  1. Quote>>>>And BTW, I had forgotten how stinkin' hard on the fingers the double loop edge is. I undercharged this customer a tad I'm thinking (at least my fingers think that way)!! Quote<<< If you think double loop is hard you wanna try the mexican round braid on a tool roll, that does take a toll on the fingers..LOL!!
  2. Thankyou very much,I love that mexican round braid but it is a real long job doing a roll with it and pretty tough on the fingers so looking for other lacing techniques i could use as well.that would look right on the piece. regards JJ.
  3. Hi, any idea where i could find some instructions on how to do the "triple loop" lacing please. regards JJ
  4. A very nice looking piece there, can you tell me what your stitching / lacing is called i would like to try it on my next tool roll. cheers JJ
  5. Go 12 inches wide by 6 inches deep, then you want 3 inches front to back, make it a U shape with a flap coming from top back 3 inches over then 4 inches down the front, SO your main piece of leather is gonna be12 inches by 22 inches, your 2 side pieces are gonna be 31/2 inches wide by 6 inches plus another 4 inches for an intenal flap so 31/2 inches by 10 inches times 2. the extra 1/2 inch on the sides gives you room to punch holes for stitching or lacing. put all thes measurements down to card or thick paper and cut out to give you a good idea of what you got before you start cutting leather. hope this is of some help to you, I normally make round tool rolls but these are not very good for carving/tooling the U shape is better for that,
  6. Hey thanks Chris, your praise is indeed much appreciated ,though i got a long way to go before i git anywhere near your amazing skills my friend, I gotta thank you for getting me back into the leather stuff after 12 years off it,I saw your stuff on the Aero forum n thought i got to have a go at that again, heres some of my "old" stuff, Not real fancy i know but i sold quite a few of those things for quick draw/re-enactment etc back then. laters JJ.
  7. Actually thats TWO, LMAO!!!! I am using round holes aprox 4mm but using an awl to enlarge when going through double if you know what i mean, my leather is actualy 2.5 to 3 mm split,I,m using this cos i got it cheap but 3mm veg tan would be good,if not better. sorry i do not know how to convert it to ounces. there is a chart on here somewhere. Also you will use aprox 1 ft of lace for every inch of braid. Here is a very informative site with instructions for this braid and many others plus other interesting things, check it out. http://kingsmerecraf...om/page100.html HTH, laters JJ.
  8. Its the mexican braid, I got the instructions of here,http://dcknivesandleather.blademakers.com/ top left of page Click on knife info then click on lacing tutorial and follow instructions, i found 5 holes to inch best for tight braid on tool rolls using 5mm lace with the brass tandy lacing needle http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120792085003#ht_500wt_1055 Hope this Helps JJ DC hope you do not mind me posting your site for reference.

  17. Hi,I recently made a tool roll for a buddy and I used a 12" by 20" piece for the main body and for the ends i made a 6" circle but put 6" flaps on it for the "weather"flaps to fold into the top of the tool roll, I put the whole thing together using mexican braid round both ends and round the main flap of the roll,Then just added fastener straps and 2 fork straps to the back. Sorry i do not have any pics of seperate parts but you may be able to see what i mean by these photp,s, Hope this helps, JJ

  20. Hi,cheers for your reply, I like the idea of 1 yard at a time but when i splice 2 ends together in the braid i find that piece becomes thicker than the other braid, I,m real new at this and all advice would be real helpful,I am a long way from some of the great work i see on this site. Thanks again for your help, JJ.
  21. Hi, I recently made a m/cycle tool roll for a buddy with mexican braid on both ends n round the edges, I made my own lace for this job from pieces of scrap leather with a lace cutter,Although i got the job done i had many problems with the back of the lace all balling up and the lace snapping on a regular basis {PITA} Any how i have had requests from our bike club for 3 more of these So my question is what is the best lace to use on this kind of job. Before everyone shouts kangaroo I am working on tight budgets and cannot afford the stuff, I also reside in the UK and find it difficult to source. So basically which of these would one and all recommend for the job i,m doing :- http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1415wt_1039 http://www.ebay.co.u...9#ht_3246wt_906 http://www.ebay.co.u...9#ht_500wt_1055 http://www.ebay.co.u...8#ht_1385wt_906 Thanks in advance For any and all advice given, JJ
