February Keep Making Stuff Challenge
Erystawi replied to thefanninator's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
A bit late, but here are my dopp kit. I had some trouble with straps and loops, had to make new ones and move them, so not quite happy about the placement of them, I may have had an issue with the pattern somehow, old and blind as I am... LOL I had much fun making it love all of your work, and looking at your beautiful items -
Found some info, searching the web, as I often see leatherbit over here. (loosly translated via translate.google) Leather bit is made of vegetable tanned leather and is free of artificial additives. The bit molds to the horse's mouth and is soft and comfortable for the horse. No edges or seams that bothers the horse's mouth. Supre to all horses, especially for young horses during habituation, sensitive horses and who generally do not like usual bits. Very good on cold winter days. Leather bits created and sewn by hand, adapted to each horse. How to customize a leather bit? Leather bits are made 1 cm greater than one normal, to provide space for the bit to get adapt the horse's mouth, so you do not add anything when you measure your horse. If your horse is 11.5 cm it is this measure that you send. Once you get the bit, it shall be in an oil bath for about 15 min and hung to dry overnight. Furthermore maintained it by rinsing it well after each use and then to give it regular oil bath about every other week or so. The oil must be vegetable, such as. sunflower oil, coconut mm. Crome tanned leather are never used, as most horses are likely to be allergic. This goes for all horse tack, no crome tanned.

Half Veg Tan Same As Re-Tan? What Are They Good For?
Erystawi replied to jmorton's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Oh, I know about the half tan leather! Commonly known in norwegian as "rårandslær" or "valklær". (loosly translated to raw core leather). This is a veg tan (half veg tan) who is mostly used for knife sheats, and other sheats, boxes etc. It will shrink more than normal veg tan, but will hold form and be VERY stiff/hard. Very easily shaped when wet, holds form much better than normal tanned hides. Hope this helps -
I love this pattern, and have a question, how would you go ahead if you wantet to convert one side to a coinpocket? Thanks!

Thank you so much for comments, I will not knife this bag its a fun red bag, think I will hold on to it for now Eva

Hello, yes I too have grow fond of the little red bag and its charm, its not big enough for a laptop, a good size motorcycle wallet and some other small stuff is all one can fit in this one.
-
Hello, I am a fan of reusing hardware, buckles and such, and went to a lokal reuse marked and found a red bag. Didn't like it at first, but hey, buckles looks REALLY nice to cut out and reuse! Once at home, with knife in hand, I looked at the buckels and it says Mulberry... and I like, what?? this cannot be, its coated canvas, not leather. It has the mulberry tree on all of the rivets, all sides of the buckles, says made in England written in goldt on pocket inside, but it really seems old, like old coated canvas. So my consern is, is this a authentic Mulberry Blenheim vintage coated canvas (1971-1996?) (yes, I had to google it) and I need to put my knife down, or is it a fake, and I can reuse buckels, pretty strong buckels? any ideas?

Totally agree, I don't like it when it doesn't say whats in the bottles! -working in a paint-shop we easy can find all safty data easy, on all the products. Then again i don't know what Bick 4 is, a finish i guess? As a finish I am now experienting with some artist acrylic finish, want to see what it does PS anyone heard of FoxWax? Thank you both for the information about where to find harness hardware, it is for great helt. But then again, the norwegian/scandinavian harness is quite different then other harnesses. My sister want me to start making the smaller parts for her old harness, and she would absolutely love it to be all brass, but we have a hard time finding brass buckles who is suitable for harness.. so then again just ordinary buckles must be what we can work with. For example, I am going to make her two breastcollar straps, (neck and brast strap for collar) and we have not found brass buckle. The buckle we have found is 40mm round (see picture below) but no one in brass, and then again the norwegian "ore" may not come in brass at all ("shaft-plate). So I guess we will end up with ordinary hardware anyway. But price here in norway is about 35 dollar a pice... I think this is quite expensive, but then again, maybe it isnt? What do you pay for buckle like this? And if you like to read about norwegian/scandinavian harness, take a look here (english): http://www.olafnyby.net/NorHarnPages3-07/Norwegian%20Harness%203-07.htm pickture of harness buckle norwegian style for brast strap:

I'm going to a craft fair in last of november, and are exited, and really would love to have some more ideas. At this moment I am making can covers and key rings. Eva

Hello, I wonder if any of you could direct me to a good site to buy driving/draft horse harness hardware? Very interested in brass show hardware items. Thanks, Eva.

Hello, I am looking to buy hardware for dog collars, like the martingale, but can not find out where, or maybe I am not searching the right way... (lost in translation) attaching picture to show what I mean: the D ring or O ring with the chain and ring for fastning the lead.

what you mean the linen thread is flat? Is it one particular brand? The linen thread I use is 3 braid, 5 or 6 braid linen thread, called 12/3 or 18/3, 18/5, 18/6. I suppose there are more brands of threads out there
