  1. No it's bonded braided polyester, it's similiar to the braided cord Tandy sells but has a much tighter braid. It's sized in millimetre width I generally use 1 mm width on 8 -10 oz leather. Buying from overseas means you don't have to pay the UK VAT so it will be cheaper than Abbeys list price once you go to the checkout.
  2. Hee Hee, originally they didn't come with any packaging in the souvenir shops and it was interesting to say the least when the penny dropped with some tourists as to what part of the kangaroo they actually came from. You could see it ticking over in their mind, leg, no, paw, no, tail, no, back, no, ears, no Oh ! they were put back on the shelf rather quickly then.
  3. Definitely not, find it funny that they are considered exotic elsewhere when they jump across the road where my father in law lives and theres a mass of them that lives in the grounds of the chicken farm.
  4. Left it as is just put a rubber mat and small granite slab on it when in use, most of the stuff I carve is smallish so I can put a small wood block which holds my carving tools at the back. I keep my mallets on the shelves. When not in use I keep it in the walk in cupboard in my work room if I left it out my husband would probably try and claim it for the kitchen ha ha.
  5. Not yet there in Malaga, I did buy from them when they were in Perth city and Osborne Park. Their leather is nice, I just prefer the way Herman Oak carves for what I do though. Am hoping to get down there soon to check the new place out, wish they were open on the weekends so I could drop in on the way to the ice hockey as the ice rink for the Perth Thunder is just up the road.
  6. There in New Jersey, so I had it posted out to me took a little while to get it as they was some sort of postal back log at the time. Pot Devin and Schaefer are the main companies I have heard of for them. I don't have to do a lot so went with a manual machine if your doing a substantial amount and the lining is thickish you probably will want a motorised one. They occasionally come up on Ebay if you don't want a new one.
  7. I picked my plough gauge up for $180 as well a couple of years ago so bargains can definitely be had off of Ebay Australia.
  8. I use a small manual one, what are you wanting to put through one. I use mine for canvas linings, got it from Pot Devin very helpful people to deal with if you want more info.
  9. I bought a Bekvam Kitchen trolley from ikea for a similar purpose, I've got enough bench space in my work room but the room gets cold and the natural light is lacking in winter so it's great to be able to move it around for a more sunny spot. I carve standing up so it might not be exactly what you are after but it might give you an idea to start.
  10. Heres someone else having a go http://www.puncturedartefact.com/, looks pretty good to me. After nearly four years this thread has been going it's been great to see what people have been coming up with and that there is still an interest in it here.
  11. There are only a couple of agents in Australia for Herman Oak and so it is difficult to get the thicknesses you want. Birdsall currently have 3-4oz and I can't say I've ever seen them stock 2-3oz or the other one of Ozsaddle either. I now buy my Hermann Oak from Springfield Leather in the US cut for the size I need as neither of the ones here have that service, not sure if they do 2-3oz though as I only use the thicker stuff. Is there any reason why you only want Hermann Oak or Wickett Craig as NSW leather do have 2-3oz in their range. I buy Hermann Oak because the majority of the stuff I make is carved and I like it the best for that after having tried a few others. Just one thing if you plan on carving or tooling the wallet you might be better off with 3-4oz for the back and using something thinner for the pockets as it's really easy to go through 2-3oz when carving or tooling.
  12. They ship to me in Australia so they should ship to the US, It's been awhile since I've had to order any but I think my last postage cost was about 18 pounds that was for a few rolls though. I would think it would be a cheaper shipping to the US.
  13. Your probably going to have ring or email Abbey to find out exactly as not a lot of people here have accounts with Abbey and you can't see the prices without logging in. I don't pay that much as it has the VAT included and I don't have to pay the VAT from buying overseas.
  14. The only differences I know of is that Julius Koch has the Ritza 44 for machine sewing but Abbey don't list it at that, I'd say that is what it is though. Some of the labels on my hand sewing thread have both Tiger and Ritza 25 with others it's just Tiger or Ritza 25. The only differences I can make out on Abbey is that the Ritza comes in smaller thicknesses other than that a lot of the codes are the same and the thread looks the same. The machine stuff and Tiger have more colours compared to the handsewing listed Ritza so it might just be that they have it listed as Ritza just to differentiate the sizing for them when doing orders. With the pricing one of the other manufacturers I use for braided thread has a slightly higher price for thinner thread so that could be the case with the Ritza as well.
  15. Are you buying it off Ebay UK or Etsy if you are you would be better off buying from Abbey England http://abbeyengland.com/ when you can get the full rolls, that's the only place I know of that sells the full rolls. I once spoke to a sales rep at Julius Koch in Germany and if you aren't a very large business they won't deal with you Also couldn't find out any other distributor/wholesaler/retailer anywhere else from them for small orders they will only direct you to Abbey. I use a lot of colours in my work I was after about 50 rolls two of each colour at one time and I was still directed to Abbey. I did however come across this place recently but haven't contacted them yet http://www.jkusa.com/contact.htm I am unsure if they have the full line of the German Julius Koch or even if they are part of that group but it might be a place to start. It seems the braided threads are more popular in England, Australia, New Zealand and Europe as there are other brands around they are Zircon,Mox, and Slam but I don't think you would be able to find them easily in the US either. There are a couple of others you might be able to find they are Serabraid and Coats Classic you can try http://www.amannusa.com/ for the serabraid. I recently directed someone else to them but aren't sure whether they contacted them or not and for Coats Classic http://www.coatsindustrial.com/en/products/industrial-threads/classic they should be able to direct you to a supplier for the US as they found me one for Western Australia. I use threads from all the ones I mentioned as I'm not able to get all the colours I need from one brand they are all very similar to Tiger though if you don't have any luck with jkusa and don't want to ship from Abbey. Hope this helps a bit
  16. I've got a small set of the Carvertools mainly for the history aspect rather than use they did sell fairly well on Ebay in Australia a few years ago. I do actually use the swivel knife at times as the Tandy blades fit them. The plastic in them is nylon and they were made for beginners before you moved onto the metal tools.
  17. Hi howie, welcome back to the fold there are only a couple of retail places left they are Leather Direct in Malaga www.leatherdirect.com.au and Western Leathercraft on Lord St in Highgate www.westernleathercraft.com.au The Leather Shop in the Perth CBD closed down a couple of years ago but it looks like they still run in a different capacity www.theleathershop.com.au I mostly buy all my stuff online now though for the bigger selection but if you don't want to do that Leather Direct will be your best bet for leather they don't have much in regards to fittings and other supplies though. I haven't used Western Leathercraft since they changed hands awhile ago but you should be able to get what else you need there. If you don't mind buying online Birdsall Leather in Sydney have a pretty good selection of things www.birdsall-leather.com.au I use them for stuff that can't be shipped from overseas like Fiebings oil dye and other flammable stuff. Hope this helps a bit
  18. Yes I have seen that video did you look at the link I posted Tiger thread is polyester, this is the manufacturers website http://www.juliuskoc...wing-thread.php Nigel makes great videos and I've passed on the links to a few people who wanted to learn leather hand sewing but if you want nylon thread Tiger is not. Abbey sells nylon thread as well but it is not the Tiger/Ritza 25 brand. The nylon thread is on different shaped holders and ones Nigel shows in the video are clearly the Tiger/Ritza 25 holders. This is a label from one of mine and the actual thread, note the holders
  19. In the videos I've watched the thread definitely looks like Tiger so unless he has some other ones it's polyester not nylon. http://www.abbeyengland.com/Store/tabid/77/CategoryID/202/Category2ID/27/Level/2/Default.aspx
  20. I use tiger thread as well and I've only ever been able to find it at Abbey England, there are a couple of other ones they are Amann Serabraid, you will have to email the Amann US office and see if they can can give you a local supplier as they only seem to be set up for wholesale. The other one is the Tandy braided cord it's slightly wider than Tiger but has the same feel to sew with. There are a few other braided threads around but they aren't located in the US either so the Serabraid or Tandy stuff is probably going to be the easiest for you to try and get.
  21. There was a small article in the Rawhide Gazette that covered Shibouri (japanese tie dye) you can find it here http://www.pslac.org...dex_rawhide.htm in the November 2004 pdf. I only remember because someone else asked about it awhile ago. Hope this helps a bit Cheers, Clair
  22. Yep I agree on the face of it for those starting from scratch from no previously owned license it seems like a good option but in the future that option might not seem so rosy when the cost rises a lot they definitely won't keep it at $50 a month indefinitely once everyone is locked in. People would of been a lot happier if they had been left a choice those who like the subscription can use it and those who like the perpetual licenses can buy them from what I've read and the other designers I've spoken to this is what the main problem is. Cgtalk is still playing up but I was able to get most of the list for those looking for alternatives, full credit to Robert Ortez and those at cgtalk for putting it together. 23. Hee hee of course it's great for you, your not paying for it if I didn't have to pay for mine I would probably like it to. Two installs have always been available for Adobe products I've run a main computer and a laptop for many years. Your employers may like it when it's $50 a month but that is likely to change when the price starts creeping up. Sorry this won't stop piracy one bit Adobe Muse is a subscription only program and is already readily available on the net the hacker kiddies will see it as a challenge not a deterrent and If you read through Adobes analysis reports on the move you will see it's purely a cash grab to appease the stockholders. Yes they are entitled to make money every business has that goal it's just the way they go about it that riles a lot of users up. In Australia they really have messed users around with how edu licenses could be used compared to the rest of the world to the doubling of pricing and looking like they are finally giving us a fair go after the government stepped in only to have them come back with this subscription only option. Also why isn't the price the same across the world and why are some countries individuals restricted to the the team only option purely on this it looks like they are gouging customers. The main thing though if this model works you can bet other software business's will look to it as well do you really want to eventually rent every program you use on your computer including your operating system. This cartoon I thought was pretty funny http://whattheduck.com/home?page=0%2C4 For anyone looking at alternatives there is a pretty good list on the cgtalk forum, their site is having problems at the moment so I will link to it once it's working properly again.
  24. Weavers does a white pigmented finish well they used to I don't have a current catalogue, I believe someone here may of used it possibly Prince the fellow who makes the brilliant armour.
  25. I would swap now to open source as well if I didn't have to share files with pre press printers and other designers. I'm going to have a look at Gimp and Inkscape though and will probably learn them as well for when my CS6 set doesn't work any more. Already had dabbled in Blender for 3D after Autodesk took over Alias. We'll see how Adobe goes there share price started sliding after the announcement, a lot of annoyed people around at the moment which is probably making their shareholders jittery. Also will be interesting to see if Adobe are bought before a government enquiry here again after there Australian change of heart for pricing. Now it's clear why they did that to push everyone onto their subscription crap.
