cool italian leather book spines
nomi replied to SojournerLeather's topic in Books, Journals and Photo Albums
I saw a tutorial on that once on the net, I'll see if I can find it again. Basically all they were doing, was pinching the leather with something that looked like a flat pliers. Cased leather might have enough stretch to it to see a similar edge. Another site I saw they used a small piece of twine under the leather to give it a "bulge". - Noel -
I had a chance to stop by Fox Valley Leather today, and they said they are no longer doing in house tanning. It was too problematic with OSHA issues. So they are sending out all the hides they receive to another tannery, and the hides are taking aprox 6 months before return. - Noel

They do show up occasionally. Do a search on Leather Postcard on ebay and you can normally find some for sale. Not very expensive either. - Noel

There was quite a discussion on these guys on a graphics forum I'm a member of. The problem with them, is they are not paying for the rights to rent those dvds to others. They are making copies of dvds they purchase, and then "renting" those out. You'll notice in their "how it works" section they even mention they are going to send you a dvd-r. The problem with this model, is that the person who authored the videos aren't receiving any form of royalty on the products being rented. Videos rented from your local rental store are especially packaged and marketed for rental. In other words, they cost a lot more to buy, because of the renting aspect. All depends on how you feel on the issue. Personally I have a hard time supporting a website that tries to go around the authors of the videos. - Noel

Sometimes I think people are missing the chance to make some real money in leather The type of person (normally an executive) that is willing to buy such an item, doesn't care about the price. Seriously. They're looking for the prestige. Market to that factor, and you can make some serious cash - Noel

Most major craft stores carry them in the states, not sure in Canada. However if you google Cuttlebug you'll find a ton of online stores that carry the item that could probably ship to Canada. - Noel

External hard drives are the best way to go. I have two of them on this computer Make sure it is a USB 2.0 drive (by default it probably will be) and buy as much hard drive space as you can afford. The prices have dropped fast on these drives, you'll be able to buy quite a bit for your money. I have two Seagate external drives, never had a single problem with either of them. Works fantastic. - Noel

According to our local Tandy, they don't carry pro petal tools any longer. Just a heads up, might want to check with your local one. - Noel

I wonder if movie props of guns would work. I know they're fairly close to the right size and such. - Noel

Ebay has some listed: http://search.ebay.com/saddle-catalog_W0QQ...saddleQ20catalo Another place to keep a lookout at, would be abebooks.com - Noel

Personally I would leave it the color it is, but I'm a lover of the more natural leather styles - Noel

Someone posted this on a mail list, a guy on ebay is selling gun molds for making holsters. Has quite a few up for bid at the moment. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ...0QQsassZkzturbo - Noel

I bought a butcherblock from Sears that works very well for myself. This is the one, got it on sale a little while back http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?...UseBVCookie=Yes Has a small cutout around the sides that keeps my tools from rolling off the edge - Noel

Disney tends to be fairly strict on their characters. What you would be doing, would probably be considered fan art. And as such, you would more than likely be ok. If you were selling merchandise with Disney characters, that would be an obvious no no. To me, the answer is going to fall into the "should" category. I don't think you would have an issue with Disney. But I'm not a trademark lawyer - Noel

According to this website: http://www.aussiewhipmaker.com/Red_Hide.htm Red Hide is: Red Hide is the name given to a type of cowhide that has gone through a specific tanning process. As the name suggests the final product is deep red colored leather. The quality of any cowhide depends on the original hide. Scars can create weaknesses in the leather. Young cattle have more stretch in the hide, which is not desirable for whips. All leather will stretch but if the strands at the end of a whip stretch too much then they are more susceptible to break. Australia’s whips are truly the best in the world. This is not necessarily due to the fact that we have some of the best whip makers in the world, but also because we have some of the best leather for whips in the world. So it seems to be a cow leather, but I don't know how it compares. - Noel

Just watch out for the guy in Canada that wants 12.00 US for shipping one magazine - Noel
