That is one nice collar. How wide is that collar? I have a customer wanting one and he is saying he wants it 2.5" wide which seems a bit wide to me.

Thank you Jazzman

The tooled pieces on the top and bottom are 7-8 oz veg tan. The piece on the side is Nomad Oily Side from Tandy leather. First I coat everything with a few gernous coats of neetsfoot oil, some folks don't like neets foot oil because it can darken the dye but I like the richness it brings to the dye. Just my opinion. I let the oil soak in overnight. Then on the veg tan top and bottom panels I put on many coats of Kiwi neutral shoe polish. Apply, brush, buff, and repeat. I use a buffing attachement for my drill to buff with. I also use the same process to care for the seats after I have em on my bike, neets foot oil then shoe polish.

Here's the latest motorcycle seat I just finished. I posted more pics in the motorcycle gear section.

That looks great. I think we all cringe at our older work.

I use KIWI neutral shoe polish to protect all of my leather work. I've tried all the other stuff buy nothing holds up like good old shoe polish.

I think I would turn down doing the saddle bags. He'll probably wear you out with changes and not liking the color and so on again. You could always quote a high price on the saddle bags like $3500.00 since you did $1500.00 worth of work on the seat and only got $500.00. The seat looks great by the way. -
What should be used to refurbish and preserve old Civil War era leather goods in general. I want to assist a local Civil War historical site with the preservation and rehabilitation of the leather goods in the museum portion of the site and I'm just not sure what to use. I certainly do not want to destroy 150 plus year old historical artifacts.

I agree looks better now. Also I've never had any luck with the Tandy stains for anything that may be exposed to the elements. But my bikes do sit in the driveway with just a cover on em so they are rather exposed.

Another Long Wallet Completed

Very nice. So is there also a pocket for bills behind the card slots? -
I wrap paper around the seat then I trace around the seat on the side the foam is on. This will give you the complex curve shape of the seat. I then use a compass to transpose the line to the bottom this gives me my pattern for the side pieces. I usually do two side pieces and stitch them together. I will add extra length to the bottom of the pattern dependent on how I'm going to attach the leather to the seat pan.

It protects it from rain if the owner continues to apply the polish. I've found that no matter what finish I use the finish will come off over time while the the owner rides the bike. i have also used mink oil on both sides of the leather to help protect from rain then applied shoe polish on the outside finished piece.

Wow that is very nice.

paprhangr I use good ole Kiwi shoe polish to finish my leather work. I use neutral for anything with color other than black and use black on the black. After I apply the shoe polish I buff with a brush then polish it with a soft cloth, I use old flannel sheet rags.

Just finished another seat.

The strap on the green bag looked like nothing was done to it, maybe it was just the picture making it look that way. I sand the edges with a fine grit sand paper first. -
I'll through my opinion is as well. First I'm not trying to feed the family or make the house payment doing leatherwork. So I'm going to focus on low production high quality work with a somewhat high price. I've waited to seriously pursue selling my work until I reached a level of quality that I'm happy with. I view my work as one off original pieces that are 100% handmade. Just that in it's self would make it difficult for me do be a high volume producer. So I say figure out what you need and go at that way.

Hey mikomont your site looks pretty good. The design of your leatherwork is nice but the edges on many of your projects are not finished. Finished edges are a must IMO.
