  1. :} :} Sorry - Sometimes I get to typing too fast, and I fat finger type. Heh Heh!!
  2. Hi, I purchased a book and have found it helpful, it is How to Establish prices for the Saddlemaker or Leatherworker. It is by Bob Brenner of Pikes Peak Saddlery in Colorado. This gives a lot of help in establishing an hourly rate. There are worksheets to help you figure in various expenses such as utilites, rent etc as well as the materials and time. It gives you a lot to think about while building your business. I think it runs around $40.00 plus shipping. I am sure there is more info out there. This site alone has lots of great info and resources. - Keep up the good work - Deb

  4. Another Idea is to visit your local Veterinary and see if there is any old X-Ray Film they will let you have. Rinse the film off and when it is dry you have a nice light weight piece you can use over and over again just like the plexiglass. Follow the same methods Randy mentioned above to attach your leather. (Randy gave me the plexiglass tip in a class I helped him with, and one of the members of our guild gave me the xray film idea.) Both methods work well. Happy Tooling - Deb
  5. Hello All - I just received my P.I.F. in the mail to day from Luke Hattley. It is a nice pigskin money folder. The folder is personalized with my initials. Luke made it from natural pigskin, and used Tandy's dark brown "all in one" and supersheen to finish. You can be sure I will be using it to tuck away some "Mad Money" to spend on Leather tools! Thanks again Luke!! - Deb
  6. Very Very nice!! What glue did you use to attach the backing on to the filligree?
  7. Hide Pounder, You are right about watching the edges. I automatically run my finger down the edge to check for any rough spots, but did not think to mention it in my post. It is a temporary fix until a glass slicker can be obtained. Thanks for catching that! - Deb
  8. I took a class at the IFOLG show a couple of years ago that Jesse Smith taught. He taught us to use a glass slicker before carving. It did make a difference. The stamping and carving was more crisp looking. I was looking at the glass slicker's in Barry King's booth, but ended up buying bevelers from him instead. I was in Hobby Lobby one day in the scrapbooking and stamping area and found a clear acrylic block that is 3 x 3 x 1/2 " thick. It made me think of the slicker. The top edges are rounded and it was fairly inexepnsive. I decided to try it and it works pretty well. (It is labled " the paper studio by stampabilities"). I think it comes in several different sizes. - Deb

  11. Nice Job! I like the idea of using a belt design for the spine too. Deb

  14. Very nice collection. Those slippers make me want to slide my feet right in for the winter!!
  15. I designed the inside myself. My daughter tooled a kit from Tandy for a small portfolio a number of years ago. I took the basic idea from that and built from there. I did have a little trouble with the light weight lining pulling away at the lacing when folding over, so I took out the lacing and put a re-enforcement strip around the stress areas that matched the outside and re-laced it. and put the latch on a leather strip to allow a little extra give.
  16. I had a request to make a portfolio. This is for a truck driver who's CB Handle is Tomahawk. His wife ordered it to give to him for Christmas. She wanted him to be able to use either a notebook, or clipboard, have a place for loose papers, calculator, and credit cards. This was a challenging project as it had a number of "first's" for me. One of them was making the card pockets inside the liner. Another was painting on leather, the third was trying the Rob Barr Feather technique. (also my first posting on leatherworkers.net) It was challenging and a lot of fun!
  17. WOW!!! Your stuff is beautiful! Love the belt.
  18. JW. I don't know if you found a supplier for the Duall 88 Contact Cement, but I just bought some at a place in Kansas City called KONOMA's Distributing 5629 E. Trueman Rd, Kansas City MO. 816-483-9388. They usually do mail order to retail stores such as shoe repair shops etc, but I was in KC and stopped in and got some. I don't remember off hand what I paid, but it seems like it was around $15 - $20.00 for a quart can. Hope this helps. Deb

  21. I am looking for a Leather Craft Home Study Course. I have seen one on E-Bay a long time ago, and have seen in older Hidecrafter Catalogs one by George Hurst. I would like to use it with my 4-H students. Thanks Deb
