Axe cover 2nd attempt
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You're probably correct. I have enough leather to trim it. -
Really didn't like the way the 1st one turned out at all. It just bothered me! Here's my 2nd attempt. Turned out soo much better for me. It's 8 1/2-10 ounce Wickett and Craig vegetable tanned dyed with Fiebings pro dye Mohogany. Thoughts?

Axe sheath/ cover help
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Not sure what you mean? There's 2 layers of welt on the bottom. Figured that would fit really well. The rivet is too tight and smashed the extra welt. -

Axe sheath/ cover help
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Here's what I came up with. Not perfect but this is my 1st. It'll need tweaked a little. Rivets I smashed too much, which in turn made it really tight and pushes the top up. Thoughts for 1st attempt? -
Axe sheath/ cover help
DaveP replied to DaveP's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Here's what I came up with handle is held in with a wedge. The rust color on the axe head is original coating from the factory. It's how almost all the Norlunds came. Not hardly any corrosion at all. I just want to protect the edge once sharpened. This is the Canadiene model...1973-1986. They stopped production in 1986, closed permanently. Thanks for the ideas for a cover. -

Found my old Norlund axe recently and need to make a sheath or cover for it. What have you made for an axe? Thanks for sharing...David

If you're referring to the non dyed spots...that's where I did not apply any. They'll be glue spots for belt loops. I'm trying to figure out the small things looks like bite marks or disease.
-
Are these some kind of bug bite marks?
-
Just put another coat of dye. This is after only a couple minutes after applying.
-
What causes these odd spots or discoloration? I put 2 coats of Black pro dye on veg tan. These spots or whatever it wasn't visible when natural and while wet. This is after overnight drying.
-
Thanks for the replies. Next time I think I'll dye the entire piece. Maybe some 50/50 resolene. We'll see. Thanks again

This is my first wallet ever made (December 2021). I've been carrying it ever since...about a month and a half. The interior ...all I put on the inside of cover was Neets foot oil. The brass zipper and slide are leaving marks on the inside of cover. What would you use to stop it? This is veg tanned leather. Also, marks on zippered pocket from opening by left snap. If I made another I'd probably use chrome tanned already died. Is there a advantage or disadvantage to that? Thanks again

When using a vacuum bag to form a holster how many HP do you use?

Thank you for the explanation Chris! -

I haven't tried any of this yet! You bring up a question for me. Assumption that when forming in a bag the leather has to be wet. If after dye dries and wet the leather enough for wet forming won't it do the same thing? I don't know hence the question. Thanks again -
Very nice gesture and a really nice job on the dice cup!!

I tried something different on belt loop on knife sheath. It looks okay but not good. I use pricking irons for my saddle stitching. How do you stitch a triangle? Thanks again

Looks good!! What kind of lathe do you use?
