spring flowers and good food
chuck123wapati replied to chuck123wapati's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
They think this mess started with diverticulitis, then the botched first surgery drained into her abdomen for 5 days, and left the second emergency surgery just cleaning up the mess and saving her life. This time, she was healthy again, and the doctors could fix all the problems caused by the first surgery; the appendix was partially obstructing their progress somehow and was also removed. -

thanks for the good thoughts. Man, you do live in the boonies, lol. I thought two hours was bad enough. -
Or get a hand embossing machine, they use them to make belts, straps, and also for stuff like this. buy a roller with your logo, buy your leather cut into straps, and go to town emboss a strap, then cut out each logo with minimal waste. If you want your logo with a particular shape, get a clicker die made to cut out the logos, a press will be needed for the dies. Two manual machines max, and a very small learning curve. Good luck to whoever takes this job, you could make hundreds of tags a day by hand and make easy money!!!

not squashing detailed carving in a stitching pony
chuck123wapati replied to LakeOtter's topic in Sewing Leather
Pretty much what you said!! put leather on the jaws and remember it is meant to hold as an extra hand would, not squish the life out of it. You're not intending to do anything but hold it in place while you work, so don't over-tighten it. Also, most times, you can find areas on your project that have no tooling to apply the clamp. Most important to remember is you're the brain part of the tool, just don't put it where it will ruin your work. -

Thank you!! and yes, it went very well, 6 hours, scar tissue was a big problem, it took two surgeons and they reversed the ostomy, found and repaired a fistula, two hernias, and removed the appendix. Hopefully, she can get her normal life back now, and I won't have to pack that open wound for the rest of her life. -

Glad to hear things are good over there!! My daughter is back in surgery as I write this.. She is getting her ostomy reversed. Hopefully, this will be the end of a nightmare for her. I'm doing well, but haven't gotten my inspiration back to get anything done lol. I have truck parts coming today, so that may help also have to change the oil in my car for the trip to see my daughter tomorrow. Hospitals here are not to bad its just 120 miles away lol. Spring has been wet and rather normal. Amazingly, after our last election, the contrails have disappeared in our skies, and the weather is returning to normal. Prayers for your pops!! Take care, my friend!!! Chuck -
Lol it is very tight to the body, but i doubt you would want to jog with it very far. Considerations for your project: In my opinion, decide first how you want your holster to work. Repeatability when the mind can't think straight is the key word in all emergency-related matters. Does the holster come off with the spray can, or does the holster stay attached to the person? You can't have it both ways, the holster has to stay where it's intended, either firmly attached to you or the can. After that decision, positioning is next obvioulsy, you want it where you can reach it and use it without thinking. set those parameters, then we can figure out a good design. I will add here the liability factor of making things that may have to save a life, so I won't design anything for you that may get me sued, but I will give advice and ideas for you to design your own bear spray holster. You need to treat this spray just as you would any defensive weapon intended for the same purpose. Always carried in the same spot and train to that, so thinking is not required to get it in hand or use. If the holster stays with the can, then it has to fit tightly with no slippage and have a quick release of some type. If the holster stays on your person, then a loose fit on the can and a good, tight fit and strong attachment to the body, so the can will come out without hesitation. The case can have multiple attaching points for positioning for different folks to use, but using and wearing it personally should be the same every time. I've considered this problem many times, as I do a lot of outdoor activities, fishing, hunting, and such. I was stuck on just how to hit a mad running bear over my shoulder while also running as fast as possible, jumping over deadfall, dodging tree branches, and screaming at the top of my lungs. The only sound solution I came up with was to never go alone and always with a person I could outrun.

Good luck!! A couple more questions if you don't mind. so, are you selling the machines or the stamps? or both? Does your course cover the legal and ethical problems of copying or using someone's intellectual property, trademarks, or logos? I see this a lot with the new lasers, printers, and such. Seems folks think because you buy a machine that makes copies and can google, then it's ok to copy or use anyone's work and sell it without permissions.

but don't wet your leather too much, or the tooling may lose some of its definition. I, too, dye when the leather is moist. I think they may put structions on the bottles, but I've never looked lol.

What kind of files are used to mod or make stamps?
chuck123wapati replied to LakeOtter's topic in Stamping
Here's some more info on stanp making -
you need to use a reducer to make it (Createx "transparent" paint ) transparent. White pigments don't have that ability. The only way to achieve transparency is to dilute the pigments, which means lower-quality paint. This is just acrylic paint with finer pigments and less viscosity, meant to be used in an airbrush. I use airbrush acrylics as well as regular artist's acrylics on leather with no problems. The only downside to painting on leather is the cracking issue in the case of this eagle pattern, that would be a non-issue as there is little flex in that area of the jacket. apply in light layers until you get the look you want.

What kind of files are used to mod or make stamps?
chuck123wapati replied to LakeOtter's topic in Stamping
checkering files would be a last resort, imo, they are short and hard to manage on iron. jewelers files, also called needle files. They work great and can be found in most hardware stores or Walmart, etc. I purchase stainless bolts to make stamps with iron will darken or stain the leather sometimes, that's why most stamps are chromed. I use them on my knives as well as making stamps and various tools. -
looking for a specific "basket weave" stamp
chuck123wapati replied to Shimo's topic in Leather Tools
A good deal of the old timers made their own stamps. This one could have been made with a file very easily. -
Matching border stamps and basket or geometric stamps.
chuck123wapati replied to bruce johnson's topic in Stamping
Very good information; it always amazes me at the ability of the human eye and brain to pick out subtle issues that make a design appealing, even though we don't notice or understand why. I use the rule of thirds a lot when designing stuff also. -
Acrylic paint is the only way to achieve an opaque white color on leather with satisfactory results.

Zipper tabs on a pouch, why might one make a "split" zipper tab?
chuck123wapati replied to AEBL's topic in Sewing Leather
This way, the zipper doesn't get ruined from being pulled apart when the bag is open. no stress on the zipper at all. -

On all three, no two snakes are alike; they naturally don't have the same color or pattern. -
