Yep, was lookin' at this. Not gonna work on THIS project, but I do like the look of this stuff https://www.acadialeather.com/product-page/scotch-pine-crazyweather-5oz
-
Young gal just told me that on the phone, too Sad part is, I could have PAINTED a piece of HO and been DUN by now Keeping this stuff in mind, though, as well as the glue that girl was telling me about for use with oil tanned leathers.

Nice looking stuff, and that IS the marbled look I'm interested in. A bit thick, though, by the time you glue to something else it's a bit much for this knife (blade about 4 1/4"). Marking them for later, though I was there first That first link looks nice. This is basically something I'm doing for a guy who ordered something ELSE and who was so durn friendly I agreed to make him a knife sheath too. He isn't too worried about beauty, just wants his knife protected while brush stomping. Between that and the marbled handle, got me thinking "pull up" leathers. Sheaths aren't my "thing", but it's a case for a nice knife belonging to a nice guy, so ... Nice lookin' knife, so gonna give him something he can actually like

Something like this would work, if it was either veg tanned in 6-8 oz, or if it was thinner I could glue it to some veg tanned ... this is the approx color and effect I want. https://www.springfieldleather.com/Oxford-XCEL-Blue-Ink-Pre-Cut-12x-24

Looking for something with teh marbled look -- like you'd see in horween or a pullup leather -- but in a veg tan that will wet form. ?? Checked about 20 places with no luck. Only need enough to do a knife sheath for a fella, but I'd take a bit more if I could find it. Not interested in a side, but might be willing to buy a bend or double shoulder if it was nice. Something in gray - blue - slate type shades? In about a 6, 7 or 8 oz (though I could live with a 5)

OH SHOOT.. you said "set up" I thought you were including tables Too bad they aint some commercially available rig you could weight teh bottom of a pole. Like one them thingies for patio umbrellas. But, how did you decide on the type of sign to make before deciding on how to display it?
-
Might be quicker 'n' easier, drill a hole in teh table near a corner , the size of the pvc pipe. Put the sign on top of the pipe, and shove the bottom of teh pipe in the hole like a patio unbrella Lets go over that again. 2" OR SO PVC pipe, about 6' long. Notch the end to fit teh sign (hacksaw, drill, whatever. Hole saw on teh table at 2" or 2 1/8". When ya git ta the show, put the sign on the "pole, shove the "pole" in da hole, carry on ...

Leather BS (aka nashville hustle)
JLSleather replied to JLSleather's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Then Google translate is pretty close! I type in "it costs more because it takes time" All them boys (and girls) wanna charge by the hour .... I'm gonna pass on that I seen a video this morning (well, fast forward thru one actually) that was over an hour covering roughly what I covered in a 3-page PDF (3 pages including pics). Seem like a darn nice fella, too -- and at least he wasn't charging money for info that is freely available in other places. We've all seen that one, too -- guy come around HERE asking a bunch of questions, get free answers, then CHARGE the next guy for that same info. But that's another grift in itself ... -

I LOVE those threaded needles.. far better than most others available. I cut a taper on the lace before inserting.. could be you tapered too thin? Plus ... that ↓

Ya might run a little tight on that sizing, but hey -- I'm in awe of your determination and avid research I always tell people do NOT go by the "pants size".. I have size 34 jeans I can't get on any more, and I also have "34" jeans that would FALL OFF if not for my belt. Yet both say "34" ...
-
I'm with ya --- since he asked about people who "post and respond in these forums". I've seen some FANTASTIC work around here. Beyond that, I don't want to buy your book, Im' not paying to see you "do a show" or make a video. I figger when a guy thinks his opinion is so wonderful I should PAY him to hear it, he can KEEP it But I did see some wedding albums on here by a guy named Thompson a while back that were STUNNING. (or was it Thompsen with an "en"?).

Well, I know I said roughly this before, but don't know just where / when. So here's the same info in a pdf, maybe easier to find attachments? beltjunk.pdf

Should be fine. Tools sold in the 80's were pretty crisp.

OH . WAIT>..... Somebody will come along shortly to argue these plain facts. Perhaps because they dont "see" it and thus don't agree, and 1 or 2 gonna SWEAR that isn't right simply because it was me that said it But any nay-sayers, do a simple test. Take a glass, or anything else you have laying around. Measure around the glass. Cut two pieces of leather that length. Now, wrap the first piece around the glass. Now, wrap the second piece around that .... Yeah, thought so.

Nope, can't find it. In simplest terms, you need to add about 3/8" (actually closer to 10mm) for every 1/16" of leather thickness. So an 8 oz belt (1/8" thick) would need to be 3/4-7/8" LONGER on the grain side. For your girl, waist size 30.5". 6 0z belt = 31 1/8" 8 oz belt = 31 1/4" 12 oz belt = 31 3/4" THEN, some clarity on buckles used. consider this ... Belts need to be measured from "where they hook" - on the buckle and on the leather. Changing the buckle can change the size of the belt, as shown. These straps are all the SAME - only the buckle is different. Two things about that: replacing a belt with one with a same or similar buckle, you can just measure off the old leather (hook to hole). you "lose" some at the fold, so to be accurate you're not actually measuring the (whole) buckle.. but rather the part of teh buckle that extends beyond the leather (since teh buckle actually goes BEHIND the fold). The "size" belt you are making doesn't matter.. it's not a "percentage" .. just an allowance for leather thickness. NOW, keep in mind that NONE of this accounts for measuring error, "cheaters", or outright lies about the size. Got another minute? I can tell you about the problems arising from people (mostly girls) giving you the "over the clothes" size over silk or knit slacks, who are now wearing that same belt with heavy denim. Or other people (mostly boys) who KNOW FOR A FACT they are a 34, because their Walmart bonded leather belt SAYS SO right on it (and they are NOT interested in hearing that cheap belt actually measured 35 1/2 when new, and has now stretched to 36 1/2). And, just to have in mind .. so-called "vanity" pricing. "BOX" stores often sell clothing (especially belts) marked wrong -- this is deliberate. WHY would I go buy a belt from Jeff for $65 and listen to him tell me I'm a 38, when I could go to Walmart and get a belt for $21 and they'll tell me I'm a 34?@! Hey, don't blame the messenger ..I'm just telling you how it goes. Raise your hand if you feel that's way more info than you asked for ....
-
Thickness of the leather matters - lots o folk seem to trip over that one. Much like pipe. Go to the store, tell em you need 3" drain pipe. But pipe can measure 3", and have a wall thickness from 3/32" to over 1/4" thick. Clearly, they aren't going to hold the same amount. The increased thickness makes the inside smaller. I covered the difference somewhere around here already.. math wise. See if I can find that..

How do I properly use embossing plates?
JLSleather replied to PleasureFace's topic in How Do I Do That?
The people who make them (and use them) recommend this as well. Clearly shown right on the site where you buy those "plates" -
