Splinter’s Sheridan Style Beginning
JLSleather replied to splinters's topic in Floral and Sheridan Carving
Oh, hey.... just poppin' back in to point out that when I say W/C is $10/ft, I mean BACKS (sides minus the belly). I don't use belly leather, so I don't order it. HO will sell you backs also, but that runs about $9.25 (ish) per foot. Advantage.. no belly crap Still not $12+ Hopefully folks can get an idea what they want to use (and do) without spending hundreds of $$ to find out that isn't what they wanted. Your holster is 7/8 oz, and the wallet is 3/4 oz. You'll find a range of answers about weights to use, not everybody likes it just the same. As a rule, I like 7/8 for pistol holsters, bumping up to maybe 10 oz for the BIG ones, and as low as 6/7 for small pocket holsters or mag pouches. 3/4 for wallets / checkbooks / other pocket items 5/6 or 6/7 for small to med carved handbags (usually lined with 2/3 oz chrome tanned for a total of about 7/8) about 12/13 oz for belts, which is 7/8 or 8/9 lined with 3/4 And that binder you did, depending on the size I would likely go with 6/7 or 7/8 for that as well. -

There will be a line here to bash me for it in a minute... but I gotta say in good conscience that I would get leather somewhere OTHER than SLC (though, they seem to do okay with dye and buckles). This is an issue I've 'answered' repeatedly over the years, I can feel another web site article coming on. I mean, recognizing good leather -not bashing any one supplier Fat wrinkles happen. But they shouldn't span the hide. Color should be consistent across the piece. Bellies are 'spongey'. But that should be no more than about 20% of a side. The back side should be level and free of pits, 'fuzz', and stains. SLC does NOT carry H.O. "A" grade. In fact, they've repeatedly stated that their HO comes from the tannery already marked "B", but ... well... I've seen HO "B", and ... ? Keep in mind the purpose of some suppliers. As in retail. As in marking up something someone else provided. H.O. does have a minimum order, but the "A" grade is about $8 / foot ... not $12 / foot for "B" (or what is getting called "B"). And Wickett/Craig is down for annual maintenance this month, but their tooling leather is about $10/ft, and carves very nicely. -
I think we's talkin bout the same thing here. Well, hard to be sure less'n I wasta look up elevatory, or whatever. But the "Please!" part do sound like me

'Round heah.. you couldn't BUILD for that, but you could EXTEND for that
-
Course, doing it this way will require sewing by hand in place. Might be just as nice to punch holes evenly around a circle the same size as the frame, or 1-2 inches smaller, and then string in place with rawhide or latigo lace.

Brown drum dyed Wickett/Craig leather in 7/8 oz. Firm leather, dyed but no finish, so you can use as is or dye darker. Tight grain front and back. 5 straps 1 1/2" wide straps are about 48-49" long. I'll get a pic here shortly... 4 same color, one just a bit different shade. All 5 for $65, and I'm paying shipping in U.S. Looking for more than this? Send me a message ... I'm still digging out / cleaning.. and there's probably more in there somewhere

What are the issues with trademark violations? Are these licensed images, like the license to use them comes with the machine?- 4 replies

I'd like to see leather I'm buying from ANYWHERE, and that's how I do it now. But as a rule, W/C has been quite good. Incidentally, you can get the dyed struck through, but they don't do it with ALL of it and you need to tell them you need it that way. Last I talked with them, there's no charge for it, just may throw off the schedule some. I like their english bridle, but have never tried the latigo. I do like the tooling leather, which I generally use about 8 oz. It's a bit lighter color than H.O. as a rule, and carves well.

OH, that's right.. annual shut-down this time of year. Still, check their site for their distributors.

Sweet! 50 years of faded, but still lookin' good. Honestly, Al might have had a tip or two to share with you on the figure carving, but the floral is nice and the overall looks great. Nice swivel knife work. Your sister obviously proud of it, too. -
If it changed that quickly, I would check the NEEDLE before even touching the tension adjustments. I had one of these machines (still kicking myself for letting it go) and it ran extremely well, all the time. Thread shredding could well be a "needle issue". Beyond that, I would also recommend that you get yourself 3 or 4 bobbin cases. They're cheap ($5-ish). Set one for each size thread you plan to use. I had bobbin cases for 69, 92, 138 - and one additional for those rare "other sizes". Point is, when you want to use 92 thread, then use the 92 bobbin case. You'll be amazed how much time and aggravation you'll save by NOT adjusting bobbin tensions back and forth. I always recommend checking the needle AND the thread path before monkeying with other things. Often it's something WAY simple, like the thread got looped around the tension screw when you pulled the last piece, etc ... If you don't already have a manual, you can get one http://www.consew.com/view/consew-model-206rb-5

You can get better leather for $2 LESS in Curwensville. http://wickett-craig.com/leathers/

I hadn't ordered from them until within the last year. Just a couple of HO sides, see how the service was. I ordered top of the line. The hides I got were pathetic. I'm not debating it -- not ordering anywhere that would even have that in the "A" pile. Weaver just one more crossed off the list of suppliers-- I haven't been back.

Wondered about that. Tough to tell without the gun, but I thought that curve looked familiar.

Glad to help. And I agree, sewing a few holsters by hand is no trouble. Belts can cause a guy to shop for a machine -
Oh, yeah.. lefty would do that to a guy What's the model?

Glad you got er done. But, aint it backwards?

Leather is 7/8 0z (right around 8). I sell "some", I suppose it's "alot" to some and not much to others And I do most of the sewing on a machine... though I do some hand sewing occasionally. -

Yep, jus' creatin' a little friction. Some folks don't like a lot of contour (boning) in the outside to show, but there should be some tension to it. With a 5" barrel, I mean,... probly not doing handstands with it -- a little tension likely do it. It's a pancake, so just putting in on the belt will bind on it some (slim fella is worse) -

Now THAT IS funny. Little Dude next door just showed up, wants to know if I'll turn on the Wi-Fi. When I asked 'what for' he says 'just like google n watch stuff' At age 5, he's already learned that y-tube (not a typo) is what you do when you don't really feel like doing anything. Pool and trampoline not interesting at the moment, I guess?

Drat and curses. Just over 19,000 downloads of these patterns so far... and it occurs to me that had I been thinking, I could have charged 1¢ apiece and after taxes I would still have had lunch money!
