To Ms Johanna and Crew, many thanks for the awesome site. It is coming along and I hope more of us keep making suggestions to make it better without get impatience. Keep up the good work. As for the instructors: I want to personally thank Mr. Paul Burnett and Mr. Bobby Park for sharing some of their knowledge with us. Mr. Jim, I hope to learn much from your knowledge base. I am getting to "reading" about making saddles. I have a book & kit coming from Australia on how to make a small english type saddle, which I am going to try out. As for the Western Saddle, I am reading Mr. Beatie's book and still in Volume 1 of the Stohlman book. But to get back into what I was going to say. I just appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I know that many moons ago, this knowledge was not freely shared and that is unfortunately because as with everything it is part of our history. Now, we are hearing about some of the great master leathercraftsman and tool maker leaving us, which is very sad, but what is more sad is the extensive knowledge they take with them when so many of us would suck it up like a sponge. I mean, (as one thread offer to pay a master saddle maker to become their apprentice.) who would go to this extend to wanna learn? This is like telling our employers, we are going to pay you for giving us a job? I know that I cannot convince masters such as yourself to share their knowledge, but please do so on your own to tell your counterparts that here lies a basis where people wanna learn! I recently read an old story about Al Stohlman where he was telling someone that he had so many ideas to share about leather craft. His ideas included some 20-30 more books on how to manipulate leather. Man, that is a lot of knowledge that such a man wants to share. In his volume one, Al and Ann state several times their idea of making the saddle book a volume "set." I wonder exactly how many more volumes they had planned on making? Maybe some day this craft will become freely shared generational craft for all those who want to learn. Sorry, I got long winded. Kind regards.

My .02 cents worth. Stay away from Maxtor (now owned by seagate). I had a 500mb external HD and one day it just stopped working! I sent it to a recovery specialist whom I trust (longtime friend) and he said the power unit was not working. When I asked for the information/pictures/etc to be salvaged, I was quoted by Seagate $2000 with no promises. Forget it. At least, I had the pictures back up on CD when the kids were babies. The other stuff, oh well. My friend Tim recommended a Western Digital. I bought a network WD 1TB for the household is that used to storage everything but is not used live on any computer. Digital storage only. Keep backups of your back ups. Good luck.

WOW! All in all, we need to calm the feathers and move on. I still appreciate your offer to help ME later on. Thanks again.

Wow, you live in the area that TimK comes from. CC area.

Welcome to the forum. Where in Texas are you located? I didn't see your location in your profile on the left. I am a hobbyist when it comes to leather. I am reading and trying to learn how to build a saddle right now. Good luck

Wow, that interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I own both, and I provide each of them equal workout time. But I have to say that I really favor my Barry King Tapered Mauls more. I do have mauls that go up to 3lbs for heavy use. My hammers are pretty much the yellow plastic and the rawhide hammer. I do prefer my rawhide more than the yellow plastic. I hope this helps.

Oh no, not Ed the Bearman!! they look beautiful. What a nice set. Enjoy.

Go to the top of the page and conduct a search for leather braiding and/or pineapple knot. See what you come up with. You might be surprise. Good luck

I am getting their and I hope to get closer at the boot show. I am saving my pennies. I can see it now, I may have to move out to the patio upon my return when the better half get the CC statement. Oh well, after 25 years, she can throw me out as long as I have my tools, stone, bearman maul and leather, I am good. Hell, Stohlman started out of a chicken coup. I can at the very least find a construction port-o-pottie for the meantime.

I just started reading the "Saddles" book by Russel H. Beatie and the 3 Stohlman saddlemaking volumes. I started Volume #1 slowly, but I can see that I will have to read it again. I've got a few more coming in by next month. I will share my thoughts with you all on what I think about them. What kicked this venture into learning about saddles and making them was a recent estate find that I have been quietly working on. About a month ago, I found a small floral designed "signed" Ray Pohja saddle. It was very interesting, but the seller had no idea who Pohja was and mispronounced his name quite a few times. After securing the saddle in transit, I communicated with the seller as to who Ray Pohja was, his status and what he meant to our community. He was happy that the saddle went to someone that will appreciate it. Anyways, when I get some time off from work, time away from junior varsity football with my son and dance lessons with my daughter, I will take a photograph to show it off. Good night all!

I have faith in you brother. Plus that will be your second million dollar venture, watch! Let me know if that contact works out for you. Plus, I would like to see your pony design. I appreciate your efforts! Everything else is gravy.

TK I could be wrong, but I don't believe that Master Hidepounder glues his hide down until he is done casing it? I thought I remember him staying that. I use HO from Stevenson-Paxton and now Springfield and I've had no problems. Now, I am too lazy to get down to Homes depot to pick up some plastic, but I have been gluing poster board to the leather. I have always do it after I case over night, drown it quickly or whatever mojo out there I have picked up. I have even tested this one. I will case the leather, trace it and carve it. When I am ready to pound on it, I will glue it and let it sit for the glue to settle before I start wacking away. I am sorry you're having problem with the HO. I can take it off your hands if it keeps misbehaving!

So I finally have a title to describe what I suffer from, good, thanks TTCustom. I started doing some contractor work, but I am trying to keep it really low profile and not over burden me since I also have a full time job. A sewing machine would be nice, but my $$ is going into the I want to attend the boot show in October fund. I guess my next leg will be the I want to go to Wickenburg fund?
