If you are looking for some good inexpensive leather for starting out I would try out Springfield at http://springfieldleather.com/17/Leathers/ They have a wide selection with better prices than Tandy.
I like Herman Oak. It carves easier than Wicket and Craig. Wicket and Craig does tool well. I like Panhandle leather for Its
prices on that brand. http://panhandleleather.com/LEATHER_c90.htm Rob
On the question of knives, you could ask 20 people and get that many differant answers. how to finish edges I would check this out.Rob

I like to use Fiebings Oil dye. You want to wait until the piece is dry. I then give it a coat of Neatsfoot oil then dye the part. The oil helps to even the dye. Rob
I use a wood dish rack. I rest the parts upright. there are lots of slots to rest the work in. If you have a finish side you can rest the part on it's back. Rob
You did a good job on staining the background. I like the stitching it's nice and even. your first attempts look better than mine. Before you do many more projects you should get some scraps and practice and pratice and pratice, I wish I had.
It looks like you could have cut a little deeper on the holster. you can cut two thirds of the way deep and still have enough strength. I like my border stamped flush against the cut for the border. I use tape on the back of the leather so the leather doesn’t deform when tooled, and I leave it on"the tape" to keep the inside clean looking when I stain. Keep it up. Rob
I live in the heart of limestone country. I have a 3 in piece that I've used for a year and it works great. I think if the stone is smooth and thick enough it would work. I wouldn't spend a lot for testing. It needs to be a solid base or you will have problems with cracking any way. Rob
that looks a lot like a bag I saw on the grain side up. you might want to check it out. Rob

I like it. I looks like a pro job. I've been doing some some smaller wallets my self lately. what I see is perfect. I think with a small one like that I would either line the inside, or dye it. with a very small wallet a small thing like that detracts from the overall look of it. I love what you've done with it. Keep it up. Rob
You know I hate to rain on your parade but I have a 6 inch thick, 3 X 4 feet wide block of limestone for free. It is not polished, but its very smooth. It's not the most durable stuff around, but it beats nothing. It's very nice, it looks great. Rob
Hello from Indiana. The stuff you have posted looks pretty good. Maybe a little small, but good. If you're intrested in leather this is the place to be. I hope to be seeing more from you. Rob
If this is going to be left on the bike. I would want to use polyester size 346 or larger because it's sun and water resistant. On the leather it will depend on how stiff you will want your bag to be. I would use a 7-8 ounce in a latigo, or a bridal leather that will help it to stand up to the weather. That kind of leather has wax and oil already in it. Oil tanned leather would work also. How much you will need is another thing, I don't use metric if I can help it, buy I find that most places I know of you will have to buy a side. it all depends on what you like to work with. Rob
