Cheers that's answered my doubts about one of these knives , one more question if you don't mind what type of knife do you use for internal corners ? i think the second knife he uses is the one for corners but if you have a better idea i'm open to ideas.

penguineer can i ask if you like your japanese utility knife ? as i have been looking at some on goodsjapan site and they make a left handed one, i don't particularly want it for skiving just cutting as the gentleman is using it in the video.
-
I just like the way he appears to have a good view of the cutting line with his hand raised up , but i have never used a round or head knife so i don't have anything to compare , at the moment i am using a Stanley Knife.

Thank you Trox for your advise

I'm thinking of investing in a knife for cutting leather and noticed on youtube a few professionals using these knives , being left handed i wondered if these are ambidextrous or would i need to buy a left handed one , i've posted a link to a guy using one or maybe two as one looks to be angled ? , i am confused with how he is using it as the chamfer seems to be on the wrong side for a right handed person .

Considering Alternative Tools For Pre-Sewing-Prep Tools
Django57 replied to samcolt45's topic in Leather Tools
This is what i'm buying for the same reasons as you . Pricking Iron , Nigel Armitage video explaining it's use . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gtonQ3YF5s -
Thanks for the link Elton Joorisity found them on the Aaron Martin site.

Wondered if anybody had a source for these buckles i believe there called Trace Carrier Buckles ?

Thank you for your reply, we have probably watched and read the same videos , i like the Nigel Armitage explanation for the saddle stitch which is what i want to achive eventually . From what i have learnt from watching his videos he seems to prefer a pricking iron from the Joseph Dixon company based in UK and a 6 or 7 stitch per inch which suits me as i only want to make small items wallets , watch straps and the like , but i have been reading that the ////// it makes can some times be a bit long and the thread you choose is important , he uses Tigre thread which is pre- waxed polyester and the size he uses is either 0.8 or 1mm i don't know what the equivalent is in USA, if you have any thought i would appreciate your input .

I like how you have made your first wallet , i too hope to make one in a similar style , i expect to have the same issues you have had . i have read your blog good explanation , can i ask what stitch per inch your wheel is ? i bought a 7 stitch per inch wheel , i am thinking i might invest in a pricking iron but that is a big subject and one i need to explore more , they can be expensive so i need to make sure i get the right one for the job , i like the minimalist look and want to show off my stitching if i think it is acceptable , any advise or thought would be appreciated .

Cheers Wishful you wouldn't think so if you could get your hands on it rough as a bears ar£e as we say in the UK but it does the job of holding the leather , got the rest of my leather working tools on Friday so good to go now .

Todays attempt found a Nigel Armitage video with a slightly different style (link here)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gtonQ3YF5s Its right at the end where he demonstrates it .

Really appreciate all your helpful advice , will take a bit of time polishing the awl tomorrow , I've been asking on another forum about buying a Pricking iron or is it an angled thonging chisel or a lacing chisel my heads spinning i want to do this //////// at 7 per inch , put me straight or should it be angled , cheers
-
Thanks Alamo for your advice , I'm using a diamond awl , are you supposed to polish them before you use them? or are they good to go from the packet . i know what you mean about a pricking iron but i didn't want to spend too much money at the start until i was sure i enjoyed it ,

Nearly all the tools i need arrived today and i am reasonably happy with everything can't fault LePrevo my parcel was shipped Monday and came today , as far as quality of the tools i would definitely say mid-range the overstitch wheel is very flimsy and wanders of line a bit , i have posted my first attempt in the stitching section of the forum if you want a laugh . I still intend to get some better quality thread but Wenzel stuff is cheap to learn on ,as with most things and as you mentioned LePrevo's ordering is a bit of a ordeal i missed of the blades for the Clicker Knife but i think i will be able to buy them here , if i have any more comments on the tools i will post them here , Cheers

Well after watching all the videos and asking lots of questions i finally received my delivery from LePrevo , so here's my first go at stitching it is supposed to be a saddle stitch but not sure , i have followed Nigel Armitage's great instructional video. I have a couple of more questions, the thread i bought is the Wenzel thread and i can't tell if it's pre-waxed , also i am a bit disappointed in the overstitch wheel seems a bit flimsy, i bought the 7 stitch to an 1" as i only plan to make small pieces it tends to stray a bit of the line but my technique is probably at fault (poor workman blaming his tools) anyway watch this space i'll be kiting out the Spanish riding school in 50 yrs I don't think .

My first leather working tool arrived today courtesy of ebay a Slicker . The pony i made from some scrap bits of wood and with the help of a post on this great forum.

Cheers Treee Reaper just needed a clarification .

Hi i am waiting for my order from LePrevo to arrive , i have quite a few tools on my order so when they arrive i will let you know but to be honest i don't have a comparison as this is my first tip toe into leather working . But as you say the prices are very good , somebody mentioned on this forum that they are mid-range and if they are that will suit me as i didn't want to spend a lot of money only to find i didn't enjoy working with leather (don't let my wife hear this she'd kill me).

Been searching the forums for threads Linen and Polyester i found this stuff recommended on another forum but i haven't a clue if it would meet the requirements for sewing leather it comes in 0.8mm and in a few colours this a UK website so i don't know if there is an equivalent in the USA. http://www.force4.co.uk/9982/Marlow-Ropes-Whipping-Twine.html
