I'm in on this. Great job Dave! Will you show assembly steps as well? I hope so. I'm a newbie too, and this may be an avenue I could go in leatherworking. God Bless, Ray

I've been using a stylus, but I'll give that a try, Thanks! God Bless, Ray

If you don't mind me asking, what do you use to get such a clean transfer of your artwork? My stuff looks like chickens scratched it on. Nice tooling too. God Bless, Ray

Can you divulge an approximate ETA on a prototype, and rather Green Man Leather Inc will be using Beta field testers? God Bless, Ray

I'd prefer machine sewing if I knew there was one available I could use both safely and effectively. But anything that'd make hand sewing easier first and quicker second, I'm all for. What do you have in mind? God Bless, Ray

Thanks for the help brother. That would work great. I'll keep an eye out. Thanks! God Bless, Ray

Anybody Here Using Tool "boxes" For Their Hand Tools?
LilRay replied to LilRay's topic in Leather Tools
Well, Other than the fact that you've got more tools, I'm right with ya. I keep liquids (dyes, glues etc) in one drawer of a night stand. The other has medicine bottles with snaps, and rarely used tools like screwdrivers etc. Then I have a box my stitching tools came in filled with that stuff, I have a 4x4 timber that I have holes bored for the 9 tools that came with the Deluxe leathercraft kit. I don't have any stamps yet except those. Another box has boning bones, skivers, Round Knife, v gouge, etc. Maul stays on top of nightstand. Then I have stuff like 4 pieces of plexi that I adhere wallet backs to, and one that I took te first belt I tried, and made a strop out of. I'm not the most organized person, but I seem to spend as much time looking through everything, as I do tooling. Because as always I'll inadvertantly put one thing in the wrong box. I'd hate to see what a mess I would have with lots of stamps or dies. God Bless, Ray -
Anybody Here Using Tool "boxes" For Their Hand Tools?

I'll check HF. I thought about a "Top Chest" with 5-6 drawers that sits on a mechanics "Roll Away". I just didn't wanna be the only guy who carried his tools that way. Hey look at that dummy, rolling that big box around. God Bless, Ray -
Thanks Sam! I'll go create the saved search now. God Bless, Ray

I've seen plenty of pros with big shops line their walls or benchtops with tools like edgers, awls, groovers etc. But I am just beginning and don't have that sort of space. I've gotten to the point though through a lot of blessing that I have "enough" tools that the night stand I was using is overfilling. That and I want to be able to separate tools for different steps. I don't want to have to move a maul to find a groover, that sort of thing. I don't have many stamps yet, but I do have a few wooden handled tools. I've got some hand carved bones for boning that I don't want broken. They're special to me. I fear damaging or losing tools. What do y'all suggest? God Bless, Ray

I've looked but cannot find one. Think King's crown. Thanks for any help. God Bless, Ray

Thanks for the idea. I walk on forearm crutches, and I may get some of this stuff to make me some "cuff covers". I can't count the amount of times I've skinned the inner bend of my elbow. And um, I'm sorry about your renovation issues.... God Bless, Ray

I've played instruments every day now for over 20 years, but I'm new to leathercraft and don't yet know the ins and outs of the different types yet. Thanks for the detailed response. God Bless, Ray

Well, tooling leather it is then! Guess I'll just have to find a super soft lining leather. Got any suggestions? God Bless, Ray

Just curious. I've yet to buy my first sides, and I plan to make guitar straps. To tool/carve/stamp must I buy tooling sides? God Bless, Ray

Definately! But I'll practice tooling for a while longer before I ruin a straps worth of leather. As soon as I can do well enough to try a strap, I'll post,. I promise. God Bless, Ray

Can you move to Georgia so I can pick this up? Good luck selling. God Bless, Ray

Thanks for the links RC! Those help immensely. I'm a bassist, so most of my friends wil want 3.5 to 4 inch wide straps. I'm sure I'll make a few for the "Skinny Sixers" too. God Bless, Ray

I like that too Luke. God Bless, Ray

Sewing Machine For Someone With Limited Use Of Legs/feet
LilRay replied to LilRay's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks Wiz! Like I say, I've never tried and before I invested any money I'd need to know I could operate a machine not only accurately but safely as well. Big investment to possibly have an ineffective "shop toy". I'll look into finding a machine to try, and someone to teach me how to properly use and maintain one. Kind of a booger to do when you live rurally, but not impossible. God Bless, Ray -
Sewing Machine For Someone With Limited Use Of Legs/feet
LilRay replied to LilRay's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Steve has already messaged me on a couple other sewing questions I had asked prior. He seems like a very nice guy. I'll have to see if he'll be at any shows in the southeast anytime soon. Thanks Art! God Bless, Ray -
Sewing Machine For Someone With Limited Use Of Legs/feet
LilRay replied to LilRay's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Bruce, I have never tried operating a machine. I guess the first step would be to find out what's broken before trying to fix things, but I'm building dream lists to keep myself moving forward. Truth is I should probably keep my goals for now more toward proper tooling technique, but what can I say, this is all exciting to me. As far as the one handed thing, I do a majority of things one handed. I wish you could've watched me learn to swing the maul you sent with my secondary (right) hand. I'm sure most would've chuckled. I sure did. Lots of laughing and swearing. I've at least got it down to a hit more often than not now. I don't have as much precise control over my knee as I do my foot(feet). I've always been able to develop a "system" to get things happening, and I'm sure something could be figured out. Thanks Y'all! God Bless, Ray
