Awesome work! Did you bevel the edges? It's hard to see in the picture but if I was wearing that kickass cuirass I wouldn't want square edges rubbing me as I moved about in it. This is an awesome piece and I am inspired to try my hand at one! Thanks for documenting the process!

It's quirky and cute -
So I've been typing in the search bar to try and find information that I'm looking for but haven't had much luck. I am working on a mask that I want to add steer horns on and I wanted to know how best to polish/finish them. What I ended up doing was actually rubbing the outside with beeswax, turning it over my zippo, and then buffing it with an old t-shirt. They came out decent, though not shiny. Is this a valid way to finish them? Is there a better way? I am looking to do some other artistic somethingorother with the left over horn and would like to find a way to bring out the natural beauty of the horns. Any advice? What have you done? Anyone have any pictures? Thanks!

How Do I Finish Leather But Keep The Leather Smell?

Thank you! -
Wow cutting the res with water worked A LOT better! Thank you for that pointer. Question though: since it is cut with water does that mean I need to do more coats to get the waterproofing/resistance I want? I'm using it on a project for someone who lives in the Philippines and I want it to ward off as much water as possible.

Thanks for the input! I will have to check both of those out.

I have been applying resolene by sponge and I'm just not happy with it because I always end up with a bunch of bubbles that I have to go back and dab away. I was thinking of going to the dollar store to pick up a spray bottle, put in some resolene, cut it with water, and use that to apply my resolene. I don't have money for an airbrush and the compressor I have sounds like a semitruck without a muffler. Would this work? Has anyone tried this before?

Thank you! I think I can do better on the next round.

I walked out of the room and glanced at this mask I made for last year's Dia De Los Muertos and I am still loving it! I think I posted it on my last profile but since I couldn't get into that one and the password reset wasn't working....I thought I'd just show it off again. More for me than for anyone else really. I am also thinking of revisiting it and doing a better job on the tooling. Since this picture was taken I have added some black see through fabric over the holes and it looks even better!

I actually like that idea Oltoot! I could easily find some pipe and grind it down. I don't know that I'd take it so far as to heat treat though. I might just try one and use a board and hammer/rubber mallet to pound it. Thanks!

Awesome! If you need, this is the link that I used to help guide me through the process. Then I just kinda did some guess work, weird measuring with splitting the toes. Mistakes helped me come up with some ideas to make it better for my next round: 1. Find a better way to get the sole to be flatter for the crepe rubber to stick to. 2. Use a larger hide instead of scraps to help with uniformity of uppers heights. 3. Cut my soles better lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1jiJ4qsdVk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zcpUz3Q6Fo

Hi Kiwi they are holding up amazingly well! The only thing that needs work is that some of the stitching has come apart but the saddle stitch is holding. I'll go back soon and restitch thoe parts. I've been wanting to make a second pair but haven't found the same deer skin remnants. I bought some thinner deer skin to make some indoor ones soon. Thanks for asking! I've used them once a week for a few hours of pretty rough use. They could use another round of dye. Oh wait I forgot that I used a whip stitch not a saddle stitch for the soles.

Awesome! Thank you all! I like the low tech but I'm not sure how well that will work with thicker leathers.... I will try it on some scrap and see how it comes out. The gasket cutter looks fun to play with!

Does anyone know of a cutting tool for cutting circles out of leather besides a die cutter? I would like one tool that can adjust to various sizes but can also cut 7/8 oz leather. I bought one circle cutter but it doesn't have a large enough blade to cut through the leather without flipping the piece over. I don't know if it exists and Ive thought of rigging up my own somehow....

Sounds good. I will add it to my project list and post it when I get done.

Awesome thank you!

There's a template section!?!?! Where do I locate that? I will try to find it right now but I wasn't able to the first time I did.

Hi Everybody! Is it possible to make your own watch band and tool or stamp it? If so what is the thinnest leather that can be tooled/stamped? Also does anyone know of a place to get free watch band templates? Thanks and stay awesome!
-
Thanks for the advice! This is only the third thing I've stamped/tooled.

Thanks for the help! Is there anyway i might screw up the tooling (aside from inexperience) when I burnish?

Please help a newbie out! What is the order of steps out these: burnish, tooling, oil staining. I am about to start working on a project and realized I wasn't sure what to do first. Basically the project is a leather "fanny-pack" thingy. It will have two pockets I was thinking of riveting on a backing piece then stitching it closed into a pocket. One of the pockets will have tooling on the cover flap. Should I tool then stain then burnish? Please help! Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I'd love to see the finished product!

Has anyone ever tried: 1. Water and canvas 2. Gum Trag 3. Bees' wax? If so what were your thoughts on that?
