How much do you charge for exotics?
Shorts replied to Shorts's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks for the formula Kevin. What about pieces where you know you'll only be taking a small bit from the a hide, say like a 5sqft' piece of shark? Is there some sense to advertising the temporary availability of shark trim in order to get the piece used? Or, do you just sit on it for the next inquiry? I'd don't want to be rash, but nor would I like to sit on perfectly good materials that could be generating income. Is that at the discretion of the maker?? Personal choice sort of thing? -
What are they doing removing the screws so often! Kidding of course. I also install my snaps the same way so I imagine it would get ugly if one were to fail.
-
You'll want flat head machine screws and low shelf sockets. The screw will set down far enough in the socket to let the snap close.
-
Set Tnuts between your leather pieces before stitching. Then attach the loops via stud or screw.

Oh I'm definitely not looking a gift horse in the mouth Just curious if anyone has done anything on their site to alleviate some of the repetitive questions with some good results. (I'm big on programs. If I'm seeing a trend, I like to adjust whatever it is I can adjust to accommodate or change that trend for efficiency) Makes sense about folks needing some reassurance on orders. I do the same thing. Everything I do is made to order so there's no way to remove the element of communicating with the customer without changing the system which I operate with. And I'm not at that point (yet, if ever). I'd need quite a few shop gnomes for that Thanks for the perspective Bob!

I'm seeing this pattern of emails: Can I get a price quote for...? I do have the Price link on the front page, right next to my email, which gets used very well. I'm just beginning to wonder why am I getting as many as I am and how can I fix that. I would like customers to send me emails on some really oddball items but I would like them to use their own calculator. Do I need to insert that widget into the site too? I'm juggling spending time working and spending time answering redundant emails. How do you do it?

airbrushing finish

I spray the inside pretty good. Just open up the needle tip and fire away. I spray in from the top and the bottom to catch the different angles. -
G36 so hard to find
Shorts replied to Shorts's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I've got a lead to borrow a G36 Blue gun. I'll use it to complete the current order meanwhile I'll back order one of my own. Gives me a bit of working room. I saw ASP had one but I'm still not sure about taking that chance lol I'll have to start keeping an FFL storefront - buy a gun, buy a holster, get a free transfer -

Interesting. I have a 19. I'll take a closer look in a bit and see if it might work. Thanks Dave -
Is there suddenly a rush on the G36 blue gun or what? I placed an order Sunday afternoon to get the dummies on the way, I finally get an email back that both are back ordered. I call another place, also back ordered. I call a third place that "don't normally check stock" but he'll check since I told him I am ordering now if they have it. Anyway, just had to vent here for a sec. Sheeeesh Can't wait for the long weekend!

First shoulder holster
Shorts replied to Shorts's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks I'm using a 1" wide strap that tapers wider over the shoulder. It just finally clicked how to keep the holster portion modular yet adjustable to the should straps and utilize the double D rings. The Drings would be attached to the holster....Duh lol It toook me a bit to figure that out. That makes the shoulder strap portion universal to the holster or mag pouch so that it can be interchanged with other models. And the nstraps can be made super easy to adjust. I just had to take a look at our camping gear and or motorcycle helmets to get the placement right. Thanks Jordan, you made the idea finally click on my head and I can finally step forward and get on with the hardware portion -
First shoulder holster

Yeah, I was hoping to not punch holes, especially on the suede. I think it'd be easier to adjust just by sliding. But I also still need the strap to be secure. I'd hate for it to move on me if friction gives way. Do you think I'm giving the friction not enough credit to do the job? -

Thanks Jordan. I think you're talking about just a slide or a concave slide type piece, right? -
Conway buckle as adjuster buckle on shoulder strap
Shorts replied to Troy1's topic in Hardware and Accessories
I'm thinking about using the conway for a shoulder rig using 4/5oz suede straps. Would the conway buckle work for the suede as it would for veg tan or should I look to a different type of buckle? If so, what kind? A slider of some sort? -
Jeff, sent you a PM

First shoulder holster

Yes, I'm taking forever on this rig as the customer said "REALLY, no rush", but now it's time for the rig to go to home. I want to get her buttoned up in the next week and delivered. I've decided to use suede (4/5oz) for the straps. I'm stumped on the hardware I should use for it. I need bottom Drings for the holster portion to attached to. I also need some type of slider so that the length of the straps may be adjusted for fit. What hardware do I need to use? I've decided to abandon holes and chicago screws. That doesn't seem like it'd be right for suede straps. Plus that method us tedious and annoying to adjust. I'm taking a complete "Easy button" on this I've got a Weaver catalog and an OTB catalog onhand too. -
I picked up a beat up motorcycle seat for an SV650 with the intention of rebuilding to use on my bike. I expect to tear off the old, already cut on foam and rebuild that with new material. Then I want to recover it all using leather. On my bike foot placement is critical so I'll need the seat to be short, slimmed and shaped to enable max foot down on the pavement. What materials should I look to use that will be comfortable to ride and easily workable in my garage? Next to cover I'd like to go with a simple leather cover. No tooling but I wouldn't be adverse to a mildly textured inlay or something relatively simple for a first timer on seats. What type and weight of leather should I look for? Seat will be black to match the colors of the bike. It is a sport standard/naked bike so I'd like the appropriate style. I'm also thinking to attach the cover I'll need to use rivets. What size and type work best for this application? This is my first time attempting a project like this so I'm open to hear suggestions and experiences with this. I'd like this seat to last and be comfortable. It's a weekend toy plus will pull touring/road trip duties in the future. If this seat goes well I plan on doing the other seat on the bike as well as doing the pillion seat to match (I don't have passengers, instead it carries my tail pack). Thanks yall, I'm eager to see how this turns out. I'd like to expand my leatherworking knowledge and skills. I have read through the topics on the motorcycles seats sub forum so I've got an idea. But it's always a confidence booster to hear some direct input for my project at hand. The Red Beast
