I'm planning on making some of my own tools, petal lifters, and blade for my swivel knife. I want to know if you can use tool steel or what grade of stainless would I need. Thank You. Rob

I have been looking for some new Sheridan patterns. I have a pack of Chan Greer patterns, but I'm looking for something new. I don't draw well, or fast. so I'm in the market for some patterns. I've seen some from China, and Japan. They are a little more than I want to spend. so I thought I'd pick your brains. I'll bet some one knows where I might look for others. Thanks Rob

Thread Question
r lenna replied to triage1998's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
for belts I use Upholstry Thread, you are going to have wax on it to protect the thread. If you use Linen you are going to want to have a lot of wax on it. Linen isn't a very strong material, if you use enough wax what the linen will do is bond with the leather so if a thread breaks it will hold fast. I like to use upholstry thread waxed and doubled and I have yet to see it break in any thing I've done. Rob -
Hi There you can find it at Springfield Leather you can get by the yard for $2.30 or by the roll for $20 you can find it here. http://springfieldleather.com/Books%2C-Patterns-%26-Craftaids/product/8086/Tracing-Film%2C10-yards/ most things are cheaper there than Tandy. Rob

Hazards Of Boiling Beeswax For Medieval Leather Bottles

I use a cup warmer and a short glass pan, that way I don't have to listen to the wife. Rob -
You can get it at http://springfieldleather.com/ for $20 a roll or $2.30 a yard. If you get one of their Memberships even less than that. Rob

I-Pad Cover

Great work as always. I like your pattern, is it one of yours? I love it... I like the things you have on your site you have a lot of skill from what I've seen. I don't think I would put any of my tooling at that size. I've just started carving leather so your not going to be seeing any of my stuff in the "show off" area for some time. If I were to post any thing I've done, my thumb nail pic would be thumb nail size or a little smaller...Rob -
I think it's very nice. the edge braiding looks good from what I could see. Did you braid the cord and do the knots on there also. I like it. Keep up the good work. Rob

Anyone ever ordered from Leather Unlimited?
r lenna replied to Hilly's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Lately I've been getting my leather from American Leather Direct. The leather is great and the prices are pretty nice also. I just got a couple of first quality veg tanned 6,7 oz. double shoulders for around 4.50 a sq ft. delivery for less than $10. there's no min. order. They get their orders out pretty quickly. I've only ordered veggie tanned stuff there. Give them a try. Rob "not Bob" www.aleatherd.com or give Bob a call at 800-624-7642 -
I've had the same problems, I use the same die and I use Purell "the hand cleaner" when the die is still wet the alcohol will even out the die. It will darken in the areas that you use it some. I think its the water that's in it. I would think you could take just alcohol and do the same thing. Thats what I do.. Rob

I use the green myself to start with and then something soft to finish off with. I use a Barry King knife and I can cut for 30 mins or more before it starts to drag. but I strop for maybe five mins or more when I do strop it. I Rob

Sweat Droped On My Dye, What To Do?
r lenna replied to Lizard's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You can even it out with a little Purell. I have used it to even out dye on many things. You don't want to use it much on the stamped areas as it has some water in it. Rob -
I got some from here http://aleatherd.com/[ just another Idea.there prices are a little lower than many of the others. You don't have to get 5 hide min. Rob

I have the older one and I ground down the sides a bit and it helped with it gouging out a lot of the sides. But I don't know what it would do for yours.. Rob

Hello my names Rob and I get my tools from Barry King. I have his swivel knife and its smooth working and the blade holds a sharp edge for a long time. I also have been getting my stamping tools from there. I've looked around and I don't think you can get any better tools any where else. There are places you can get more expensive tools, but I don't think they are made any better. Check him out. Thats my 2 cents worth. Rob

I think you did a fantastic job. You know it's not what others have to say about it, you know in your heart if you gave it your best effort. -

I've looked around for some info about leaf liners, but I've not found much. l've found many uses for the tool, but I would love to see the way others use it. I have enjoyed all the instruction that I've got from here. Thanks in advance. Rob
