    thicker leather will be much more easy to get the corners mitered and sewn you did not say what thickness you are working with.

    Glat that you talked to B G L. i thought about making my self one of those but i decided i could do the same with useing a SMOOTH FACE COBLERS HAMMER.

    the photo was very bad.......but I have a tool "very similar" to that and it is reffered to as a seam roller. i got it at a store that sold wall paper supplies.

    What i would do is lay the crown pattern out and cut out of the center of the pattern from left to right the amount you want to lower the crown and then tape it back together, the top and where the crown attaches to the brim remains the same.

    GO TO hOBBY LOBBY.....MICHAELS OR YOUR FAVORITE CRAFT STORE and buy a wooden box. cut the leather out that will match all sides -top and bottom glue the leather pcs on and then sew all together.

    DO AS FERG SAYS..... also i beleive that you need to do some SHARPING of the edge and it would help if you used the END GRAIN of a hardwood blok.
