We were talking about it being time to take another field trip to the Museum. Mark are you interested?
-
So true. I always start a project by putting the coffee pot on and having the first aid kit handy.

Welcome Dragan! Very cool work. I love seeing stuff that is new and different to my eyes.
-
Ooh FINE thanks a lot! You got the brain nugget spinning and now I am itching to try something on a helmet too. That is really really cool!
-
That looks fantastic, it looks beautiful! You can't even see any blood on those stirrup straps either! If you got your tree with Kirby early on it could have come from that ol' boy in Georgia but his last McClellan tree I think did come from Bowden.

Top hats; AGAIN!?
TTcustom replied to TTcustom's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
OH! hahahahahahaha! I got caught out by that again. A "friend" said on viewing the top..."hey you have east and west reversed!" Wha wha wha~! Got me! -
I live near a large enough City that finding a plating shop that would run my stuff was not a problem. I had to wait until they had a full load, but time was not an issue for me. I would agree with Regis that it doesn't pay to try and do it small scale, sporadic production on your own. Let someone else worry about EPA, carry the inventory and the overhead involved. The only other thing I would add is to be sure that your parts surface quality is what you want. hand finish your brass parts before you send it out. Plating is only a couple thou thick and imperfections will not get totally covered up.

Soggy waffles???? Huh! Someone has to explain that to me 'cause I am pretty thick headed. -

Thank you sir! Next time I will pay better attention to proportion. -
Nice work on both the knives and the sheath. Welcome to Leather worker!

Top hats; AGAIN!?

I forgot to say that I have the patterns cut for the next one already and it is more proportional than this first one but with a little flare built into it. Think "Unforgiven". -

Thanks CG. I am still working at it but fun projects like this give me the practice I need. -
Looks awesome Knut! I sent you some pictures of my friends Mochila pony express style saddle but I added one here. He added some things and made a portmanteau to go with it.
-
Yup, so I have heard.
-
How esp-ishly odd! I was just using them on 304 bar stock today and no issues noted. I carded them regularly to make sure they didn't load up. I got the 50 and the 30 lines per inch... Somewhere out there is an old gunsmiths stash of 60 lpi files that I will find one day.

It isn't completely finished yet but I had to show y'all a picture of my top hat taken from Tom Banwell's pattern. It is an explorer themed hat, well sort of. I got carried away with the height but the next one will be better and not so cartoonish. I added a picture of the top before I sewed it in.

Made A Sheath For My Other Round Knife
TTcustom replied to cgleather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks for the heads up, I had to come check it out. Those ol' boys from Globe sure have been good to you, really a cool old tool! -
I just got from the UPS driver my checkering files. Ooh the mind boggles at the possibilities! I can't wait to make my first monster crosshatched beveler. If anyone is interested I found them cheaper at Midway USA than Brownells.

So far my experience is that the superTandy rubber cement just scoffs at the thinner. It makes nice weak contact cement though!
-
Yeah the "new formula" for the tandy rubber cement is brutal. I doesn't let go easily, just another reason why I use the painters tape on the back of my leather. I also have been buying the elmer's rubber cement. During back to school season I can get a great deal on them. It does seem to be more like the old tandy rubber cement but I haven't used enough of it to say. I still have half a can of the "Supertandy rubber cement"

Looks like a good start! I promise to take pictures of the "pony express style" tonight. -Tim

I agree with everything Bob said, experience is a great teacher. I cover the back of my leather with blue painter's tape before I glue it down to the illustration board, or whatever you use. It comes off the leather without leaving any significant residue and I still get good glue down to reduce stretching.

I have a uhmmmm, compulsive personality and therefore I have to have all the tools possible and read endlessly about history and facts on a topic. I have to agree that I can onnly have this as a hobby. I was getting real resentful and F-this when I had all those Kilt belts to make. I have already bought a sewing machine and "The Boss" regularly puts me on notice about any further tool purchases.
