So Adobe's new policy of subscription only purchasing, I frequent a few art and design forums as well and it hasn't gone down to well at those places. There probably isn't the concentration of users here compared to there but there will be some here who rely on these programs to do their leather design work myself being one of them as well as using them for the graphic design work I do. Just in case you haven't heard this is what they plan to do all the major software in the Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamwaver etc can no longer be bought outright i.e a perpetual license it will only be available as a continuing Creative Cloud subscription of $50 a month if you purchase a year upfront or $75 for the month to month option. If you only need one software product say Photoshop it will be $20 a month with no yearly discount. They are trying to entice existing customers with cheaper prices to begin with but that will jump up after a year and who knows what they will charge once everyone is on the subscription model. I've used Photoshop since version 3 and Illustrator for about the same time and only updated every second version as the updates have been severely lacking at times yet now I will be forced into updates and have to pay for them whether I want them or not. This is my main problem I've rented/leased computer hardware/software before and had no problem with it why it was for a set time say three years and after that three years I could buy the equipment for a low price and with the software I would no longer get updates but was left with last version after the term run out which I owned. With the Adobe way you will never own anything the subscription will be for forever or until they go bust you could spend thousands of dollars over the years and still be left with nothing if you have to drop the subscription for any reason. They say if you drop the subscription you still have access to your files well yes but how are you supposed to open them if you don't have access to the programs that created them, yes some files can be opened in other developers software but not everything can be. I think I will probably use my CS6 set until I need a new operating system and then look for alternatives Quark played this game with their customers years ago and lost which bought the rise of Adobe in the design industry and I can definitely now see history repeating itself with Adobe's new cash grab move. So what does everyone else think of this new pricing move by Adobe.

Try turtlefeathers.net, I bought from them a few years ago. I think they use USPS I know it definitely wasn't UPS as they are too expensive for me.

Yep I was just showing Ray that one at knifekits in case he didn't want to try drilling into the bar himself. For myself I only need the round punch press attachment I don't use snaps or anything and it's $125 AUD plus gst and shipping, just seems kind of spendy for a small piece of metal and a base plate. I use to be able to use Tandy US in the past but since a store opened here you are restricted to that one and the prices aren't that great i.e we definitely don't get the US special prices. For my use a modified arbor will probably be fine looking at Rays OP though he probably is going to be more restricted as it sounds like he needs a few dies. Ray that KAM one on Ebay looks like the lighter duty model here is the website for them http://www.kamsnaps.com/Snap-Press-p112.html

Ray, You might want to look into this a few here have one http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?products_id=634 or if you want to have a go yourself http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/936799-Drilling-Hole-in-Ram-on-Arbor-Press I'm thinking of going this way as the Tandy press plus the round punch attachment I need is expensive in Australia even when on sale.

Thank you for the link shtoink, that's a great looking design my woodwork skills are severely lacking to be able to make one myself but I definitely think some here could. Would love to see one made especially for leather work tools. Clair

For what you are doing like Bruce I definitely recommend a crank skiver, I love mine and they are easy to use. Clair

Oxalic Acid For Cleaning And Bleaching
cem replied to Leela Valley Leather's topic in How Do I Do That?
This is what I do as well, with one more step after the leather has dried I give it another wipe down with a damp cloth of just distilled water. Clair -
Tom, there is a member here who bought the Cobra recently and they put up a review on YouTube. I believe there is also a recent purchaser of the Artisan I'm sorry I can't remember their names at the moment. If they don't pop in the next couple of days do a search for Artisan and Cobra and the threads should come up both have been within the last few months. Here's the Cobra one http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=44643 popped up at the bottom after I posted.

Wow you really like to be right don't you, if the lettering wasn't a problem why mention it in the first place,I went by this line in your original post (Sent vector image with name of font I wanted used) which means to me that the file wasn't prepared properly because if the lettering was outlined properly there is no need to say this it is built in. Some of us were trying to help when files are being prepared for external bureaus sometimes things are overlooked and there was nothing there to get in a huffy over. I've had trouble with companies in the past where an order hasn't been done properly and I've acted in a professional manner without the extra hullabaloo. As for wanting to lock the thread Johanna isn't at your beck and call and as you have been involved in more than a few threads that have been locked I think maybe you should give it a rest and in the future work out any problems you have privately because on more than one occasion you have seemed to misplaced your manners as I and few other longer serving members can attest to.
-
Ferg I'm a graphic designer as well and that is strange about the lettering if it was converted to outlines in illustrator there would of been no problem it would of loaded like any other element in the file and if it wasn't converted to outlines your daughter would of been able to convert it in a couple of seconds. I had a quote from infinity with my own lettering and didn't run into any of this it sounds like this particular sales person didn't know how to ask for a lettering ready file.

Adding Thinner To Dye
cem replied to rccolt45's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
There is no oil in it check the MSDS, the difference is Fiebings use a higher quality alcohol base in the Oil dyes. No one seems to know why they call it Oil dye. -
3D Printer Can Be Used For Leather Work
cem replied to leatherkind's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Here's some info on the available hobby 3D printers http://blog.makezine.com/volume/make-ultimate-guide-to-3d-printing/ I saw the actual print magazine at a newsagent as well and it gives a good run down on 3D printing for those new to it.- 16 replies

3D Printer Can Be Used For Leather Work
cem replied to leatherkind's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Cool, I experimented with a stainless steel 3D print from Shapeways thread is here if you want to take a look http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=10252&st=90 I've used it for a few small things and are quite happy with it, which 3D printer are you using I was thinking of getting the UP Plus in the near future as there is local supplier and they seem to get good reviews and don't take up much room. Beaverslayer from the looks of the size and going by what I've had printed in the past probably under ten dollars.- 16 replies

This is the thread that mentioned 17 3/4 inch http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=3471&hl=%2Bartisan+%2Bsplitter it was actually from 2008 so perhaps Artisan has modified it since then. That's great you got it in three days you must be in the US unfortunately though us overseas members don't have the shipping options you guys have in the US.

This is not for anyone in particular but please can you put your minimum purchase requirements on your webpages. I've just spent the last week playing email hockey with one I told them in my first email how many rolls of each colour I would require that I was a small custom leather goods maker and could I get colour charts. Sure no problem we will look into that and send out colour charts. Sales: Next email hand sewing or machine / Me: no problem hand sewing I send back. Sales: We have these colours in stock / Me: that's okay I already have those. Me: I really need this colour first, stated how many rolls / Sales: ok will check Sales: how many did you want to order with the other colours / Me: Again told them what I needed and can I see colour charts Sales: No problem have that colour as well as the other ones you need, how many do you want to order / Me: I need to see the colour charts first, can't have a lot of thread in colours that I may not use told them again what I needed. (still nothing about minimums) Sales: email colour charts / Me: Was picking colours ready to send when this came back. Sales: You will need to order a carton for each colour / Me: That is way too much for me to use Each time I said to them I will only need two rolls of each colour that last email came back with a quote that was going to cost over $8000 AUD dollars ha ha ha it would take me more than a few lifetimes to get through that much thread. This has happened on more than one occasion so please suppliers/wholesalers/manufacturers can you put your minimum requirements on you webpage so potential customers know exactly where they stand to begin with.

Same here, my small workshop now smells like an old sewing machine but when I open that storage closet woo hoo much more pleasant. Clair

I looked into one a few years ago but it had to come by sea which put me off and I didn't really have the room for it so went with the smaller Weaver. From what I can remember, don't have the email anymore with the quote (computer died) the shipping was about $500 USD (3 years ago) to the Fremantle port and I would have to pick it up from there. I also asked about the head only and they didn't seem to keen on it. Although it's listed at 20 inch it can't actually split that wide the maximum is about 17 3/4 due to way the blade sits there was a thread here that mentioned it I think from 2009 or 2010. If I was looking at a bigger splitter now I'd probably look at the 14 inch Cobra their service also seems a lot more helpful but if you definitely need something bigger I would get in touch with sieck.de (they have an English site). They don't look to have anything at the moment but have had bigger ones in the past they looked like a cross between a Landis and the Cobra can't remember the manufacturer but I know they were made in Germany. I looked into it awhile ago as one of my relatives runs a large wholesale butcher and has their own beef slaughted and I could of got all the hides I wanted but the time it takes just wouldn't of made it worthwhile. Takes at least six months and I didn't want to wait that long and it to be unusable also uses a lot of water and I don't think my local council would of liked me tanning leather in my tiny backyard. This site goes into a bit more detail than the e how http://www.braintan.com/barktan/1basics.htm Cheers, Clair

Clicker Die Makers/sources. Im Desperate.

ah ok I never had any trouble with Lucris, was a few years ago though. Probably before they got busy now I realise why you asked about clicker machines a couple of times. Cheers, Clair -
Clicker Die Makers/sources. Im Desperate.
cem replied to NewYorkerInSydney's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Yes they ship to Australia I've got some hand punches on the way now, hopefully they will get here by the end of the week. I've also used Lucris in Queensland and they were pretty helpful. Cheers, Clair -
Nige, great videos there will definitely pass them on to a couple of newbies to leather sewing I know. You do a lot better than I can with the awl changing I'm a lefty as well and get too jumbled up trying to show right handers how to sew. Just one thing though Tiger thread is actually polyester not nylon. I've been using it for a number of years as well excellent stuff though I wish Julius Koch (the manufacturer) would provide colour charts to Abbey as some have different codes even though they are the same colour. Any chance you buy in store and could give a run down of the colours they have in stock as I've been trying to get them to provide some samples or even just a pic on the shelf for awhile with no luck either. Cheers, Clair

Hi Fullmetalsam, Sorry just saw your message, I only got to use the plastic one once it worked okay but wasn't heavy enough at that size and unfortunately it didn't survive the silicone molding process the cem part came away in pieces and to top it off the mold had an air bubble in it, the cast in resin worked better but because of the air bubble I'm not able to use it. If you want to try a plastic one from Shapeways I would try something bigger, once I need something else from Shapeways I'll probably give it another go as well. Cheers, Clair

Wow that look great Roo well done. Cheers, Clair

Fair enough Cheryl, I understand that. I'm just saying though it has gone a bit too far here at times (definitely not bigoranges which is very nice by the way) but in the form of a member being most gracious in showing how to do things and others with no inspiration of their own copying exactly what was being made and to top top it off selling the items afterwards. Thankfully it hasn't happened recently but I do think if we see something we like here we should ask the original poster if they don't mind if we adapt or build upon their design just to show we are being mindful of their work as they could of put a lot of hours into their designs even though it may look like a simple construction.
