  1. Welcome, best thing you can do is ask questions.
  2. Welcome, ask questions is the best advice I can give.
  3. If you go to Springfield Leather Company web site you will see many different choices. Way more than the factory. I like alcohol based dyes because you can dilute them to make more subtle colors. Get a look at the Al Stohlman books on coloring leather.
  4. That looks really nice. Clean work.
  5. Welcome to the craft. Look at Springfield Leather Company. I use to buy from the factory, but just don't like a corporation that carries what they want on their shelves. I will say the employees are a joy to talk to, & they will help someone out. If you have questions, ask away. Many people on here will help out gladly.
  6. Wild Bill is right, when your new in leather craft no question is stupid. Look at it like this, the mistakes many of us have made that we can inform anyone new about can save time, frustration & maybe a whole leather project. So ask away
  7. Matt, there are a number of sealers & water resisters you can use. I typically use anything with a mink oil on my holsters. You have to remember to allow the mink to do its job & soak in tho. I always rub the mink in by hand. Always remember to TEST whatever you are going to use on a scrap piece first. Mink will darken so leather taking away from the look you may want. SLC has a number of good items you can use. You can also goto any store that deals in farm supply & they should have sealers.
  8. Good to see another on here. West Tennessee
  9. Aidan, looks good. If you look at my wallets, it is hard to tell but I do all of the holes by hand. I did use the chisel once to do lacing holes. This is a long process, & it will make your fingers sore. After two or three heavy hide wallets you won't even notice.
  10. Hugo, Hello, it looks good so far. I try to keep my stitches 1/2 a centimeter from the edge when doing anything that will take a lot of stress & movement. My holsters, you can see in the pictures, are a good example. I like to keep the stitches per inch close also, 7-6. I do use 5 STI on the smaller holsters.
  11. check with springfield lester company, they come out with a new line of colors last year. not sure of the sizes tho
  12. have you ever looked at springfield leather? i'm wholesale with them & get my stuff cheeper & much better quality. by quality i mean hermann oak & horween. they will most of the time cut most leather they have to fit your needs. you have to remember the leather prices have went up this year due to cost of suppliers tanning cost.
  13. if you are going to et into a machine call Springfield Leather Company in Springfield ,Mo. 800-668-8518. They can help with all the sewing stuff. All of my sewing is done by hand.
  14. If you are still looking for someone to handle the rifle case let me know what he is looking for design type. Would need to talk to them to see what rifle, scope, dimensions, ect. I'm currently working on a case that will hang on the back seat/seats of a crew cab truck. Along with all the other holsters i'm doing.
  15. look at Springfield Leather Company. they are the only supplier i use. always have what i want & if not they try to get it. they recently got me another shipment of elephant hide.
  16. If you ever get to go to Springfield Leather do it. They give me a full tour. It is truly AW inspiring. I was speechless with all the leather they have.
  17. That doesn't supprise me. They went corporate & never looked back. That's why I go through Springfield Leather Company. Never had an issue with them.
  18. You will probably never be able to stamp them, they are mainly designed for plain saddle bags or chaps. You might be able to do some light carving. I hate to bash tandy, but they are a corporation & most of the leather they get is from Mexico. Mexico as you may know has a very different way of tanning. The leather is also over stretched, causing stretch marks. tandy just recently started handling Herman Oak, although in limited quantity. All of my leather is purchased from Springfield Leather Company. Iv never had an issue with them.
  19. complements the knife very well. like the choice of the white stitching
  20. if you haven't found anything yet go to Vintage Gun Leather on the net
  21. you do not have to be an advanced leather worker to make holsters, unless you are wanting to do a lot of tooling work. even then if you take your time you can accomplish what you are looking for. what style of holster would you like to make?
