I make a pattern that has the main cut. I trace or draw it on and then fill in the secondary cuts freehand. This belt is overlaid and the edge of the alligator burnishes. It's burnished in. I skive the edge down real thin and then burnish it. HaHa...nothing gets by you, Bruce! My old belt shrunk so bad I couldn't wear it anymore. Now that I think of it, so did my clothes.....hmmmm!!!!

Wyoming Slick...... I've read your post three or four times now trying to understand your point. I can only assume that the tone of your comments relate back to some earlier discussion that I'm not aware of. If your point is that you are a Stohlman deciple than you are in very good company, but I think you could probably have stated that without throwing down the guantlet. If your point was that you had the opportunity to learn from more of the greatest leather artists than the rest of us, then why the animosity? Most folks just come here for support and encouragement and to share their enthusiasm and knowledge...not to start an arguement. But if you're looking for a debate on styles or workmanship, or whatever....then I'm your huckleberry!

They look real good Mark! Your workmanship is really neat and clean! The tiny meandering border is terrific!

Hide Inlay Belt
hidepounder replied to bruce johnson's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
That's a beautiful belt, Bruce! I have always liked hair-on inlays...they just always seem to look good! The custom basket is great. Did you have Barry mark it so that you always get the orientation correct? I would be gettting it mixed up and stamped upside down, LOL! Anyway it looks great! Bobby -
I one of those guys who likes to line everything. So when I'm making a belt I glue a 2/3 oz lining in to cover the flesh side of the leather. I just think it looks a lot more finished and professional. However, now you have to sew the edges, so adding a lining can mean a lot more work. Like ABN said, there is nothing wrong with leaving the flesh side exposed.....just try to keep it clean.
