  1. OK, I'm gathering my "dream" tool list and my ultimate leather tooling goal is to make instrument straps.(Guitar/Bass etc). To start with, without getting power machinery I'll need a good strap cutter. Trouble is I'm a southpaw. So, I see what's called "plow" and "draw" gauges. I don't really know the differences between them, except for the basic premise that one is pulled and the other is pushed. So Which is easier to use and more consistant for a southpaw? How about decent brands? Any help is appreciated. God Bless, Ray
  2. I just got a Deluxe Kit back in February. I'm thinking the basketweave stamp may have been bent when new. How would I know other than by eye? God Bless, Ray

  12. I'm a longtime musician, just learning leathercraft. For guitar/bass straps What weight leather is best to use???? And do you commonly back with a second layer of material like suede or leave natural? Anybody ever add neoprene or other cushioning agent? Lotsa questions but I'm a total newbie. God Bless, Ray
  13. Steve, You're right. I was meaning the controller. Sorry, but I know nothing about sewing machines. Thanks fellas! I don't think I'll invest anything into it as it seems for the same money for a controller, I could get a running version on Ebay. Back to learning to hand stitch! :D God Bless, Ray
  14. Found a Singer 648 sewing machine. Don't even know that it works, (doesn't have cable). I can get cable for $14 but before I spend any money, does anybody have any idea if this thing might sew leather for wallets? Can't find any specs so I thought I'd ask here. God Bless, Ray
  15. Tim, For some reason your post didn't show last night. I'll definately look into the DVD, as I'm more visually adept and would probably learn quicker. Thanks for the tip! Thanks Jack! (What part of Texas are you in? I grew up in Dallas.) Can anybody point me to a diamond awl? The only one I see at Springfield is S shaped. Is that the best one???? God Bless, Ray

  19. What all tools do I need to hand stitch? I'm looking at Springfield leather, and they have diamond chisels. Are those for thread or lace? Also I'm guessing a groover. What else? God Bless, Ray
  20. Gonna chime in with another related question. Are 4 prong diamond chisels as effective as awls? What's the most common spacing? God Bless, Ray
