I use a strap cutter. Works great. I have also been known to take a piece of angle aluminum and clamp it on the line I need to cut. then us my roller cutter and make sure it stays against the edge. Just dont clamp too tight and mar the leather. FYI I corked the back of the angle to keep it from moving.

Recently Completed Pancake Holsters
mlapaglia replied to bland's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I normally use a 5/8" slot with. FYI on a T-nut you will need to trim the prongs on the nut so they don't stick out of the leather. -
Recently Completed Pancake Holsters

Nice work. It all looks good. Personally Im not fond of exposed rivets on the back. You might consider using a T-nut between the two layers. Your slot width is a little large for my tastes. Other than that it all looks good to me. Keep it up. -
It depends on how bad the flesh side is. You can sand it down if it's not too bad. Skiving might make it uneven. If it's not bad then gum trag could work but it might not last if it sees a lot of friction from the inside contents. Michael

Possibly all of the above but the worst is the chrome tanned leather. You can not normally tool that. You need veg tanned leather for tooling.

Cant tell you what happened to you. Its working for me.

+1 on all the good comments above. It's a great machine for holsters, belts, Purses, cases, etc. Not so good for thin leather. It's not rated for less than 4 oz leather. Never had the problem of dropped stitches or bottom thread pulling to the top that wasnt a result of me not pulling and pushing the handle all the way. FYI there is an update kit to help the stops on the top and bottom of the arm travel.

This is a different thing. The original company produced logo is being re-purposed but retains its original logo format. This is acceptable under international Trademark laws as long as the logo is not being used to imply a product is by the trademark owner. You cant put Bud beer in a Coors bottle and sell it as Bud. Most companies are forgiving to the small business concerns. Its when it gets to be big time that they have to act. Also if the logo violation is brought to their attention, no matter how small, they have to act in order to preserve the Trademark License. Trademarks are one of the biggest headaches in any business. One thing to remember, some people from a company that say a logo use is ok may not have the authority to make that claim.

Unfortunately it does not unless the item is sold with written permission of the trademark holder that permission to sell items made with the stamp is granted. The seller does not have the legal right to grant any permission. In the strict letter of the law no use is allowed without the direct permission of the trademark holder. Almost all Trademark holders allow a non commercial, i.e. not for sale, use of their trademark but reserve the right to revoke that permission at any time. Just because you purchase a trademarked logo making item from a store does not, by itself, grant you permission to sell items made with that trademark. FWIW I spent that last 10 years working with a division of a company, Toward the end my sole job was Trademark control and infringement. I am not a lawyer but all my communications were reviewed by a lawyer. I learned far more than I ever wanted to about trademark law. thanks

Owning the tool does not grant you a right to use the trademark. It also does not stop most people. Legally you need permission from the trademark holder to use a trademark on an item you sell. That being said, chances are you will not get a letter from their legal department unless you get really well known. You decide.

Resolene And Water
mlapaglia replied to chevvy64's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
Perhaps your light coats are too light. I use resolene 50/50. 2 coats and nothing else. I just tested an old piece and it did bead for a second then soaked in. Thats resistant to me. Try a 70/30 mix to see if a little more resolene helps or put it on a little heavier. Use a test piece of leather. Too much will bubble and crack. -
Harness needles 0,1,2 and 4 depending on the size of the thread and the awl. Personally I use a 0 or a 1.

Iwb Pattern Anyone?
mlapaglia replied to Gregory's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Try this. I have made it for a glock 19, M&P Shield and Sig P938. All scaled of course. I use 6/7 oz leather and do it rough side out. Let me know if you have any questions. SHIELD IWB1 pattern.pdf SHIELD IWB1 pattern.pdf -
Backpack Project: A Few Questions...
mlapaglia replied to ninovoa's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
Call Springfield leather and tell them what you need. They will cut you a piece the size you need. Yes you can dye or color veg tanned leather. Below is a holster I did with Pink acrylic paint and an air brush. FYI the edges are not done yet in these photos. -
Welcome back. you were missed.

Get yourself some Slide-Glide Its designed to stay put on gun slides and I have used it on other things as well. Id suggest the medium or normal version. The heavymay drag down the pulley. All you need is the .5 oz tube. Its worth a try. It's good stuff. I would avoid oil at all costs for the reasons you mentioned. Michael

Looks good. One question. Wouldn't grease be better than sewing machine oil on that pulley/bolt configuration?

My Etsy Website, Critique And Feedback Needed
mlapaglia replied to danboy295's topic in Marketing and Advertising
Loooks good but I have 2 suggestion. This sentence "Only ships to United States from Jersey City, New Jersey." I saw it on the last item on the page, reads poorly. it implies you have more than one point you do business from but you only ship from Jersey. Maybe try something like. "Located in Jersey City, New Jersey.: "Sorry but at this time we only ship to the United States" Make it 2 different bullet points. Just being picky -
New Tippman Boss Bottom Stitches..help Please!
mlapaglia replied to Toolster's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Different chisel needles have different points. Check out the PDF attached to this post. It really explains all the needle types for leather. With great pictures of what the top side stitch looks like. Worth having. I use 794-LR-200 for 277 thread because I like the look both top and bottom of the leather. needle patterns with examples S LL LR ETC V2.pdf -

Dwight, Out of over 100 belts vinagrooned this is the only one that did this. My personal opinion is either it was a problem with the leather or I did something stupid. Give it a try. Even if its the vinegaroon then the cause was my incorrect run through the backing soda. Id say go ahead and try it. Michael -

It was a back. I cut them the same way you do. I havent seen it yet but Im leaning toward a defect in the leather. Maybe a range mark I didnt notice or something. -

I didn't mention it because i didn't think to. I did oil it with pure Neetsfoot oil. Nothing goes out the door without getting oiled up. Since there is always a 6 back or 3 in the fridge even a few customers have gotten oiled up. The only other thing I can think of is the owner of the belt lives in Seattle and wore it in NY to the to the superbowl. It might have broken in shame. (For those that don't know I live in Denver )
