I am working on making my daughter a leather cover for her NOOK COLOR for xmas. She is a BIG Hunger Gmaes fan, so I planning on doing the Mockingjay symbol on the cover... However since it will be flexed a whole whole lot by opening and closing along the spine, what kind of finishes do you guys recomend.... Thanks in advance... Ken

Various Types Of Sealer That Won't Rub Off On Flesh/clothes
weaselrunner replied to Casm's topic in How Do I Do That?
ok what is the ""mop-n-glo trick """"" dumb question time I know :>( -
I dont know if it might be a cheaper easier way for you , but what about a large air tank for tire inflation with a combo filter / dryer / regulator hooked in line. I use a conversion kit on an old 20 lb freon tank for that and as a portable air source. I f you dont have a compressor, hit the closest gas station and fill er up. By the way anybody ever play with an old NELSPOT 007 marker gun. Thats back when paintball was first starting out. Made for marking cattle and telephone poles........

wondering what would happed if I were to take some material (netting like), soak it in the solution and then lay it on a piece of leather. Would it turn the tounching area black or would it soak in and spread out too much to make a good pattern. Just thinking out loud with out maybe trashing a piece of leather.

look around for counter shops that handle granite or marble. there is one across from me at work and they usually have busted scraps in their yard in various thicknesses and sizes.

First Thing Worthy

ok I'll try again to post the picts. later -
This is the first thing that I have done that is remotely worthy of being posted on here. After reading about the barrel sock for a paintball gun awhile back, I decided to make one for my A-5. A lot of this was done during my lunch hour at work. The leather is 3/4 oz and dbl. thickness at the end, with Eco-Flo dye and Sharpie Markers coloring. i treated the leather with a Mink Oil water-proofing and conditioning cream from the shoe dept. and after rubbing it in, I used my wife's hair dryer to "liquidfy" it and get it to soak in the rest of the way. I know the hand stitching is off but some of that comes from interuptions at work.

something nobody has mentioned is what about an air tank with a quick change coupling and a filter dryer. just hit the gas station and tank it up. Years ago (B.K. - before kids), when I used to build models, I got a couple old freon tanks and put a couple air tank adaptors on them and used them as an air supply for air brushing. Why couldnt you do the same thing with an automotvie air tank for inflating tires. Throw em in your vehicle and hit a gas station (especially if any still have free air) and tank up. We also used to use em as a portable air source for tires, blowing out bug lights, etc. When using any air source you want a dryer at least to filter out any moisture from the line before it gets to the brush.

Has anybody ever tried using one for forming thinner leathers on or around an object??? Or maybe for molding leather to a form Just one of those weird ideas floating around in that almost empty space between my ears

try North Coast Knives - look under the kitchen blades, he carries 2 ulu styles (different handle types) only need a handle put on ( I used corian) already tempered and ready to cut (dont ask how I know ) They have a little more curve but are only about 5 to 6 inches from point to point around the curve of the blade.

Whats the best way line a leather belt with something like a velvetine fabric. My sister-in-law want me to make her a wide "dress belt" and rather than having leather as a backing, I was thinking about fabric. Any suggetions on what glues or other methods. Thanks

WOW !! Thanks for the idea !!!!!!! I play also and my old barrel condom is about worn out. I'll just have to upsize some, I use a FLATLINE barrel.

Your doing what had been an idea in the back of my mind, just wasnt sure if I was going in the right direction or not. We get a lot of "egg crate foam" in at work protecting delicate machine parts and electronics. I was thinking about getting some nice fabric and using the egg crate and swiping some time on my wife's sewing machine and basically making a padded pocket for the puter and building the case around it. I'm still new to this but gotta get my feet wet sometime. Looking forward to see how yours turns out.
