Have you try to line the canteen with brewer's pitch? It is sell form Jas-Townsend? : Here's the link for the pitch: http://jas-townsend.com/product_info.php?c...products_id=373 You could also use natural bee's wax melted and swirl inside the canteen! Anway, i'm very exited and think i will try myself at making a leather canteen!

Once again, i have one more question I try to make some pattern for a cylinder holster last summer and i succed after swearing and scraping leather After struggling for a nice looking pattern, i was wondering if i can put my hands on books or video like the one that Hide Crafers are selling? I would like to learn to draft pattern, becaus, i would like ton sell my own ceeation and not using kits sold by Tandy or Hide Crafters. I have the video lesson: Basic assembly techniques by Georges Hurst and i did not take a look yet... But, i rest assure that i will watch this video next week-end. So, if you can reccomend me some book title and video i wuld gladly accept your reccomandations! Thank you very much!

I'd really like to make myself a leather canteen. The shape look like it was molded over a glass cooking plate! The sad thing here in Québec, is that we don't have any workshop about leather crafting! So, i must learn everyting all by myself. One of my friend who's making medieval metal armour since 1986 once told me: I learn to do it by scraping lots of metal and swearing I'll try do to a canteen lke the one you showed us, but, il would like to know how to shape the bottle cap? Once again, thank you for all the advices i can get from everyone of you!

Patrice replied to Johanna's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Truly amazing Johanna! I wish i have your talent someday! Until then, i'll have to practice a lot! Are you using craftaid templates or you design your own pattern? Anyway, i would wear those belts proudly! -
The only thing i say is, wow, thank you! But, forgive me if iasking 1000 of questions, but it is so intersting when i'm reading your reponses. So, i'll risk my self at another question How can i caluclate my price including, dye, finishes, stamps, thread, laces, sheep wool, leather and so on? I've been never good at this exercice and just make an estimated of my time, leather and a bit of dye and finishes. :

Wow Thank's a lot! But, a last question about flitz! Should i use marble polish or paste metal polish on my ceramic blade?
-
Thank's Bruce and Romey. But forgive my ignorance, but, what is flitz or simicrome? It's the fiorst time i heard those products I'll try to spread my rouge and eliminate the excess!

I'm using a ceramic blade. I bougth some jeweler rouge at my local tandy store, but i have a question about how to apply the jeweler. Tandy only have white rouge, and each time i apply a layer, it goes lumpy and bumpy. It seem like i cannot to apply rouge evenly. So, can someone tell me how to correctly apply rouge on cardboard paper? I would like to use a paint stick, so, i would me more easier to strop my ceramic blade and my other cutting tool.

I'm not part of my local SCA chapters, but i'm llokin to make leather replica from the middle ages. I'm trying to do medieavl purse and pouch as well as belts. When my leather skills wil be much higher I will try to make cusstom sword scabbard with complex rigs for suspending the sword on the belt.

For what i have read for now, it seem that people who are not in craft businnes (leather, clothing, stained glass, jewlery, etc..) dont know anything about crafstman. Craftsman who live from their art need too make a profit for living. They must pay taxes, bills, electricity, mortgage, food, clothes, shelter, workshops, tools, etc... Crafters deserved the rigth to live well and make a profit. With all the junk comming from China, consummers use to think that leather and the process of creation come cheap. Even if i have a day job (school teacher), i wish that one day i can work half-time in leather and education. I would also like to know if larpers in US are more willing to spend cash on leather gear than the larpers we have here in Québec?

Leather finishes
Patrice replied to abn's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I never tried neutral shoe polish, but i'm planning to use it in a near future. For my LARP gear (bracers, belts, armors pieces) I carve them, apply 2 coats of neat's foot oil, let them dry between each coat, then apply 2 coats of Leather balm with atom wax, let them dry, and finally, applied a coat of acrylic resolene. It give me a great resitant finish! I must say that larp gear is expose to rain most of the time including combat and action in water I always advice people that even if the leather is coated with wax and acrylic finish, if they jump in water, i cannot garantied that the leather will be waterproof I would like to know what should i use to waterproof my products? -
We don't have any law banning chemicals here in Québec, but for what you where talkin,g than the good and normal people must be asstrain of smoking, going to casino, not buying SUV, because some idiot can't control themself. I'm tired to se small groups of people controlling the rest of us who live and payings taxes for the rest of the people. Here, in Québec, about 50% of of the folks is working. The other 50% consist of students, people on welfare, odl people. So, i really understand why working and paying tax people are getting more and more upset in Canada and Usa! :censored:
