Resolene Question
dirtclod replied to Spence's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Spence i put mine in a Tupperwear type container and use a sponge to put it on. Squeeze the sponge out first and put it on. Wipe the streaks and bubbles out. The sponges with small to no holes work the best. Iv'e been doing it that way for 20 years and never had a problem. -
Fist thing real nice work on the seat !! It would look real neat if it was done in seprate colors. Then do a light oil finish, but that would take a long time. Personally i don't care for dye because it covers up the nice work you have done. In the end it's up to you. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice !!

Hi Ginny, i think the bobbin will only fit one way. But i might be wrong about that though. Do you have thr thread pulled out long enough on the bobbin for the top thread to pick it up ? I don't think how it's threaded on top will matter on picking the bobbin thread up. But will effect how it sews if it's threaded wrong. A couple of pictures would be handy. I'm sure somebody that knows alot more than me will be by shortly to help you out. Good luck.

Shopping list for first-time holstermaker
dirtclod replied to dBA's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I would add a awl and blade, snaps and setter if you plan to use snaps, round knife, straight knife, edgers, something to burnish with, dummy guns unless your rich enough to own all of the guns for the styles you plan to make, cutting board, poster board or file folders for patterns and some more things i am sure i forgot. -
Using Other Makers and Sites Pics
dirtclod replied to bruce johnson's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Bruce have your friend send the guy a bill for a couple hundred dollars and tell him to pay up or take the picture down. One time on ebay i seen a picture that had been stole. The owner had it fixed some way where the picture said i am a thief i stole this picture from ( and the owners name ). It didn't stay up very long....LOL. -
For me it is like Christmas came early. Thank you.

You did a fine job cleaning it up !! Now the $64.00 question would you do it again ? :-) As for thread sizes i would use a 6 cord linen thread instead of 5 Cord it is a pretty durn big thread. I had a American straight needle machine several years ago. It's similar to yours and i used 6 cord on it for everthing i made. You need to get some wax strippers to go in the pot if you don't have some already, or i guess it uses them anyway. Their a rubber plug that goes in the pot to strip some of the wax off of the thread so you don't have mess on what your sewing.

I don't know for sure where it goes, but generally they up on top of the machine in front of the thread spool. Weird they don't even show it on their site.

Going to try it tomorrow hopefully. Thank you !!

Inspiration, Copying, Giving Credit?
dirtclod replied to JohnBarton's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Have i ever borrowed a style or way of doing something ? I sure have. But i tell customers or who ever that and so and so came up with that ideal or a customer asked if it could be made this way. I have no problem giving the other person credit because they came up with ideal to start with. To me it's just looking at the way another person has their shop set up. I take the ideals that i think will work for me or change them to where they will work for me. Nobody is smart enough to think of ever thing because ever body see's the world in a different way. A few times when i was stumped on to do something or how to make my ideal work i ask a person that doesn't do this kind of work how they would do it. The reason being is they don't know it can't be done the way they say. But alot of the time you can take their ideal combine it with yours and make it work. Bottom line is give credit where credit is due to the person that came up with the ideal in the first place. -
That's great news.

I stand corrected. Bruce and Celticleather are right it is for shoes and boots. I was thinking about a thing we used when i was doing carpenter work several years ago. Nobody has ever accused me of being very smart. Guess i have had to much fun the last 56 years and it has affected my brain or whats left anyway...LOL.

It's for driving a nail in a tight you can't get to with a hammer. To use it you pull the handle/ball and drop a nail in the tube. Then drive it with ball. Hit it as many times as it takes to drive the nail. It's more of carpenter's tool than a leather workers or at least i nave seen and leather workers useing one.

Very nice work ! I espically like the colors on the leaves you achived.

I have a Neva Clog that is the best stapler i have ever used. Only bad thing is i can't find staples for it. I was told they went of business. So now i use a Ace heavy duty model # 82 . It works fine and you can get staples for it.

What frustrates you most in your "shop"?
dirtclod replied to wildrose's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
For me the most frustrateing thing is the mess. Knowing i have something and not being able to find it. Not having the rest of my cabinets done for storage. I have plenty of room i built a new shop about 5 years ago just need for things to be organized. Need more outlets even though i put them every 3 foot their's still never enough. Or i guess i could spread things out some but that would be to easy..LOL. Wildrose why don't you get a stone and try your hand at sharpening your knife. From what you said it would be hard to hurt it. Plus their not hard to sharpen. It might take a few minutes if it's really dull but it's a good thing to know how to do. -
On the things that go out of state i don't charge sales tax. Things that are sold in state i do collect sales tax. Every thing i sell gets reported in my state Kentucky there is a place to show the amount of things are sold out of state. But they want to know the total of ever thing sold in state and out of state. I'm not sure how other states handle it. If i were you i would check with the state just to make sure they don't come after you in the furture.

Your saddle looks nice and the carving looks good to. Better than mine..LOL. Personally i don't care for the quilted look, but that's just me. I would dye the concho's the same color or as close as i could get them to the rest of the saddle. Keep up the good work.

people who think they know everything!
dirtclod replied to leatheroo's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
One thing is for sure i know i don't much of anything. I have been doing leather work full time for over 20 years and i learn something new ever day. In the short time i have been on Leather Worker i have learned lots of things. Learned new things and different ways of doing other things. If a person will look around and ask a few questions you can learn something new just about every day of your life. I read one a saying that said " I'm old enough now to know that i don't know ever thing "and truer words were never spoke. Leather Roo that guy needs to come out from his rock and look around. It's just like when your growing up your parnets are the dumbest people that ever lived until you get to be in your 20's if your lucky and in your 30's if your not so lucky. That you realize your parents are pretty durn smart. -
You did a real nice job on your saddle. I really like the horn cap !

In the 10 plus years i have used a buffing wheel that is the first and i hope last time anything like that happens. It was whack bang flap flap and i was like what's going on. I shut the buffer down real quick and seen the tore up wheel and started looking for the knife. It took a few minutes to find it. The good thing is was working on the other wheel or i guess i would gotten hit. That was enough excitment to last for me for a couple of years...LOL.
-
If you use a buffing wheel to polish the edge on your knives after sharping don't do what i did. In the process of sharping two round knives i laid one above the buffer. It fell and hit the wheel then went flying across the shop about 10 feet away after hitting the wall knocking things off of there and who knows what else. Luckly it missed my dog and me. As you can see in the picture the wheel is done !! Never to be used again except as a reminder of what not to do. I had just done the one that fell. One thing is for sure i will never do that again !

Wizcrafts i was told that Nev Clog went out of business. I have looked for staples for several years now and haven't found any, i have the stapler. What i wound up doing was going to a office supply place and found a stapler that works fine. I'll look when i get back in the shop and see what model it is. I don't like it as much as the Nev Clog but it works fine.
