  1. good morning. I just started leather carving and was wondering how do you highlight the carved images so that they stand out like what I've seen on some of the fellow members work. thanks again
  2. thank you very much. now to buy a beveler!
  3. just saw this. looks good to me, but unfortunately I can't really critique your work since I'm new to carving. meaning I just got my swivel knife yesterday! trying to gleam some info while trying to get a feel for the instrument. hope my attempts look halfway as good as your's.
  4. Hello all again, am I correct to assume that a beveler is used to give depth to your carving? thanks again
  5. I'm new at this also, but it looks good to me.
  6. Hello all, still new at this hobby. today received a used swivel knife that I purchased on ebay. went to try it out and it cuts. but not sure how to use it. can someone advise me on the proper use of it? another thing, how sharp should the blade be, and is it sharpenable. what's the advantage of this over a x-acto knife? couldn't I have used that to cut patterns in the leather also? how deep should I be cutting? thanks
  7. hello all, I have a piece of scrap leather that I would liketo make a knife sheath out of. however the inside is kinda mangy looking. how can I make it smooth? thanks. and by the way, Happy Mother's day to all the mothers out there. here's a pic.
  8. thanks, but will it harden when dry?
  9. cow belly? pardon my ignorance, please explain
  10. nice video thanks for posting it. I definately learned some tips.
  11. nice knife sheath. I too am new to this leathercraft thing. I found out that that the welt is a piece of leather that runs along the sharp edge of a blade and is sandwiched between the front and back layer of your knife sheath. this is to protect the threads or lacing from being cut. I've watch several videos of knife sheath making and found that some people use rivets, some don't. this is probably a personal choice.
  12. Hi all, just finished a cell phone case and due to some overmanipulation the leather seems to have soften up some. is there a way to reharden the leather so that it retains it's shape better? don't know what type of leather I'm using since I purchased it from a local hobby shop. thanks
  13. thanks for the video. I did try what was shown. but I'm thinking maybe the piece of leather I was using is too thick. it did swell up considerable.. I buy my scrap leather from a hobby shop, so I'm never really sure what type of leather is in the bags.I'll try a thinner piece and see what happens. thanks again.
  14. Hello all, I'm trying to make a cell phone case for a coworker but I'm running into a bit of a problem molding the leather. the dimensions are 2.5x3.5x1 inch. I'm having the most problem molding the corners because of excess material. I've tried cutting slits at the corners, tried removing some of the material, but it still doesn't work. the only other way that I can do this would be to make it in sections. if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the help. thanks
  15. Hello all, does anyone have advice on removing excess contact cement? I just finished? a knife sheathg and ended up getting too much on the material ( on the finish side ) and would like to know how to clean it up without messing up the surface. thanks

don't worry , I'm sure I'll be getting more laces.
  17. had bought some scrap leather from the hobby shop.when I soaked it, it swelled quite a bit and felt kinda rubbery. after I molded and dried it became very stiff, but also had this greyish area around where I was using the molding tool. can anyone give me any ideas what would cause this and also identify what type of leather it might be? thanks.

    Free Lacing

Hi all, new to leather crafting. every time I purchase scrap leather from the local hobby shop, it includes a bunch of leather lacing. I have no use for it right now since I'm still perfecting my basic skills. if anyone is interested I'd even mail it for free. otherwise I might end up throwing it in the trash. just send me your mailing info if you're interested.
