a bunch of stuff. Not sure it’s all made onsite.
  8. There is a kinda high end online leather place near me. Visited their showroom last month. Had plain valet trays for $60. I think that was their cheapest item. Not a line at the checkout however. Some of the online prices are really crazy.
  9. Every one will pretty much have to be a one off custom anyway. Cartridge size and number, rifle type, pistol or straight grip, lined or not, personalized or not, grommets or holes, border stamped or not. Just trying to get a place to start. I saw some priced on websites $83 and $95 and that is just crazy.
  10. Thanks. I did not line that one because it’s for me. Gonna donate some to a silent charity auction to get some custom orders perhaps. Don’t really need the grommets for function but used them to dress it up. Is a pound sterling like $1.40 now?
  11. What would you get for one of these in your area? Need to sell something. Thanks.
  12. This style might stay put better on a straight stock.
  13. Looks a little long. Stamp it, punch it, put your loops, grommets, dye it, wet mold last if needed. For the straight grip stock you may need a strap around the back to keep it from slipping forward.
  14. Nice. You can also add a sling attached in the buttplate strap if you don’t have sling swivels.
  15. Here is another no stitch firearm project. You could you use rivets instead of the snap but the snap lets you put it on without taking off your belt.
  16. Their are slots cut with a bag punch and laced through. No stitches. I used rivets at ends but not needed. See Dwight’s method below.
  17. Welcome. You might need one of these buttstock cuffs. No stitching.
  18. I sew 2 layers of 10-11 oz veg tanned with 138 thread.
  19. When the lockdowns started I bought enough plain rice and enough dried beans to fill a 5 gallon bucket each. Used up most of the beans, that rice won’t get soft if you boil it all day.
  20. Mine is set up for 138 thread. There is a guy on here named Uwe who has one running 277 thread.
  21. Looks about like my 225 and it stitches right on. Where are you located?
  22. Thank you. Hbound, this is about the same machine.
  23. I had a link to the Navy Singer 111 Manual and it won’t link now. Anybody got a current one?
  24. Here is manual for 225 and 226. https://s3.amazonaws.com/a.teamworksales.com/CONSEW+PDF/CONSEW+NEW/CONSEW+225+INSTRUCTION+MANUAL.pdf
