  1. if you have any antique tools you may want to get rid of let me know.
  2. that belt is different from anything iv seen. that is a good thing. good looking work, i like the look of the finish with the saddle soap what sewing machine are you using?
  3. call slc, iv gotten 1mm from them. i do wallets also & it works good. they may have thinner
  4. call springfield leather. if they can not help you they will know who can
  5. doesn't look bad. i do see there is no eye on the right side? don't know if you meant for there to be one or not? if you did & forgot or it didn't turn out right you could do an eye patch on that side. i would also burnish the edges.
  6. you could do an antique style on it. you would stain you product then use an antique on it & the deep areas will be darker than the rest.
  7. do you have the box itself?
  8. Loyalty is a nice thing. Take the time to shop around. Don't hinge the whole leather world on tandy. Yes Al has passed, & there are no new books. What does that say about tandy? tandy is a good place to start if you have the assistance from store employees that know they are doing, which you expressed you do. The Memphis tandy employees are great people who understand leather also. As I mentioned don't limit yourself or your son to tandy. I deal with companies in Europe & the USA. I deal with exotic leathers that SLC gets for me that tandy can't touch. You will both get better in the craft so expand & try new things.
  9. The only part I will defend is that the employees don't know how to demo. The staff at the Memphis/Bartlett store do actually know how to craft leather. I will stick with you on getting my supplies from other sources. That would include SLC & Ohio travel bag.
  10. See my previous post of 16 December Springfield Leather Company has not disappointed me with anything. The one question I did have, Kevin, the owner took the call himself, answered my question & offered to exchange the item if that was what I wanted. I have even walked into the store & had Kevin, the owner greet me with a hello.
  11. Use a heavy gauge square. Hold it in place & measure with a steel ruler for your lengths. While holding your square in place use a blade skiver & run it along your square in light strokes adding heaver pressure each time. You will not have to cut clear through, just enough that you get a good line to follow with your scissors. This is what I do when trying to cut thin exotics. Sounds like a lot but works well.
  12. well welcome to the craft. now be ready to make mistakes. i still do. most recent was on an elephant hide roper wallet. i have made many of them. left everything on the desk for 3 days.

  23. Kev, i would say try locating someone in NJ before you jump into this craft. leather & the tools used can get real pricey quick. not just in tools but in stains, hardware, leather & anything else you may use. i did this many years ago then gave it a rest to serve my country, go thru a divorce & rebuild my life. i picked this up because i remembered that it calming calming for me to put on my headphones get into a zone & craft something that no one else has. if you do decide to jump in take a look at Springfield Leather Company. they are my only supplier for leather. also look at Ohio Travel Bag. while prices seem high with them your not just buying 10 snaps or d-rings. your buying bulk, & quality. many on this site will be glad to help you with all your questions. if you have any let me know
