How to Determine if a Thread is Bonded Nylon or Bonded Poly?
Evo160K replied to Evo160K's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Well that's interesting, I'll try it.. Thanks Uwe. Having been in the safety business for many years, I've tested clothing fibers looking for synthetics by holding a flame near to see if they melt, but I've never smelled them. Synthetics will melt around flames and molten metals and stick to the skin....cotton burns to ashes. -

Thanks Mikesc, thanks Glenn, that gives me a good frame of reference. Glenn, the question was more general than specific. Thanks -
Did these machines ever working correctly for you, or did you just acquire them?

I'm restoring two Singer 45 industrial machines and would like to buy a couple of original Simanco presser feet, feed dogs and throat plates. Would you please PM the Simanco part number, a picture showing the part number and a price? Thank you.

Anyone Have Experience With A Singer 45K53?
Evo160K replied to Evo160K's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thank you good people one and all for your information......really helpful, thank you. @ dirkba Here are the service and parts manuals for the 112W116 in case you haven't seen them: http://dixiesewingmachine.tzo.com/MANUALS/SINGERSERVICE2/112W116,W120,113W110-inst.pdf http://dixiesewingmachine.tzo.com/MANUALS/SINGERPARTS6/112W116.pdf Dirka, what parts are you missing? As best I can tell, the K53 feeds and adjusts differently than the 211W116. The upper feed can be adjusted from zero to 1/4" of feed, and the position of the feeding foot can be adjusted closer to the needle or farther from the needle, something I believe would be needed for sewing "piping" or "edging" on a cylinder. Basically the top feed and bottom feed can be adjusted so they are feeding together at the same rate or so they move at different rates. The 45K53.pdf link above that gmace99 posted discusses this feature. Here is a link to some videos I put on Dropbox.com, showing the machine adjusted to the extremes. There doesn't appear to be big changes, so I'm not sure what's supposed to happen or how to adjust it. That's, of course, why I'm asking for information from people who have experience with the K53. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yjh1qarw9hnzeyq/AABFMzQFDgIwnqmq_ywk9-44a?dl=0 @ Constabulary The machine you found on ebay is the one I followed to fabricate a couple of parts my machine was missing.- 6 replies

About a month ago I came across a Singer 45K53 cylinder arm machine that has independently adjustable upper and lower feeds. It came with an illustrated parts list, but no operators manual. I'd like to learn what I can about how it operates and how it's adjusted. I've looked extensively for the manual, but no luck.. If any one is familiar with the 45K53 or has a manual, I would sure appreciate the opportunity to chat with you. Thank you, thank you very much.

Hercules, My Singer and servo were pre-owned, the servo had an obviously modified card in it, so I don't know what was in there originally. I suspect the card shown at 10:44 of the first video is what they look like from the factory. It appears to be a piece of paper or card. After spending some time making and shading a card to my liking, I learned the less light getting to the "receiver" end of the light beam, (the top I believe), the faster the machine will run, and since the beam is round you can't just block out the light by cutting a straight edge through it.....that may not give you the gradient/control you want. So he seems to be changing the transparency by shading with a pencil and changing the shape. Good thing about it, with patience you can set your speed to start and progress any way you like. It's really quite amazing how you can modify your servo.

The Singer 45K53 that I purchased recently came with a servo motor, something new to me. So while searching LW and the internet recently for information on operating and controlling servo motors, I came across these outstanding videos on modifying the speed gradient on servo motors. They made a huge difference. It will be better if you watch the first video before the second, the second will make more sense. http://www.swflholsters.com/358/sewing-servo-motor-diy-smoother-speed-control-mod-paper-gradient/

Do you have the parts and service manuals? The service manual happens to be in Spanish, which should be easy for you. http://dixiesewingmachine.tzo.com/MANUALS/SINGERPARTS6/108%20w%2020.pdf http://dixiesewingmachine.tzo.com/MANUALS/SINGERSERVICE2/108W20,W21%20-INST%20SPAINSH.pdf According to sewshop.com the W series records were lost. You probably know W machines were made in Bridgeport, Connecticut USA.

What Machine Do These Presser Feet Fit?
Evo160K replied to Evo160K's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
"Personally,I reckon that there is very little machinery produced in the world today that will still be working in a hundred years." What does that say about our value system? Yes, the 45K53 is a cylinder bed machine. -
What Machine Do These Presser Feet Fit?
Evo160K replied to Evo160K's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
It's the older machines that attract me also, primarily Singers. Oddly, I don't sew at all, just like tinkering with the machines. How can one not admire the quality, strength and beauty, particularly when compared to modern, throw-away machines. That's not to take away from other sewing marquees, I have no experience them except for the Claes we used in our business, that I restored. Up to now, someone else has covered my seats, hopefully that will change, since I have the machines. Do you know anything about the Singer 45K53? I just bought one. -

Bikerdaz, Thanks for your interest and detailed feed back. Turned out the fiberglass thread that I was having trouble with couldn't withstand the stress and severe bending/angle going through 16 oz. +/_ of hard leather......thread just wasn't strong enough for that. What do you do with mc seats? I've made a couple from scratch for my Harley softail. -

Thanks Darren for the excellent fixes and tips. Would you happen to have an operators manual for a 45K53? I bought one recently and am puzzled by how the upper feed is adjusted. Regards, Al -

Not sure. I lost track of the seller. At the time, the people wanted $300 for them with freight, which I though was high, I passed on them. There appears to be two of each. -

Not a problem, Sandy. I just now sent them to the new email address.
-
Sandy, I emailed the manuals to you on the 2nd and again about an hour ago....four manuals in total, one was in German. Let me know if you don't receive them.
-
sandyt, I recently restored the same 8345-30 machine also known as a 200-3 machine. It uses the large bobbin and class 88 needle. The operators manual is too large to post here. If you'll PM an email address, I'll send it to you.
