  1. Go back to Bob Kovar, He is the needle man. He helped you before he will do it again.
  2. I make my threading wire from the smallest guitar string. Kink it tight then open up the kink and snip it off so you have a small hook. I put my thread in a coffey can set it on the table behind the machine run the tread thru a screw eye on the ceiling then down to the first thread guide.
  3. I just bought 331 needles 200 & 230 $3.25 each needle. Packs of 10
  4. We live in northwest Missouri. If you can get close enough to them that they will open up they have alot of things that most of us could improve our life with. Kept very simple they don't believe electricty is evil. Basicly they just don't want to be dependant on things they have no control over. Things like public utiliies, insurance companies, politics. They like transportation that is self reproducing, raise there own horses biuld your own buggies etc. We are getting at little off what this foums is about but it can be interesting.
  5. Some use diesel powered compressors, but this shop has a state of the art wind powered air compressor on a 70 foot tower the tower is tapered pipe 12" at the base 4" at the top and is the storage tank. They also have a 4000 gallon storage tank, looks like it might have been an LP tank. They also run a battery charger with solar pannels on the roof of the shop which is 120 feet long and 50 feet wide. They buy bio, nylon and Beta by the semi load, And leather 200 backs at a time. It's a first class operation. The owner and I have been friends for40 + years. I do all the sewing machine and clicker repair work and sharpen all of the cutting edges in the shop.
  6. Went up to the Amish harness shop today and set up the 2nd new CB4500 this year. Put the stand together removed the servo motor and speed reducer installed the air motor and valve and it sewed right off. Set this one up for bio so after we sewed leather we changed the needle and cranked the tension up did a great job. They replaced there Bull that they have had for 20 plus years and a big Consew. They sold the Consew but Bull is for sale It was still in use but not really up to 8hrs a day 5 days a week.
  7. I use a stainless steel tea spoon to rub out marks.
  8. Rawhide where in kanas are you. I live in nw Mo. 45 miles east of St. Joe. I have never used a #6 but I do have a good Landis #1. They use the same needles I don.t know if they use the same bobbin but they are the same style, If I can help let me know.
  9. A 45k69 does not have a presser wheel it has a foot. the bottom of the foot is angled down from right to left. the needle plate and feed dog is angled to matched. It is made to sew soles on shoes as you said. You will not be happy trying to sew anything that is flat. It will only feed the material to the right of the needle which make it almost impossible to sew straight it also wants to push the work to the left and break needles. It will leave big marks on the bottom of the leather. I have one here that a harness maker tried to use and brought it here for me to fix. I can not find parts to convert to 45k25 specs. Bob Kovar said no parts for it. Leave it where it is.
  10. $600 should get you a pretty good used machine. Call Bob Kovar in Toledo to see if he has a used machine that will do what you want.
  11. Any good suggestions? Looking for something cheap that would "just work" till I get good at sewing then I can upgrade to a much better machine.I hear this all the time and I disagree. The less experience you have the better machine you need. Untill you know your way around you will never be sure if it is you or the machine that is causeing a problem. A person who has ran machines for years can do some pretty good work with a machine that others will not get along with at all. Don't settle for a make do machine get a good one if your skill and interest turns into something big your set, if it goes the other way you will be able to get all or most of your money back if you need to sell the machine.
  12. Well I bought the Purtain High Speed at the sale. $200 I got it home and in the shop today. Gave it a quick oil up and it sewed right off. !/2 inch of harness leather is the most that will go under the foot no problem stitch length from 0 to just short of 1/2 inch. Tomorrow I start the clean up. I am going to put it on a new table and set it up like the book said with the foot lift on the left and see how I like that. I'll try to remember to take some pictures as I go. The book with it was dated 1907.
  13. Thanks Eric I knew someone on here would know. The same guy also has a 16-188 about the same deal I know it's older but it looks pretty good. What about it?
  14. I am looking for a walking foot machine that will handle 207 thread and sew 3/8-7/16 inch and under leather. I have found a 211g151 condition looks good and the price seems Ok. What do you think Whiz , Eric or anyone?
  15. I figure .8mm is very close to 554/T600 or 8 cord. 1mm= .03937x.8mm=.0314. My chart said 554 = .0326
  16. OK Bob got me up to speed about the canvas. I should have known better about the hook snaging the cloth. Wiz did say leather after all.
  17. I have a chance to buy a purtain at an sale Sat. single needle chain stitch. I sewed with it today has the orignal book could not find a model # just said Purtain high speed last pat date sept of 1897. It looks like it has 100 years of crud on it but stitched 1/2 inch harness leather like butter turning it buy hand, It's mounted on an OLD singer industrial base set up for a line shaft. What do think I should pay I really don't need it but I sure like it. I do have 300 feet of 60 inch wide canvas i have been thinking about turning it to a tent/awning. Opinions please.
  18. Billymac What post bed machine do you have? I have a singer 136-100 I might like one with a longer stitch. I use it quite a bit on canvas & nylon bags with 4 oz leather bottoms.
  19. I make harness and a groove is need to keep the thread from wearing thru. My Landis # 1 has a channler blade that mounts in the needle plate to groove the bottom, the presser foot with the over stitch points and the high thread tension set the top thread below the surface of the leather. Tugs sewn this way last decades, if the leather is cared for the threads never wear.
  20. I got one from Bob a month ago. Order an extra screw when you call . It's a tiny screw and it took me along time to find it after I dropped it.
  21. If the clutch motor bolts on with 3 bolts it should bolt right on. some clutch motors had 4 bolts then you will need to redrill holes. As far as useing the same belt there are too many combinations to tell without seeing it, but belts are less than $10 for most setups I have done.
  22. If you are a good scrounger you might build a table, put a screweye in the ceiling above the machine instead of a thread stand. you will need a bobbin winder (less than $10 new). We run a singer 331k1 with a 1.5 amp motor like Wiz said but its's on a quilting machine not much punching power.and it's pretty fast. thread is about $18 for a 1 lb cone you really need 2 , 1 for the machine 1 for the bobbin winder. Running the bobbin winder with a motor on the machine will be another problem. You may find a used clutch motor that someone else has taken off and put on a servo motor not the best choice but it will work ok and might be a lot cheaper.
  23. Buying a machine without all the stuff on the list is like buying a car without tires, wheels and a battery. You just can't use it without the complete pakage.
  24. look the motor over close some motors have a switch to reverse the rotation. If you fine one flip it the other way and try it. PS I'm to slow glad you got it fixed
