I'm going to do a saddle tan to match my seat.

Here's the beginning of a set of saddlebags for my ShovelheadSoftail. They're larger than most but should hold my leather gear and some cold beer. This is a mock up/trail fit as i still got some more carving on the top panel and lid side panel, trimming, staining , lacing and to make another one to match.

Right now i build custom motorcycles, rebuilds and repairs by day and leather work at night, mostly seats but i'm branching off into what ever i can make out of leather. I'm working on a set of saddle bags for my ShovelheadSoftail now and some customers stuff. I'm an ASE Certified Master Technician, have been for over 30 years, worked on automoblies for 40+ years. Started working on Harley-Davidsons about 30 years ago as a hobby. Opened my own shop in 2003 working on H-D's and building custom motorcycles I got a couple of builds going on now. Started leather work last year, i needed a seat for my custom bobber. Got hooked on leather! Between the motorcycle shop and leather work , i keep real busy, beats the time clock any day!

Hi Susan, Good looking Sportster, I had one just like it. I'd recommend changing the shocks to Progressive shocks and maybe just alittle shorter. Replace the rear chain with a slightly longer one to get the rear tire away from the fender where it's rubbing. If you want to redo your seat, i'd recommend making a new seat pan. I redid a Mustang Seat, the customer wanted something thinner, The Mustang seat has a lot of foam making up the shape of the seat. After removing the foam the seat pan was not shaped properly. i had to weld some steel to the seat pan to make it look right. Here's some photos. After welding some steel, just cut to shape.

I'll add decorative lace to the hat band soon

Looks Great as always! How was that evo to carve? Tight in the fin area? I got a customer that wants a Shovelhead motor on his seat. I love Shovelheads so it'll make it more fun for me. Here's a picture of my Bobber i just finished , I won 1st place in the Bobber Class at the Southwest Veterans Bike show a couple of months ago. Oil tank, Rear fender, chain guard, oil filter/license plate bracket all brass grips, pegs, brake and shift levers, 2 inch stainless steel exhaust pipes with brass and stainless baffles, and custom leather seat all hand made by me.

I dyed a few items including a couple of motorcycle seats with vinegaroon. I used steel wool and white vinegar. you need to degrease the steel wool first, i soaked mine in gasoline and burned it off,(carefully) put it in a large plastic container ,add vinegar. wait about 4 days, and you're good to go. Strain the solution before using.

What is the best weight leather to use for Saddle bags for a motorcycle. I'll be using veg tan for tooling reasons and the bags will get a lot of use and miles so they need to be strong and retain shape I'm going to make myself a Xmas present. thanks

very cool! love the design, is it your design? -
Looks great David! A little different than the seats you usually do. Is the top panel going to be plain?
-
Thanks for the compliments. when i started this project i had no idea how i was going to do wood grain, i have done small things that i would scratch and it looked OK , but this big of a cross would show the scratching too much. I started looking at wood and grain and i downloaded pictures of wood grain and practiced on scape with the swivel knife until it looked OK. The vinegaroon was applied with sheep wool, it is dyed all over and in the cracks, it's just a bad photo.
