Thanks everyone! I knew y’all would know and would offer great advice too. There used to be a couple material/ garment factories near here, and our quilters use a number of the machines to put together tops that have mostly straight stitches with long runs. We have insured there is oil in the reservoirs. Since that attachment won’t likely ever be used by us, I wanted to make sure it wasn’t something useful before removing. Thanks again !

I use Fiebings Pro Dye (not water-based). Should I still dilute? Seems most of you that dip are using water-based dye. Or can I still dip dye using Pro Dye full strength? Thanks !

Dip dye? I guess that means you have lots of dye in some receptacle? I thought I had a lot when I bought a quart instead of 4 oz ! Do you just dip in fairly quickly, let drip dry, then lay out to dry? Then pour dye back in bottle or container? Sorry dip dye was new to me. THANKS!

I'm making a few binocular holders that have lots of 3/4" straps over shoulder, under arm etc. As I made my first one I realized, I'm spending lots of time staining and re-staining all these 3/4" straps. IS THERE A QUICKER WAY TO STAIN THESE THAN TEDIOUSLY USING THE WOOL DAUBERS ? I've used an air brush on large projects, but with small straps I waste more dye spraying than I get on the straps. I’m thinking that all or most of the black round steel would need to be removed and replaced with two pieces of flat steel of desired bed size. Handle pulled would bring two pieces of flat steel together to “click” items. Others thoughts?

Has anyone ever modified a manual turret punch to be used as a clicker for leather, rather than punching holes in steel? I can get a working turret punch cheap locally and was just wondering if anyone’s done this before? Pic attached

Has anyone used the Weldwood Contact Cement Gel? I normally use the regular stuff, but in a rush the only thing available locally was the gel. How does the strength of the bond of the gel compare with the regular contact cement? I was using it to put a leather cover on some diaries our church gave to mothers this past week. It was definitely easier to work with, spreading with a brush or putty knife. I was just wondering if others have used it (gel) and can comment on the strength of the bond compared to the regular contact cement. Thanks!

Hi, I have a used Boss (aluminum not older cast iron model) that I will be selling real soon, just haven't gotten pictures taken and posted yet. I have the Boss (retails $1495) with the Master Crafter Accessory kit (retails $295) and also the flatbed attachment (retails $135). Retail items can be viewed at http://www.tippmannindustrial.com and looking at the Boss or Accessories tab. I also have some needles, original spool of thread, and some extra bobbins and a light. All with original box. Is in great condition, I just found a good deal on a Cobra so upgraded. I just used it as a hobby machine, so has been used sparingly, is not a machine that has been used lots in a business etc with lots of hours on it. It will be posted on here very soon, and I'm glad to give you first chance. I will be asking $950 plus $25 shipping, with PayPal payment, unless arranged otherwise. Shipment will be more than $25, as I'll have to send flatbed in separate shipment, but I will cover the difference. I'm in VA, 2 hours from Richmond, but Boss ships fine at 25 pounds.

Your ideas have reminded me how many times I've looked down on my floor of scrap veg tan and quickly cut a piece of stiff veg tan to the size I need to spread some glue on an edge. I've also used Popsicle sticks. I'm gonna try the old credit cards and the plastic artists tools, the glue not sticking is nice, makes them reusable. Heck I might even find a stiffer plastic bottle/container and cut it into strips to use. Thanks, any other ideas, post away, you'll help yes all!

What are the different ways you apply contact cement? Surely I'm not the first person to ask myself "when is someone gonna come up with a convenient way to apply contact cement? i just got back from 20 yrs overseas and there was a local maker Henkel who made it in expensively in 2 different sizes of tubes and also in cans from 1/2 quart to a gallon. On larger surfaces I use a putty knife/spatula, but what do y'all use on small areas, say just on the edge where you want the sew line to hold prior to sewing? Don't want to hijack the thread, but this would help SailorJohn also. I have tube rivets and even the caps, but am unsure how/when to attach the caps. Do I use the tube rivet as normal, and then hammer the cap over the top of the exposed rivet that was spread or flowered?

If you search "veg tan goat" on ebay, you'll come up with about 15 hides. I have not personally worked with veg tanned goat. When I need something like you are talking about , I normally take a thicker veg-tanned cowhide, and have it thinned/split to the needed thickness.

Dwight, that works good for me IF I am using a standard round-tip needle, but if you are using a chisel-point needle to cut through thicker layers of veg tan, if I go back over as you mention, I pretty regular find the chisel cuts some of the thread making it fray or sometimes almost cuts the thread in two. . . If using a chisel point is the only thing to do is pull thread on one side, knot and add a little super glue, or burn/melt end with lighter/match. Interested in any other thoughts...Thanks !

When picturing this in my mind, I also recalled some of my failed attempts at plumbing repairs, when I didn't have a cut-off valve and thought I could just unscrew that little thing and screw it back on real quick even though water was gushing out with ridiculous force. Sure glad to hear others have success when doing things like this, it gives me hope one day I may too succeed. I must admit, this idea is genius ! I'm feeling confident enough to try it.

Hey, how did you plug the holes ? My mind is thinking....squirt a bunch of foam, then pull the can out, and stick something in there REALLY fast before the foam expands and comes out the hole. . . . for those from that generation, couldn't you just imagine Lucy (I Love Lucy) trying to do this and all the foam coming out everywhere ? Anyway, would appreciate hearing how you managed to get the holes plugged before the foam came out and how you plugged. Thanks, TZHunter

Hi, what I do if I can't find a pattern for something is to find a cheaper model that "fits" well and is the correct size, then disassemble it, and you have your pattern, and you already know it fits....problem with a pattern is you don't know if it will fit until you sew it....when you go backwards you have a little more assurance it will turn out ok. . . also, if the one you are disassembling are thinner, you may need to make yours slightly larger if you are using a thicker material. Good luck ! If you are doing that hard work, you deserve some GOOD gloves !
