    Design Analysis

First it was not Simone that wanted a whip it was the whip cracker that i was talking about ,, he also suggested i shorten the whip by six inchs at the fall end because the last taper went for too long and there was not much energy at the tip , after making the last taper a bit shorter it improver the energy 10 fold . The fall i cut from the butt of the hide after I take the set off strings for the handle, this is for a stockwhip mate Sorry about the confusion, i meant the fall end. Cheers for now Bevan

    Design Analysis

[ Well 8th with that much info you should come up with the perfect whip my friend ,, sounds like you have done your home work !!! now comes the practical test !!! best of luck on your journey ,,, i found out on the wekend at a whip cracking show that i have been wasting my time buying red hide ,,,,not Red Roo hide!! thats the goods, but the cow species for falls because after speaking to a few whip crackers they seem to like a lighter fall and they prefer using roo ,,, Simon Martin has been using roo for falls for awhile now and so has the aussie whip cracking champ ,, and i bet that is not in the text book mate !!! I also showed him a few of my whips , the first and the last whip i have made ,, The last whip i made "a 5foot stockwhip " he said after 3 flicks ,, take it home undo it 6 inchs put a roo fall on it then you have an elite pro whip cracking whip ,,, The first whip " a 16strand 8 foot bullwhip " he had a smile on his dial while he was cracking it ,,, He love it and wanted it there and then !! Well bugga me !!! i was always that close but never knew , I always thought my whips were the beez knees So my friend there is plenty to learn even when you think you know it all ,,, as my old mate told me ,,, you never stop learning ,,and dont believe all you read untill ya try it . I now understand why he said undo 6 inchs and what a diffrence it made , it is now like a loaded gun ready to go right off I hope this helps a bit 8th Cheers from down under Bevan www.bwrwhips.com

  8. Trade cardes were around when i first come on to Leather worker net between the talented people that were doing carving and stamping , and they had a very good and frendly thing going . Aggiebraider and i have been talking of late and he has some Macates i am looking to sell with my Bosals We have arranged a little trade just like the earlier mob of leather workers , i am sure there are a lot of leather workers that would be proud to have some other leather workers "Braiders" work hanging along side there own work . I have sent some earlier pics to Aggie but i thought i would send the finnished ones here because there has not been much happening here lately ,, please excuse the pics my phone is try-n its best !!! The Bosal is a 5/8 twisted rawhide with a 12 strand whisky roo overlay, I have use two diffrent whisky hides to get a bit of offset colour then i used a brandy for the interweave I hope Aggie likes it and uses it with one of his macate Cheers from down under Bevan

Gday Spence I also have a Dean Williams strand cutter , it was a bit diffrent to use than my old RMW one , but i tell ya what ,, it is the beez neez now mate ,, and i must agree the skivver is just awesome ,,, if people want a very good tool to do the job and dont want a $ 300 bill this is the one for you !!!! I have some pics of the Dean Williams strand cutter and splitter , I will post soon but first i need the little lady to resize them , Spence I wouldnt mind having a few chats with you mate ,,,,,, i use my skivver all the time too but dont have a holster for it ,,,, but that is a bloody good idea pm me if ya want !!! 8th I will cut a hide that is . 6 dm this weekend only if the Saints loose ,, if they win i will be on the piss with the boys ", so me no cut lace ,,, but I will take notice of what lengths and widths I cut from the next hide i do , When i do a whip i dont take much notice of the lenghts of lace i get , but i will cut the hide for a Bosal and i will tell you to the cm if you want !! I buy my hide for about $90 a dm or there abouts so i would have to agree with roo4u it does pay to cut ya own ,, plus ya know what ya getting and can cut what ya want I suppose i am lucky ,,, i have never bought or wanted lace untill i made my own ,,, now i make all plus more than i want or need Dont get me wrong but i dont know what bought stuff is like !!!! But by what i have heard ya all have probs getting the good stuff !!!! I know we all cant get the good stuff if we are buy-n from the shops but i know we can all have the good stuff if we make our own !! I have 80lt drums of off cut lace that the leather stores would sell as lace, but i wouldnt , so it all depends on what ya want and what ya can afford

    Kangaroo Lace

Gday Spinner I have been reading your post with interest on how people cut or buy their lace !! I make &sell a beveller / resizer tool and i use a RMW strand cutter and splitter, First I cut a 25mm strip all the way around the hide untill i get to the center and have a piece left that is about 6 inch in dia. I then stretch this 1 inch strip by wrapping it around a hook screwed into a post ! " well i picked the arch way inside my house " then i pull the leather around the hook and pass the leather from my right hand to my left , keeping plenty of pressure as i go then after that you will notice that the leather is not all one size it will veary a bit here and there so this is were my little machine comes into it , i set the back gauge up so I can cut lace at 6mm, 1/4 inch this will give me about 50 odd feet or there abouts , I can get 2 more pieces of lace at 6mm wide from the same strip that i cut at 25mm. Now i am left with an uneven strip of leather because of the stretch so now i will adjust the resizer so i can cut some 3mm or 2.5 mm lace. With the 6inch circlesi use a tandy lace cutter and cut them as wide as i can then stretch and resize . I hope this helps Cheers Bevan ps here is my website if ya want to have a captain cook www.bwrwhips.com
  20. Gday mate I have made some curb straps from roo leather ,,a simple flat braid with a button hole then a knot on the end to wrap around and back thru the button hole Tom Hall has a very easy curb strap to make ,, no mesurements but gives ya all the info to make one for you or ya mates horse , if ya not keen on that ,,, bailing twine will always do the job but not look as nice !!!! 21. 1. What books would you add to this list as absolutely essential to any craftsman's library? 2. Are there any DVDs you'd recommend? There are some helpful videos on YouTube, but it'd be really great to have hours of pros at my disposal to watch over and over. Gday Eric Welcome to LW I mainly do braiding and i have all of Ron Edwards and Tom Hall books , well worth the money I also have some whip making dvds from an old mate called Burnie , you can contact him at www.embrandwhips.com He shows you step by step and i assure you he makes a mighty fine whip ,,, and so will you if you follow his dvds, i also have some Xxxx Xxxxxxx books that i bought for making Bosals ,,, they are ok but you will have to read between the lines tho ,,, mesurements not true and passes are up the shit but there are some good pics to look at !!!!! That is if you are looking at doing some plaitting in your spare time Eric Cheers from down under Bevan www.bwrwhips.com
  22. You produce some awesome work there mate

  23. Gday Aggie I agree with all the above I stretch all my roo for whip , bosals , leads ,or what ever !! Frst i will cut my roo for a 6 mm strand !!!about 12mm ,,, 1/2 inch or so wide then i will wet it in cool or room temp water ,, not hot , or even warm ,,i will leave it in there for about 14 and a half seconds then take it out shake it dry then stretch it between two posts or wrap it around a hook twice and work it from my left hand untill it is all in my right , keeping some presh on the leather to make it stretch "I prefer this for stretching my leather << when you get better at cutting ya own roo ya can tell where the stretchy bits are in the hide so you will cut to save wasteage When I get to a piece of roo leather about the size of a footy or a bike seat I then will cut it with a Tandy lace cutter and just stretch them with my hands ,, there is stuff all stretch when ya get to the center of a roo hide so i would cut them more to the size i wanted but still allow for some but little stretch I hope this helps ya mate , Cheers Bevan
