  1. I'm sure, any one of us would like to give it a go, The hard part will be your choosing one...lol. Take a look at Esantoro's posts, and his "Maverick" bags. They are super. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?s...amp;#entry65786
  2. I love my black vinegaroon so much, I want to try and get some browns. They say walnut shells work real good, but all I have available in my yard is these shells . I think they are Hickory. Anyways, I filled a bucket with them and some white vinegar, and let them set for a week. I dunked some leather in for this keycase, but it was a very faint color change. Maybe I didn't let it brew long enough, I don't know yet. But I left the keycase blank in the brew overnight, let it dry out, and oiled it up. This is the color I got. I kinda like it. If the color in the pictures come out alright, maybe you can tell me what you think.
  3. Thanx for the backing me up, but I think you just called me Old at the same time...lol. I guess things change, even in the Commonwealth.
  4. Geez, that looks classy! Between the carving and the color, i looks like it belongs on a movie set in some plush room.
  5. I'm having the same problem with my patcher. I have had mixed answers. I was told it takes a 120 and uses 69 thread. The manual has a chart that says the 120 needle takes #30 cotton and 70/3 for linen
  6. Tina sounds like trooper. good on her. Sounds like there should be some "overnight " parties at the store for few nights..Bring all the Big Dogs, Rotweillers, Pitbulls for "company".
  7. I don't think comments will help, but at least you know everyone here agrees with you. For now though, I'm editing the Topic Title, until I get overuled by the top dogs. Just to keep it family friendly.
  8. Here in NC, they call everything "Coke". Back up in Massachusetts we call it "Tonic". I still slip and say tonic a lot. Man, do I get quizzical looks
  9. Happy, Happy!. What present did you give yourself?
  10. I've been looking at this picture all night, and couldn't figure something out..."why would the weight of one person drive that high fender down to touch the tire?". I keep seeing the axis of that shock off by a few inches at the bottom, tells me the shock is not in the ideal top location....almost like the top should be moved to the rear a few inches. I like the idea of the shorter shocks anyways, I'm hoping one of our people who is more mechanic than I am will support my theory, or tell me I'm full of it...Either way I get to sleep...lol
  11. Well, I'll jump in. I use bridle leather on both layers. I know of another guy around me who uses bullhide both sides. Some use the veg. But whatever one you use, reverse the grain, meaning ...turn one upside opposite to the other, that way the weaknesses won't match, instead will even out.
  12. Zack's has 11-13, and even thicker on a regular basis. He was down to 3 maybe 4 skins left. I opened one. It was pretty clean. They are US hides tanned in mexico. Dang, I forgot to ask how much. Just call him.
  13. Do tou mean these? http://www.hansonrivet.com/w78.htm
  14. I've got to go pick up some small things, but if anyone wants me to check on something like skirting, or leather in general, I'll be glad to. I'll bring the camera if you want pictures of the leather , or whatever. I'm leaving at 2pm EST. If you read this too late, I'll just note your requests for next time.
  15. This is B&M ( Glass jar beans and the brown bread are really the only important things: http://www.bgfoods.com/bm/bm_products.asp Brown Bread smothered in butter..gee what y'all are missing....wicked pissah I'm staying out of the "Cue fued...trust me, it'll happen
  16. As with all these type questions the best place to check is with the source. Customs is probably a hit or miss situation, depending on arrival time, hot shot TSA, or if it's cloudy out. I did find this piece which gives a little info, and a phone number: Fish & Wildlife Fish and Wildlife are subject to import and export restrictions, prohibitions, permits, certificates, and quarantine requirements that cover: Wild birds, mammals, marine mammals, reptiles, crustaceans, fish, and mollusks; Any part or product thereof, such as skins, feathers, eggs; and Products and articles manufactured from wildlife and fish. Endangered species of wildlife and products made from them are prohibited from importation and exportation. All ivory and ivory products made from elephant or marine ivory are generally prohibited. Antiques containing wildlife parts may be imported provided they can be documented as being at least 100 years old. Federal regulations do not authorize the importation of any wildlife or fish into any state of the United States if the state's laws or regulations are more restrictive than any applicable federal treatment. Wild mammals or birds taken, killed, sold, possessed, or exported to the United States in violation of any foreign laws are also not allowed entry into the United States. If you contemplate importing articles made from wildlife such as tortoise-shell jewelry, leather goods, articles made from whalebone, ivory, skins, or furs, contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Law Enforcement, P.O. Box 3247, Arlington, VA 22203-3247, USA, before you leave for the States. Ask for the pamphlet Fish and Wildlife from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (for publications call 304-876-7203, or fax a request to 304-876-7689).
  17. I sell a lot of belts, and I can tell what width belt a person will want from 3 aisles down at the fair. Older heavy set guys will look at nothing else but 1.5" belts. I only make the 1.75" on request. Most pants now do even fit more than a 1.5". And there's a new trend that's dropping the pant loops down to 1.25". They buy an 1.5" and come back to me to buy 1.25" cause most of their pants wont take the wider one. Yuppie/businessmen types, and 30ish women finger the 1.25. Not saying their equated...lol, but I'm just reporting the facts. The Y/B types go for the plain black and brown, sometimes Tan bridle leather type, both the shiny finish ones, and the more matted finish from bridle sides. Designwork is not important to them The women seem to want just a tad of design. They like colored ones, red, blue, green, etc. I made a bunch of 1", and 1/2" belts because all the "fashion indicators" said the skinny belt was in. Forget that hogwash, nobody wants them, unless they want me to cut a full length one down for a kid. In most cases, I just make one right therefor the kid, instead of cutting. The Spanish guys love to look at my 1.5 stamped ones, because they all are attracted to the fancier type design belts, but so far I'm not selling to them much. I think it's because mine are a bit sedate in even the more heavily stamped belts. They are buying the Arrowhead basketweave ones though, but price breaks on those tend to put many of them off.
  18. tashabear, now we're talkin' good food. I'm in the Carolinas now, but you can't take the Boston out of the boy. Apple Pie for breakfast woohoo! Ray, you haven't lived until you've been to a Clambake/Lobster feast on the Dunes of Cape Cod. Steamers with Lobster cooked over hot stones, and buried in the sand. Now Yankees are kind of regimented, in that we eat certain things regularly. First, and foremost is Saturday night's Beans and Hotdogs (Sidenote: we call it supper, not dinner). B&M beans and Brownbread. There's not a lot of us eating the brownbread nowadays, but it's a sign you're from Massachusetts, for sure. Then, there's "Prince Spaghetti Day". Pasta night is Wednesday. Sometimes, it was "American Chop Suey" Sunday, is traditionally the boiled Dinner like tashabear relates....don't forget the boiled baby onions in butter and the whole cranberries sauce, and of course, three baked pies to choose for dessert; Apple, Blueberry, and Mince But here' where the arguing starts....Barbecue. Down here, they simply call it "Cue". Throughout the South there are various Regional concotions of sauce that people will go to war over defending. You got your Memphis style, Vinegar base, Mustard base, etc. Here in NC there are three versions that can erupt into civil war over. Now that's all fine and good for the folks down here, but when I break out my Yankee Tomato based sweet barbecue ribs, there's not a lot of them that doesn't just shut up, and keep eating. Not many people realize that Massachusetts was truly an Aqua/Agri culture, with many farmers, and fisherman. Barbecue chicken right from the roost smothered in sauce, and cooked over hardwood slowly in our cinder block firepits...hmmmm I'm hungry now
  19. Most excellent stuff. You should be proud of his work, not too mention the built in guitar strap trade you should have...lol Before I was to take up leatherwork again, I was going to build acoustics, but I needed some money to buy materials and specialized tools. So I made up some straps for my local luthier friend, to make the money...long story short, the straps took off, and I was forced to buy more leather...here I am.
  20. From my experiences on the internet, this is called a GBCW, otherwise known a s GoodBye Cruel World. The typical first response in any forum to one of these is... "Don't let the door hit you in the ass." I am closing this thread. Prodigal sons are always welcome back, although somewhat more humble.
  21. My PMs with Kevin at that time are also gone. This is his site if you would like to try and contact him. If you know about hard times, try and help out. If you have never known hard times, you should try and help out. http://www.choppersaddles.com/
  22. my usual fallback here in the states: http://www.eleatherworks.com/product.php?p...=552&page=2 In this thread Topic, there are quite a few links for England: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?s...gland+suppliers Maybe someone can come up with a very specific answer, but this should help a little.
  23. Truly Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never imagined for a minute it was this big. You kept saying "box". That thing is a Hope Chest for a Queen.
  24. Finally, NOW I understand where Mattmatt is coming from. Leatherworkers aren't usually very good at too much else other than skins. That's why we ask questions of Art about sewing machines, even though many of us have one. This site is about the craft itself, and of course marketing is a big part of that. There have been many Topics about marketing, by way of how to sell at fairs, what price to be charging for work, both new and repairs, consignments, and some internet questions. A little searching will show them. I'm going to bet that there are not too many internet experts among us. A few are wised up to the ways of the "tubes", but most would not be considered SEO experts. It is a field unto itself, and a new one at that. If you were to Google SEO, you would find millions of pages about it. Which advice to use, and which to ignore, I suppose you do so at your own gain or peril. It is not particularly applied to leather trade, but more a universal science. Look at the other related forums, like knifemaking, and motorcycle types, and you will see many of our members are also fairly active there. They are using other forums to promote themselves. I don't know how much success they are meeting with, because they keep that stuff close to vest as it were, as any business man would. The origin of this Topic was a bit put-offish to some here, and so the actual marketing information got lost in the tide. I'm sure Mattmatt, that if you were ask specific questions in a new thread, you would get all kinds of people jumping in with all sorts of help. Especially any specific questions from school. I'm sure homework was never very big with any of us, but add the word leather to it, and we just might suprise you. There really isn't any kind of newbie/oldie thing going on here, except that there are people here who truly love the craft. We want us all to do well, make beautiful things, and be successful. So never be afraid to jump in here, and please do share any information. Even us old people can still use to learn a trick or two. We all wish you great success in school, and with your Leather, and hope to see your projects displayed here. From 5140 to 7517
