That's a wonderfully professional set up. Kudos, Drac. I just wish there was a closeup pic of the inventory. What are all those things?

I don't braid, but what you show makes some sense to me. But what I really like is the idea of using the shaving brush for saddle soaping. Thanks for that tip.

NIce job!. I've seen those watching the climbers, and I knew somebody had to have made them, and now I know...YOU...lol

There's actually quite a few reasons, not to forget crappy metal.... Holes too small, making you force the needle through, bending it...snap Too big of a knot at the bottom of the needle, forcing you to add strength to pull through...snap Needle too small for thickness of leather...snap Use a harness needle on belt type thickness. Use a smaller needle (therefore more brittle) on thin leathers. Now, ask me how I know...lol I'm sure the other handsewers can chime in with more precise info, like what they call all those different needles...lol

If the customer does not want/need adjustments, a simple measurement from peg to peg will do for the peg slots on the strap. If the customer wears his strap at various lengths, either the music, sitdown, standup, or switching guitars, you'll need to figure out an adjustment method, say a buckle, or a slotted adjustment strap, or other...your choice (and the bane of all strap makers). Many users want it all, without hardware to scratch their instruments. Take a look thru the guitar strap section, for some different ways. I wish we could get the old pictures pre-crash, there were some good ones, if I remember right.

That's just wonderful! My son is 35, and I still remember the coming home day. Treasure it always....

That has cool written all over it.

Hey Ed, glad to see you back. I'm trying to make a certain kind of wallet, and .5 oz leather would do it.
-
You've got a little bit of skill in those hands of yours. Nice work, and thank for the lesson.

Thanks, ETW Grumpy. I should go on up to Raleigh, and see what they have on hand. Sometimes you can strike gold. I did just pick up some nice kip from local Zack White, it's almost thin enough. I'm going to try it for my idea.

This seems like a good source for us drawing impaired. Thanks for the link in the first image. http://www.spraypaintstencils.com/

Well, it seems the Google has been called on the carpet all day, and so badly, they had to say "Oops" http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080...-change-it.html But as usual with the Google, things aren't always what they seem... "So, there you have it: a tempest in a (chrome) teapot. Not that it's the only one; as Ina Fried of News.com points out, Chrome's "Omnibar" can also access all keystrokes a user types, and Google will store some of this information along with IP addresses. "

As with everything Google does, there are privacy concerns. Google makes money on targeted advertising. The more they know about your web surfing the more money they make. Read their EULA first before diving in. I have heard very good things about their browser, it's tempting, but I'll wait a bit.

What a great story. Congrats to you Alan. Not only a Leatherworker, but some sort of Archealogist too!

My Old Man sent me that one awhile back. I laughed pretty good. But you still sucked me in..so, I guess I'm not a quick study...lol

Help with dye project
rdb replied to MsDragonfly's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I have found Feibing's Oil Dyes to be superior to their regular dye. I would suggest trying them. Resolene is an Acrylic better used sprayed than rubbed on, or cut with water to lighten it for rub use. For sealers. I will use Atom wax, Snow Proof, Bag Kote, Tan Kote, etc. Dying before molding will always have it's inconsistencies. Dipping an entire finished product in an oil dye mixed with neatsfoot oil may give you better results. Experiment. Others will join in soon with their advice, I'm sure. -
Welcome MsDragonfly, you've come to the right place. We all share, and learn from each other. As a former hunter, I can appreciate the Spring Turkey, although they usually got the best of me. Damn smart for a stupid bird...lol Can't wait to see your contributions.

I've just received a shipment from amazingmagnets.com They are amazing. They are some sort of metal covered ceramic. In the extreme, (as I tend to push things. They can break. I threw one at a metal object from 10 ft away, but that's another story....lol But I think they will be perfect for all the projects.

Latest items I have been working on
rdb replied to Jordan's topic in Books, Journals and Photo Albums
I like the first one (Cross + Roses). Boy! A Bible Cover Seller in Provo, why does that say Kaching!. -
Thanx SmokinP! I think everyone's right, the belt loop is probably best. Stick finger in hole push up lighter. Craftsman..nope machine stitched. It would be a much better product, but think flea market. If the product actually sold, I would definitely offer the up model. fishguy, you're right, and if any product sold well, or needed cost cutting, that's the only way to go in this modern world. I've worn it all day, both ways, I kinda like it but I'm going back to the drawing board on this one.
-
Thanx Tom. Yep, they are getting rarer and rarer. The bike crowd still uses them. n this flea market crowd I'm in lately, I've had a few requests for these, and cig cases. The old rule was, if by the third time somebody asks for something, you'ld better have it. PS: I think it was Jordan who did one awhile back, pancake, I think. I remember liking it, if that's the one.

Thanx guys, just a fun simple one. They are oil dyed (neatsfoot and walnut oil dye mixed) UK, The zippo aint going to fall out very soon. It's a tight mold. The finger pushing up is totally necessary. Some people want clips, some the belt loop, I thought both might work, not sure. Like I said above, probably ought to make one or the other or both. I have seen all the kinds you have described, with flaps, and snaps. I'm just trying to come up with something new, and not copy someone else's. It may require a dozen trips to the drawing board, especially keeping it in this type price range. In the meantime, you could give it your own try, now that I got you thinking about it. I'm sure there's a hundred better ways to do this. That's the challenge for us, I guess.

Everything I looked at seemed overkill for a lighter... So I tried to simplify it, even still it's too complicated. At least it's small, 3 1/2" tall by 2 1/2". Takes about 1/2 hr to cut out, oil dye, glue up and assemble ( I will get that down to about 15-20 min. after a few more...$12 price tag? I made it to clip on, or belt slide. I probably should make two kinds, one clip, one belt. What do you think?

Happy Happy!! I hope you got a new leathertool for your birthday present. If not, go buy one tomorrow!
