A birthday present...
Hilly replied to Tina's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Tina, your creativity never ceases to amaze me! You are truly gifted. Love everything about the purse! I'm a big frog fan, also. I even have a tattoo of a frog. Thanks for sharing! -
belt and first sheridan attempt

Yes, this is a very interesting subject. Thanks for sharing. Tom, are you going to carve the photo you just posted? It would make for a very interesting project! -
I really like the updated site, Bruce.

I live in the small town of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, otherwise known as the gateway to the pineries. We have the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, an awesome place to get smart. We have the Wisconsin river running 2 blocks from my house. Lots of good fishing and beautiful scenery just a minute away. Tons of great spots to go where you can hunt for white tailed deer, turkey, ruffed grouse, and migratory fowl, just minutes from home. We also have a great little brewery here. After spending enough time in the Point brewery, who cares about that other stuff?

I'd be scared to sit on it. Has it had it's shots? Seriously, it's pretty neat. Hilly

I'd tell him nicely, but firmly that the price is the same, whether or not it comes with a clip. Tell him you'd be happy to keep the clip if he doesn't want/need it.

Why does it have to be used? One of our very own members makes some real nice string makers at a good price. Check out this thread. Scroll down the page till you see it.

Never spray anything thicker than milk through an airbrush. If it's thicker than milk, an HVLP gun or spray gun works better.

Has anyone mailed a leather item to Australia?
Hilly replied to CarvedOn's topic in How Do I Do That?
I sent a leather notebook to Oz in one of our "pay it forwards". Although USPS is much less expensive than UPS, it still cost me about $40 to send a package weighing around 2 pounds. -
I paid $1 yard here . But that's just for 1/8" or 3/32". The 1/4" is more costly.

Is this the same as the Elmers glue we used as kids?

Beautiful work, as always. Every aspect of your work looks well thought out, and every swivel knife cut looks so deliberate. Thanks for sharing.

The best material to use for your cutting area is HDPE plastic. It's the same plastic that white plastic cutting boards are made of. It does not dull or grab the cutting edge of your knifes like rubber matt or wood. I just go to Walmart or similar, and buy myself the biggest white cutting board they have. They last a long time, and when they get scarred up, you just flip em over and use the other side. You can also find sources of large HDPE sheets online, if you want a really big piece of it. Hope this helps. Hilly

I have been thinking of the same kind of wedding gift! I want to bind a bunch of acid free paper for a wedding album/scrap book type of gift. On the cover, I want to carve their names the date of their wedding, maybe a cross and a couple of wedding rings in gold leaf. I also want to incorporate the words "With This Ring", possibly on the spine. My biggest problem is getting the paper bound!

To be honest, I never even heard about Etsy.com till I came here. Or any of the other sites mentioned. Maybe I've just live a deprived life

I might be tempted to cover a piece of 1/8" plywood (the same size as the interior bottom of bag) or similar with lining leather, and drop it into the bottom of the bag. Maybe put a couple rivets through to hold it in place? Or screw in 4 of those little plastic "feet" from underneath like the feet found on luggage? For the flap on your bag, are you going to attach a handle, such as found on a briefcase? If so, I'd use some light metal like esantoro uses in his maverick bags. It would reinforce the handle area, and keep your handle from tearing through the flap. You would have to line the flap if you didn't want it to show... Just my $0.02

If you're looking for any specific type (or description) of foam, your best bet is to call an upholstery supply place, and tell them exactly what your needs are. They can steer you to what you need to use for the project at hand. Be prepared though, foam is almost worth its weight in gold. Hope this helps a bit.

Marlon, I used to feel that way, too. Then someone recommended a really cool video that will have you doing turkshead knots with herringbone interweaves, gaucho knots, 4, 6, and 8 strand braids, terminal knots, etc. in no time at all. It's MUCH easier than trying to follow the directions in Bruce Grant's books because there's someone showing you how to do it all step by step. It's very easy to understand, and I would never be braiding if it weren't for that video. They also have other videos, once you've mastered the basics. If you get the video, you won't have to *sigh* anymore I'm not affiliated, just recommending a great tool. Hilly

skull bag
Hilly replied to Scary Leatherworks's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That's very.....................interesting, in a macabre kinda way! What kind of closure did you put on it? Is it a man bag, or a purse, or??? Oh jeez, I get the heebie-jeebies just looking at that thing! -
Tom, you pulled it off with great style, as usual. Great work!

Welcome! Your work is very nice. No need to let your ego hide in the corner. Nicely laid out website, too.

My First Project!
Hilly replied to CarvedOn's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very nice! Your father will love it. Wish my first project came out looking that good. -
It's getting to the point that the state wants you to have a tax # just to have a yard/garage sale these days! If you find a penny on the sidewalk, they want to know about it! If I were you (just a hobbiest), I'd just leave a phone number on your web page where interested parties can contact you, and leave it at that.

Hilly replied to RMB Custom Leather's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
You're right. 2010 is just around the corner. Hopefully, we can get this country back on track.
